If you can set up at least one of the engines, wire the solars, and "seal" breaches, you can play engineer.
Easiest way to learn is to try things out. If you're nervous about "ruining" someone else's round, start up a local server and practice at your own pace. Join rounds where there are already other engineers/atmos techs and ask them for help.
No matter what you do, someone will inevitably shit talk you. It's only a video game, and everyone has to start somewhere. Half the time, people shit talking are worse than the people they shit talk, which is why they're complaining instead of doing and getting better
Oh, and if I ever catch you wiring any of the engines into the grid, I will stripspace you in a welded locker. Solars should always be wired into the grid though.

I've had an idea to revamp the staff of necromancy floating around for a while
Converting a corpse to a zombie or skeleton takes a second or two of extended concentration, with its blast ability basically acting as a way to direct and control the zombies. Zombies would no longer be put under player control, instead being as mentioned under the control of the staff, and having their revive ability, this should be easy work.
Rather than it being the necro skeleton when you convert a corpse to a skeleton, the corpse is converted into a skellington who's slaved to the will of the necromancer. Once somebody's a skellington, they can't be reconverted.
So, sentient but weak skellingtons, or dumb brutish zombie hordes.
