If invasions are also based on weapon upgrades, and the system automatically uses the highest leveled one you have in your game, what happens if i drop a +10 weapon for someone at the beginning and they pick it up? Boss review and discussion time. I'm going to be going through all of them and sharing my thoughts, whether you fucks like it or not. No faggy rating system, just listing what I like and dislike. Feel free to reply with anything you think I overlooked or debate points.

> Iudex Gundyr
As the very first boss in the game Iudex needed to make a good first impression. His design is intimidating and ornate, his arena simple and beautiful. Even keeps mood candles lit.

- First knock is the GS you activate the fight with. There's this gory, weighty animation of the player yanking it out - then the sword suddenly vanishes awkwardly into thin air. This was a wasted opportunity to let the player simply wield the weapon. The "Ashen Firelink GS", a shitty version of FL GS without the stat requirements and flame spouting weapon art. From shows us later that they clearly don't give a shit about handing out useless GS's for boss fights, and trivializing the very first boss in the game isn't nearly as bad.

Doing this gives poorer starting classes a leg up and teaches players about the second stage fire weakness far better than unceremoniously dumping a bunch of firebombs in a corner.
However the main reason I like this idea is the Soul of Cinder FL GS. It would feel extremely satisfying to receive the powered up version of a cool early weapon you weren't allowed to keep, giving players a keen sense of progression from the very first boss to the very last.

-Second issue is the aesthetics of the second stage. Here begins the long running theme of the enemies who say REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Constant screaming has always been more aggravating than scary, and the design itself looks like a top heavy sock puppet.

Overall good first boss that teaches new players about circle strafing, second stage, parries and damage type weakness.

>Vordt of the Boreal Valley
Inoffensive and forgettable.
Vordt teaches the player that avoiding attacks is usually better than tanking them, especially with the new frostbite mechanic. A lot of taint slapping, as well as smacking the shit out of bosses when they do a breathe attack.

Arctic man-bear-pig serves as a great lore dump for Irithyl and the Pontiff's mischief, setting up a huge part of the story and giving something for the player to look forward too. Arena is about as boring as the boss, the most exciting thing is wondering what's behind the massive door.

Almost disappointingly easy, but it's still early game. Maybe should've learned how to do a few belly flops.

It strikes me as odd that they chose 30-32 as the strength breakpoint for equipping greatshields, yet there's no weapon in the game which is better 1H and benefits from 30+ strength without being a full-on 40/40 quality weapon.

So despite being strength-gated shields, they only really over any synergy with quality builds and not strength builds.

GS tank is super viable and incredibly effective in some boss fights but I wouldn't recommend it early game especially when the best easily obtained shield is a medium

>Curse-Rotted Greatwood
One of the most disliked bosses in the game and the herald of "attack weak points for massive damage!", a mechanic which we'll unfortunately be seeing far too much of. The decision to lock soul transfusion behind a fight as lame is this is baffling yet not as bizarre as some other choices they made with him.

- Defeating this boss forces the player to join the Mound Makers covenant much later in the game. Defeating the boss and tonguing Rosaria before completing Sirris quest line cancels out the covenant until you NG+. What this has to do with the fight is that there's absolutely no warning, the player survives a huge fall (without taking damage) while poor Hodrick is pancaked. A victim of the pointless and arbitrary decision to ensure that a blind playthrough will never get to experience the joy of being an absolute mad man.

- Infinitely respawning mobs. More challenging than the boss itself. Any fight that can be difficult with respawning mobs could be just as difficult while less annoying by making the actual boss harder. Fucking peasants.

- Greatwood uses his flailing arm penis to give a fat middle finger to Sorcerer characters, as if the game needed more of that. You can't lock onto the pustules, so if you planned on using soul arrows for anything good luck. Swapping to something else and R1 spamming is probably a feeling early game spell casters will be getting used to.

The design of the tree itself is just gross. Can't help but feel that popping a nest of crotch zits could be replaced with literally anything else and be better. The arm it sprouts is neat, I'd say that incorporating more vulnerable fleshy human body parts into the tree would help make it scarier while simultaneously less disgusting. The first stage of the arena is very pretty and the worshiping hollows that you can remove before the fight is a nice touch. Too bad the boss ruins the arena with his STD riddled ass, just like he ruins his fight.

Not really
Pretty much every class implies some level of weapons knowledge and training aside from Sorcerer, Cleric and Deprived, and that's independent of the fact that the player character knows how to do shit like the breakdancing moves as soon as they get their hands on the Farron Greatsword, or know how to draw out the fire of the Gargoyle Spear/Hammer as soon as they get their hands on one

I dont really have the means to test it. I have the pontiff rings but not the stats to wield the shield and its fire infused. I tried it out on some of the demons in the ruins and the numbers were increasing per hit. I don't know if the WA already does that automatically though.

So I gotta beat Dancer at low SL < 20 for my kawaii Gundyr cosplay build. And I can't upgrade my shit. Logan like a true celebrity got more famous after leaking his nudes. Not sure where the bird mask comes in, but plague doctors are pretty cool. Oh, almost every other weapon clips through it? Nevermind.

A magical bullet hell boss, with a dull but well designed arena that offers well placed respite from the constant barrage of magic missile.
Another fight that gets picked on for being too easy, though the gimmick is about as well done as it gets. Which still isn't saying much.

A missed opportunity here is the chance for some dialogue. If we discount Oceiros and his insane rambling, Prince Lothric is really the only boss that directly verbally addresses the player and what the player is. We know the Sage's are human, and discover later that one actually managed to get laid. Some lore about the Undead Legion or the Cathedral would've fit in really well, or at least be better than "OOOOAUGUAUGH!" every 5 seconds.

The only weapon classes the player character and most npcs seem to know how to use properly are thrusting swords, katanas and some curved swords, even then they manage to either overswing or telegraph their attacks too much.

From what I understand of swordsmanship it's not only unintended to ever use these weapons with two hands, it's actively detrimental because you don't get a ton more killing power out of two arms and you do get less effective reach.

It'd be better for two handed swords to be pointed outward while the player is locked on, and resting on the shoulder when unlocked. Mainly just Great farron dart and flashsword being good.

Great Farron Dart is probably the single best spell in the game. Any spellcaster instantly becomes more viable if they can shoot out 100+ damage darts. They have a pool of good spells but it really just comes down to having blue throwing knives that deal 150 damage a pop are incredibly powerful.

Some of the greathammers you could just hold like a regular warhammer with one hand up near the head and another at the base of the haft, but I don't think there'd be any technique to using a great club other than swinging it like a baseball bat with reckless abandon.

No. It wouldn't be 20 pounds, but it would be too heavy.

Astora greatsword would be horrifically balanced in real life. It's too rigid, too heavy, still too thick. Swinging it like a DaS1 zweihander would be about the only way to use it, with the weight dragging off the ground.

The Zweihander is close but it is upscaled and bigger than the real thing.

>>148206104

Zweihanders were real weapons, but they were more greatsword sized rather than UGS. The doppelsoldners of the Landsknecht used them; I don't think it's concretely known how they were used, but the common theory is they would use them to hack the tips off of enemy pikes to allow their own pikemen to close in. I've also read somewhere that they might've had use as defense tools for bodyguards because in unarmored fighting you could control a lot of space with one, potentially against multiple opponents. In armored combat you'd mostly half-sword and I don't think there was really too much advantage to having one there.

There were also things like this called bearing swords, but they were entirely ceremonial. Claymore-size is about as big as real swords ever got.

And about as big as they ever needed to get. For instance, real lucernes or bec-de-corbins (or in English, crow's beaks) had smaller heads than they do in Souls games, because that's all you needed to kill with, and a heavier head meant you had to put more effort into swinging it, which made you tire quicker and potentially die sooner. So something like Smough's is just complete overkill; not only is it impossibly heavy, you could kill someone just as dead with a head 1/100th of the size.
>>
Speaking of realistic weapons, how realistic would the drang twin spears and hammers be? Twin spears is some anime fate shit and I don't even think I've seen a depiction of dual maces until now.
>>
>>148206841
>something like smough's is just complete overkill

>>148206845
Twin weapons are a real thing but not commonly used, plus the PC unsurprisingly wields them like an idiot for REASONS
>>
>>148206845
the hammers seem a bit heavy, but as far as realism they're both pretty believable

going into the issues that come with dual wielding in real life is a whole different story though

having 2 spears wouldn't really help you all that much and would more than likely just throw off your balance. two heavy hammers would simply not be able to take advantage of being dual wielded since it would be very hard to parry and counter with them and you're not going to be doing sick spin combos in actual battle
>>
>>148205592
>Abyss Watchers
The run up to this boss sets the mood perfectly, foreshadowing "enemies helping me kill other enemies" right before the actual fight. You hear loud clashing from other side of the door, the sound of constant dueling - eternal combat. Then you open the door and realize that they all decided to stop fighting and lie down so one of them could stand back up extremely slowly and gesture at you. You think this is goofy until the song kicks in and he rushes you.

The third easiest Lord of Cinder, mostly because all the ebin flips in the world can't save them from no poise. A wide open arena is nice and serviceable, especially with all the dashing.
The second stage offers the first "1v1 big guy with a big weapon" since Iudex, which is extremely refreshing after the previous mob choked shit shows.

Despite being in the shields are for no skill scrubs club no one taught them how to parry. Comboing a parry into a low damage space creating kick would've been a good way to shut down R1 spam while not being too brutal. It also makes sense, as Pinhead has a lot of dashes to choose from for a follow up.

Then you get the sword for yourself, and swallow disappointment when you realize sick grinds don't replace good damage and small parry windows. Fun to use though.

The (in comparison) huge sword gave the guy huge range, which makes fighting against pretty much everyone but a cohesive pikemen unit much easier. It was often held up in the area of the blade that is blunt, this area was often also wrapped in leather to make this easier.

Other stuff I heard but can't confirm is the armor piercing potential of the huge sword being swung at people. Fact of the matter is, the weight wasn't ever an advantage to take seriously. The range is. If you can swing and hit the other guy but he can't, you're well in the safe zone.

A lot of Souls weapons, especially the smaller ones and polearms, were very real weapons, but there's also some that are surprising in having real inspirations.

Here's a crescent axe, for example.

Realistic dual wielding is generally rapier-dagger (the latter being the basis of the parrying dagger) or rapier-rapier. There's also a historical basis for Onikiri-style use of a katana and a wakizashi/tanto at the same time. So far as I know nothing else saw anything approaching common use.

Well, technically sword/shield counts I guess.

The drang spears are well designed and used poorly.
The left drang spear has a guard for parrying and is shorter to help with deflecting. It has a thin head for piercing. You slash with it.
The right drang spear has a broad head for slashing. You exclusively thrust with it. It has a guard / stop for two-handing and pulling the spear out if it's stuck.

You wouldn't use them ambidextrously, you'd use the left in the manner of a staff, to protect your left side, or to hook around an opponent's shield.
You'd be better off with a real shield though.

Paired maces are a bad idea. Maces are short and not suited to defense, being all about aggressively pushing forward and breaking your enemy.
They are best used one-handed so it's not completely retarded.
Maces are absolutely a weapon you should pair with a shield to help you get inside your enemy's range, usually using your shield to lock / bash your enemy helpless.
Sure, if you could get an opportunity to swing both into an enemy you'd destroy them, but you'd have to outskill and outspace him, much like in the game.

how about dual axes? Is it more of the same? I have a feeling that axes in battle are more of a fantasy thing and less common in real life.
