I think I need to drop out of Space Jam. This game I'm working on is looking way too ambitious, and if I start to seriously put time and effort into it, I think I'll wind up neglecting Dungeon Break, which I don't want to do.

Alternatively, I could polish up my old game BURGER which was about racing giant Russian mutant-pacmen-things to collect the most burgers in order to stack them up and reach the moon first in the Space Race.

It's an old game though, so that might be cheating as far as the Space Jam is concerned.

Either way I'm going to pool my efforts into Dungeon Break, and come back to this game when I have the time to properly develop it.

I'm making an SRPG. I can't wrap my head around how to keep track of where a cursor or unit is on the grid.

Right now I'm saving the position of each tile, putting them in an array, and then looking them up based on the cursor's position. That seems reasonable, but the way I actually go about it seems really messy. Lots of finding gameobjects to access their attached scripts to access some variable. There's gotta be a better way to do this.
>>
>>148267326
reduce the scope.
skip tutorials and only put a few rooms + a boss.

Have a 2d array list of all tiles.

You give each tile a position x and y on the grid, so if your grid is 50x50 tiles, and your resolution is for example 500x500, you know that if your mouse is at position 400x400, you're looking at the tile at position 40x40.

You don't need the tile to tell you it's position.

Very dumb OOP question:

I have a "Shape" class, and "Square" and "Circle" inherit from shape. I want to create a method in a different class that can have either "Square" or "Circle" as a parameter.

public void StupidMethod(Shape myShape)
{
// does things things here with myShape
}

when I try to do something like:

Square mySquare = new Square;
StupidMethod(mySquare);

I get an error saying the parameter Square isn't assignable to Shape.

I understand why it's complaining, but I can't wrap my head around how I should be going about this.

Honestly, half the reason I give up on game dev is that there is an extreme lack of art. If your game looks like shit it's going to feel shitty.

You can get away with it if it's like dwarf fortress art where art isn't the emphasis, but most games need good art to feel right.

>>148279749
I thought I was going to do that, but I found that the simulated stuff wasn't visible to the player, so it didn't feel like a living world, so make sure the player can 'see' all the gears turning

also give the player some way to interact with the systems on more than a superficial level, meaning let them mess with the data that the systems work with

The manual is pretty good to understand how everything works, and that book "Game Maker for dummies" is pretty good if you want to learn about the Dungeons & Dragons.
But I highly recommend you to watch some tutorials that use code, is not necessary that you remember everything from them but you'll get a better result.

The hand can push boxes now. When it pushes two in a row, it kills the closer one.

I should make it damage units this way too, for consistency. I like the way it plays now though, so I'll make a new unit with the hand's current function minus the block pushing.

I also implemented gradual introduction of unit types, but that is not webm-memeable. The AI always gets a unit type first. When you manage to kill one, you can start spawning them yourself. The first level, "all hands" is actually fun.

Is making a method like Move and Jump and just putting Move() and Rotate()in the update loop a bad thing?

Im looking at a unity script that uses things like enums and the movement and rotation of the camera with the aim. As well as the character rotating to the direction the player moves with the camera is never listed. The game has the EXACT movement and shooting I want (without the bloat/paywall unity tutorials have) but I cant make heads or tails of its Third Person controller script thats on the player.

Question. How are your tiles/grid set up? Like, how do you determine the cursor's position, and then a unit's movement range?

In Unity:
I set up a parallel 2d grid system that uses ints instead of Unity's float xyz positions.
Each tile is its own object. I raycast and find the unity position of the tile, and pass that into a function that converts from gamespace to my 2d space. That;s how I find the cursor.

Unit movement range changes the color of the tile objects, based on functions that find all tiles within a certain distance.

I can pastebin the relevant code if you like.

Sprites are easier to keep track of and animate, promote concise use of colors, usually keep your objects to a more consistent size, and almost always have a different style from your usual drawings.
I draw and then scale down my drawings and refine the shitty scaled down mess into sprites because it ends up better in the end, bot because my drawings are bad on their own. Nothing "arbitrary" about it.

Alrighty, got the inventory system working, as well as got basic system put together for the way weapon chips work.

Basically, the game has a set point of item rarity and item quality. It'll spawn a chip of one of the four types:

Function - Determines shot type, damage, and heat produced
Ignition - Determine projectile speed, firing speed, and firing mode
Cooling - Determines temp max, cooling delay, cooling rate, and overheat penalty
Special - Determines secondary attacks. Stun, Explosive Shot, etc.

The chips belong to a certain "brand", currently Rojier Arms, GCP Standard, or Smuggler, all of which have advantages. For example, Rojier Arms chips are balanced in all stats, and Smuggler chips have high damage but generally terrible heat build-up and cooling rates.

The amount of projectiles you fire, how much damage they do, what kind of projectile they are, etc. is all determined by the chips you put in your weapon.

How could I make my character slowly turn when touching right/left on the virtualjoystick?

I tried a combination of things with your code and the one I had, this http://hastebin.com/bupeloneqi.avrasm rotates my character into the direction that I walk to whenever I hit the up/down/right/left keys but it doesn't work with the virtualjoystick (it's meant to become an android/ios game).

Replace the Input.GetAxis("Horizontal") and Input.GetAxis("Vertical") instances in that code with your_joystick.position.x and your_joystick.position.y, respectively.

I've never used virtual joysticks, but I assume that its position is 0 when it's not being touched, and positive/negative otherwise.

If it has a non-zero position, then just have the code check for its default position and whether the current position is greater/less than it.

When making outlines, try to avoid having any pixel directly adjacent to two others. For example one of the upper-right pixels in the first frame, and one of the lower-left pixels in the second frame.

Having many pixels adjacent to each other in an outline causes it to look blocky, which is why >>148296639 looks so much worse. Its outline is comprised almost entirely of such pixels.

Is there a way to make a loop declare a bunch of variables? Like, say I wanna declare 10 int variables, how would I phrase this?

I can't go

for ( i = 0; i <= 10, i++)
{
int i = i+1;
}

because then it's gonna see it declaring an int called i, and setting it to i+1 ten times...

>>148304061
Basically, inheritance is the wrong tool for making different kinds of entities, because:
- As soon as you introduce a new kind of entity, or worse, a new property that entities can have, you gotta reshuffle your inheritance hierarchy and all your code breaks
- If you ever need to combine different categories of entity behaviors in a single kind of entity, you start needing multiple inheritance, and all your code breaks
- You end up duplicating a lot of logic across different kinds of entities, and then when you need to change how something works, you end up with bugs where you forgot to change it in some places

Instead, you should make an Entity class where the whole purpose is to track what components (entity properties, traits, etc.) are "owned" by that entity. You can do this either by making it an actual container, or by just using it as an ID tag and storing the components in a giant World class that holds all the data for your game. Then you can write update code that asks what components an entity has, and operates on those directly, without ever needing to know what "kind" of entity it is.

It's the green crosshairs in front of the jet that cause damage as long as the target is in them. The projectiles are just visual flare I added today

I found a while ago that if it uses the projectiles to cause damage, it becomes really unwieldy at distance but can kill you in a second up close. There's no good way to have it deal a consistent amount of damage, and the AI is much better with it than the player. So I think using the area-of-effect plays better but it's harder to convey to the player

So I did some googling and thought about it for a bit and I have an idea now of how to go about it.

Could having a component class and deriving all my components with their update loop and data work?
Then I'd have a Player class, etc that would have an array or list of all the components. Then in the Player/etc entity class, it's update loop would loop through all the components and update it?

I don't know I'm just thinking about how I should go about it

Maybe I'll ask this question too late, but I still hope I can get some answers.

I'm trying to do what you've just said, but I have no idea how to achieve it. Jelly-dev said earlier that all he does is draw the stuff in PS, then Unity does the rest of the work (basically). I'm using SDL at the moment, and I'm struggling to how to get my stuff into it without any loss of quality.

of course its easy to dodge, it's only one weapon.

in the final fight there'll be 2-3 different projectile attacks coming at you with different behaviour.

No, he was saying that it didn't make sense that you exploded toward the end, because nothing hit your plane's sprite.
Ergo, your hitbox is too large.

>>148310760

For a collab to work we need art.
Artists do not give art from free.
Draw your conclusions.
