The three DS games are also available for emulation and I'm pretty sure you can still buy them online. The 3DS games have difficulty settings, but I don't know how prevalent the instakills are in this series compared to Wizardry. I don't remember encountering much.

Pick either Sand or Nerve Throw to focus on. Auto-Cloak is very helpful if you don't otherwise have damage mitigation. It's also fine to just save up some points and use them after you hit the level gate.

I don't think this is true. The dungeon designs were particularly bad in SMT1 and the encounter rate is high. Plus encounters can link back to back without break in SMT. Not to mention many regular enemies and bosses pack instakills in SMT games. EO has its share of bullshit too, but I'd just say they're different kinds of difficulty.

I already had nerve bullets and multi hit guns, but I still find the dungeon layouts and encounter rates more tedious than EO. Someone already mentioned I should have been using Estoma which I admit is my own fault for not trying.
I should specify I'm not only talking about SMT1, which I thought I got across by saying "SMT games" earlier. Here's my whole thing: I feel like EO is significantly less restrictive than SMT games are. There are SMT (including side games here too) bosses where if you don't run certain setups I doubt you'd have much success. Once you have the proper setup it's not that bad, but the fact remains there are very limited ways to approach the challenge. EO games feel like they have more viable party setups, where party member changes for particular bosses aren't necessary. I'm not saying you could run 5 troubadours or anything like that, but there are more viable setups on the whole.
If anon just said "EO is like DS" I actually wouldn't object. Both games allow you to find what works for you. Lots of builds are viable across the whole game. The early difficulty is also what drives people off in both games. I just don't think EO is the "dark souls of SMT".
