SL is a joke and if you treat it as such, you'll enjoy it a lot more - especially if you can find other people who also treat it as a joke (of which there are quite a few and this group used to be about).

The kind of clothes you buy depend on your avatar. By now it is standard to have a specific mesh body which replaces the standard avatar.
I am assuming you want to make a female avatar, in which case you should get the maitreya body, which has about >50% market share of newly made mesh clothing.
Some decent shops that make clothes for the maitreya body are blueberry, addams, vale koer and moon elixir.
Two other mesh bodies are popular too, the slink physique hourglass and the belleza line of bodies. The belleza has less clothes available for it but is more detailed and comes with more features.
All those mesh bodies are sold inworld, so just search for "maitreya", "slink" or "belleza" to find the stores.
As for skins I'd recommend The Plastik, Belleza, Alter Ego or The Skinnery. (if you have a mesh body, make sure the skin you buy comes with appliers for it specifically or has omega applier)
