I'm making a simple shmup. Its my first real attempt at making anything.

I would like to find out how can I link other libraries to my project. Every guide I see is very vague about this, like I have missed some paragraph about this very trivial thing when I was learning the language.

I have a lib folder, an include folder, and I know I have to add some text to the 'Other linker options' field in Code::Blocks, add the #include lines to the main.cpp, and later put the dll file next to the executable.

Yet the stuff I'm looking at only contains a bunch of .h and .c files. Is there any basic approach to this? Lazyfoo at his SDL tutorial was such a bro for explaining every single step regarding this question, but I have never found any other guide like his in case of other libraries.

It's a case by case scenario. If your game has many unique characters that need lots of animation but not much in the way of gameplay, then the artist can end up doing more work. Like if you have heaps of dumb enemies that all use the same ai.
But yes in most cases the artist most likely does less than 50% especially for smaller scopes.

You won't have much luck here friend. Amateur games barely have writing and even dialogue sometimes. As an indie, being able to dish out a game with decent graphics and good gameplay is already too high of a target, so nobody will take "voice acting" in considering when making their game.

No, we absolutely dont have enough information to make that call

The value of 1 "damage" could mean a lot of things. Do enemies have "hitpoints"? Do they have 1 hit point? Do they have 1000? Is there another way that damage is calculated?

Does speed * damage = expected DPS? Does each point of "speed" confer a 1% increase? a 0.1%% increase? A 10% increase?

How is armor calculated? Is it a percentage based reduction? Is it an absolute reduction? Is it a combination of the two? Does armor cause a miss chance instead?

Basic randomized shmup. It's my first game in close to a year and the first I could really call my own so I thought I'd work with something simple to jump off of for later projects.

The 'plot' is you play a drone sent into a field to collect observation data, over time going deeper into the field but you can strafe close to objects without busting your hitbox to collect data faster.

In actual progress, I added some energy mechanics. Standing still recharges energy, moving drains it a little, shooting drains it, and moving and shooting drains it the most. At low energy you can move, but can't shoot. Mech continues to recharge when you leave it.

There might be a better way, but how I've always done it in GM:S is to, in your Step Event, basically you have your horizontal collision check, which checks your x + your movement speed, and if it returns a collision, I do a short do() loop which iterates y values upwards by 1 pixel at a time until either the y is above a certain amount (slope is too steep/its a wall) or until it finds a collision-free spot.

It then uses the movement speed and the y result to calculate the slope (rise-over-run, hi middle school) and then however you want to handle slowdown would happen using that data.

for a check in a single point, calculate which tile you're on through a simple division with floor
then check which kind of tile is that tile
if it's empty, no collision
if it's full, collision
if it's partially full, there are several ways to tackle this. if you have no subpixel precision, the easiest way would be to make a table of constants that have the coordinate at which the solid part starts for each row/column, and then compare the position within the tile accordingly to get the result
depending on tile rotation, the table could indicate the row or column and shit, you know the drill

Very good for the first attempt. But you have one serious problem: Transitions. They are way too rough. It feels like there's 3 different compositions in one composition. Take a look at 0:49 and 2:09 for instance. Another critical problem is the lack of the bass layer. Having at least one bass layer feels saturated in these type of compositions. For me if you boiled down SS13 to its base element it is a few things. You have to have the concept of the informed minority (antagonists) versus the uninformed majority (crew) and you have to give them all something to do besides figure out who the killer is or who to kill, otherwise the game is just mafia. If you simplified the elements of the jobs in SS13 you would negate the issue of it being predictable because you would be able to make each job relevant by simplifying it. If you've ever played SS13 you know how much crap is in it that gets used very rarely, how big and obtuse the ship is and how rounds drag out forever. So by simplify I just mean cut down to the base elements without sacrificing depth.

Static vs dynamic linking is just if you want to have .dll files be required to be shipped with your program or if you want to have it built into the exe file.
There's pros and cons but it weights in static linkings favor for any simple project really.

The basic process of linking is:
*Declaring additional include folders
* This will let your program know what file you're referring to when you say #include "sfml.h" or whatever which is important for the compiler to recognize the functions and types of the library (so you can use it)
* Adding additional library folders
* The .lib files are needed for linking properly
* Adding DLL's
* These just have to exist in a place where the program can find them at runtime. So you should just drop them in the folder where the game executes. Where your EXE file is when you've built the program (the program will build fine without them but without the DLL's it will crash becuase it's missing some DLL's)

Ah man this reminds me of high school. My friends and I made up a club and got the principal to sign off on it, so every single homeroom period we got to go to the lab for "Tech Club" where we literally just made 4-player Game Maker games and dicked around.

I'm currently in the middle of transitioning from inheritance-based coding to component-based.

The easiest way to explain it is to subdivide your desired functionality as much as possible, and then put each functionality into its own script. So you've got, for example, a player character and an enemy. Instead of coding a general mob class and putting the movement stuff in there, then having the player class and enemy class inherit from the mob class, instead make player script for all the player-specific functionality, an enemy script for all the enemy-specific functionality, and then general scripts for all the functionality that they are to share. For example, take the movement code you would've written into the mob class, and put it into a movement script that you can then give to both the player object and the enemy object.

Think of the scripts as modules, each one adds a small amount of simple functionality, and the goal is to develop a decent amount of more complex functionality by mixing and matching scripts.

That is, from the point of view of someone who has just literally started ECS coding today.

The backdash that SotN and similar titles uses works pretty well in my opinion. I generally don't encounter situations in those games where I need to dodge forward away from something, as much as backwards from something I'm currently engaged in combat with.

I played Clarent during DemoDay and I can say that I would much prefer to just turn around and backdash away from somethign that was behind me, rather than having a forward/backward dash key.

Just my two cents. Awesome game though.

Hey Arikado I have a few gripes with Clarent's current state.
Dash attack can be spammed for easy but slow wins.
Up slash can be spammed for easy win.
Crouch slash is COMPLETELY broken because you can litterally just hold down and attack and the knights can't do shit because crouch slash outranges them and also stuns.

Imo I reckon up slash and crouch slash need more startup time because those two moves can be repeated to infinite the knights. It would also be a good nerf to the hook because then the hook can't just be used to insta combo kill the knights.

Also I kinda agree with >>148447049 on the dash. I'm not a fan of the forward dash as I think it oversimplifies allot of the encounters because it's just too good of an approach option. I think an older version of Clarent was exclusively back dashes and I liked it allot.

It's got both. Guitars are alright, Acoustic/Nylon is pretty good, electric is good if you use a jazz tone, but the distorted rock one is meh. The bass sound is really good too. Personally I really like the saxaphones and world instruments. The world percussion is very realistic and expressive

Premade weapons tend to feel better, because they're more deliberate.

Customizable lets the player tweak it to whatever is more comfortable.

I personally prefer premades because of that deliberate design. It's easier to build your game around that too since you'll know what the player should have.

It would depend on the game, but I think most people prefer premade for multiple reasons, but I think the simplest reason is, say it's a FPS, people play it to shoot stuff, and the time you have to learn how the customization work and then customize it isn't what makes the game fun, it's shooting the gun that's fun.

I did some streaming while I was working on Dungeon Break. I found it to be extremely useful for me, since I had people watching I couldn't just sit there and be a lazy shit. Kept me accountable, plus sometimes I'd have people in the chat helping me out with on-the-fly feedback.

So, I haven't played the game, but if you want some honest feedback by just looking at the trailers I'll give you some.

The art-style is all over the place, you mix pixel art with real-life photographs and then there are some tiles that seem to have been made with the smooth brush in Photoshop and some that are done by hand. Sticking to one thing is optimal. You also scale your pixel art, which makes it look even more inconsistent and unprofessional. Especially if you're trying to make an homage to older games.

Judging from the reviews of the game, it seems that you have quite a few bugs. You need to playtest the game, and you need to have others playtest the game and give you feedback.

The musics seems to be okay, judging from the trailers and reviews. Sound effects I have no clue.

The only tips that I have for you, is that first of all, playtest the game. Second of all, stay consistent, it's very important. And also, listen to the feedback that you receive. You have to listen, not everyone is out to hurt you.

The scripts aren't connect in any way and the one I deleted was not referenced by literally anything.

It's simply the engine being retarded and I reproduced the same problem 100 times using backups.
