How fares your empire, /gsg/?

This day in history, July 10th:

Following his victory in Bathaniyya, Baudouin begins to emphasize a shift in the administration of his newly conquered territories, to a model less feudal and more centralized. His vassals are encouraged to expect that there will always be an Aleramici King on the throne, and that they must always deal with an Aleramici; that it behooves his vassals to trust the Aleramici and serve them faithfully, because only the Aleramici might reward them for their service. This goes beyond the mere authority of the monarch, which has, for the past several decades, been roughly balanced with that of the nobility; this is about centralization, about encouraging his vassals to remember that his House holds the Kingdom and always will, about gathering power in the hands of the monarch.

Or, at least, that is what Baudouin expects the shift to do. In reality, it gives his vassals just as much right to centralize power in their own families' hands over time. The decision might not be so well-regarded in the future.

Also, sorrowfully, it is at this time that Baudouin learns of the death of his mother, Botokhui Borjigin. Her strong body held on for many years following the onset of her illness, but in the end her mind never recovered. After a long atrophy, Botokhui finally passed from the world to join her Aubry in heaven above.

Botokhui will be known to history as the "Mother of Jerusalem," and she will share, alongside her predecessor Eirene Komnenos, the unique distinction of being a shared ancestor of every Aleramici King of Jerusalem, for no male dynastic line of the Aleramici in Jerusalem can exist without being descended from both her blood and that of Eirene.

As per her own wishes and the wishes of her husband Aubry, Botokhui is buried beside him in the family crypt, with the coffin of their infant son Temoudjine placed atop her own.

Pontifex Maximus Stephanus X, presumably entirely misled about the location of Yemen or its population of Christians, nevertheless declares a Crusade there to free it from the infidel.

Although calling Yemen a poor territory would be a true understatement, Baudouin is nevertheless interested in participating in the Crusade, if for no other reason than that it might stop the constant expansion of Aegyptus into the Arabian peninsula, and expand Christianity further still. Although he still shakes his head over the target of the Crusade, Baudouin nevertheless pledges for it immediately.

Predictably, Jerusalem is one of the few states that is even able to reach Yemen, and the trek to the distant territory is a difficult one even for them. Nevertheless, Baudouin and Prince Aubry the Elder make it to the capital at Sa'naa and engage with the forces of the Ayyubid Sultan Amr.

During the fighting Baudouin engages and personally captures Sultan Amr, bringing the entire Crusade to an end before the battle is even completed. For his heroic personal efforts, the Pontiff grants him the Kingdom of Yemen.

Had the Aegyptians not monopolized the Hijaz it is possible that Baudouin could have administrated Yemen on his own, but as things stand, with the only naval forces available to him in the Red Sea originating in the Sinai, the lone port of Elim, and a few fishing boats provided from al-Jawf, he knows there is no way that Jerusalem might actually retain control of the territory. The matter, then, comes to a decision: who to grant it to?

The King briefly contemplates granting the title to Gerardino Aleramici, his distant relative and the husband of his daughter Bourgogne, but dismisses the idea; Gerardino is Italian and the entirety of his noble vassalage would be French, causing the same problems Aegyptus experienced back when it, too, was under Aleramici hands.

The choice, then, must be between his two sons. And, unfortunately, this is no real choice either; by law, only a pittance of titles might be granted to his eldest son prior to his own death, so that they might be equally divided. Therefore, in spite of Prince Aubry the Younger being the elder of his two sons, Baudouin must grant the title of King of Yemen to his younger (albeit more talented) son, Adalbert.

In addition to the Kingdom of Yemen, one other Crusader state is established in the region: Drzislav's Crusaders, a band of rabble from Croatia, seize the castle of Zufar in eastern Yemen and proclaim themselves independent from the Kingdom of Yemen, although aligned with it. Baudouin finds them annoying, but leaves them as a problem for his son Adalbert to handle.
>>
>>148038903
But the actual Crusaders in real life expanded their territories

Andronikos Branas, formerly Basileius Andronikos II, brother-in-law to Baudouin by marriage to his sister Guillaumette, called Baudouin into a campaign against a rebelling vassal of the Seljuk Sultan, Ibrahim "the Wolf." As a good Christian King and a staunch ally, Baudouin answers his call with the fullness of his levies and gives battle to the enemy host in the mountains of Elbistan.

Unfortunately, in the course of the fighting Prince Aubry the Elder met with Ibrahim and engaged him in single combat. While Aubry was more skilled than Ibrahim with the blade, it was only just--and Ibrahim got lucky, plunging his sword into the heart of his enemy and fleeing the field.

When Aubry was found hours later by his brother, Baudouin wept openly over the corpse of his younger brother, swearing vengeance against Ibrahim and his whole clan for taking from him not only his greatest general and most leal vassal, but one of his closest friends.

Although Baudouin requested that Aubry be buried in the royal crypt in Jerusalem, his wife Adalaida de Toulouse refused, preferring instead to bury him at "Mont Baudouin," the temple complex King Baudouin V constructed at the base of Mount Sinai in Nekhel, Aubry's seat for the short time that he ruled the Sinai. It is a just request, and Baudouin VI permits her to bury her husband in the temple built by his grandfather.

I might, but we'll see what happens. I'm not only bound by my characters' traits but also by events, and I've got no idea if a Crusader Empire is even a feasible thing in terms of how far I intend to expand. I have de jure empires turned on (meaning there are only three: the Holy Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and Persia), so I would need to expand and become large enough to found my own, which I'm not at all certain I could do. I also don't know what my goals would be if I established a theoretical "Crusader Empire," or what my new goals would be.

Baudouin kept his promise to his enemy, recklessly assaulting the capital of Ibrahim the Wolf as rapidly as his army could march to it. There he captured the entirety of Ibrahim's family--he would random those that Ibrahim could afford to pay for, then gradually execute those he could not (which happened to be Ibrahim's two young daughters, his only children), sending their heads to the Muslim lord, "as repayment for the slaughter of my brother"--but, to his surprise, Baudouin finds someone he did not expect in Ibrahim's dungeons: his son's father-in-law, Khan of Khans Ukhuna.

The Khan still cannot speak French, nor can any of Baudouin's band speak Mongolian, but Baudouin's actions speak for themselves: in spite of the recognition of the Khan of Khan's and his jabbering pleas (undoubtedly for help), Baudouin passes him by. "Whatever the fool did to find himself here, he does not deserve the assistance of a true Christian King," Baudouin told his followers as they explored the remainder of the dungeons, ensuring that none were hiding within. "We will see if Andronikos lets him out; his fate is not my concern."

As it turns out Andronikos did free him, and the furious Ukhuna did not forget that Baudouin had refused to help him, in spite of their ties of marriage. Yet what could he do--did he dare to fight Jerusalem again?

King Baudouin's son Adalbert, King of Yemen, had been involved in an engagement against Drzislav's Crusaders for some time, a war which Baudouin was pledged to but hoped he would not need to become involved in due to the long distance from Jerusalem. Unfortunately, when a Muslim host seeking to reclaim part of Yemen declared war on his son, Baudouin knew that Jerusalemite troops would be necessary to put down the Mohammedan uprising, and he began rallying his forces.

Although the march is long, Baudouin is confident that his son can hold out in the interim. He has recently been married to the (admittedly none-too-bright) Queen of Alodia and Makouria, Iesousyko II Solomonid. Playing on her fears of the Ayyubid invasion (for, prior to the loss of Yemen, the fleeing Ayyubid Sultan had launched a desperate invasion of Alodia and Abyssinia and had even managed to secure significant lands within; his current capital is located there, in Angot), Adalbert convinced her that only his assistance--and, by extension, the assistance of his father--could guarantee her safety. And thus the Aleramici dynasty is poised to inherit significant lands in eastern Africa, so long as Iesousyko II can be kept on her throne, and Adalbert on his.

As Baudouin sets out on the march to relieve him, he receives word that his son Aubry's wife Gurbesu has given birth to a baby boy, whom Aubry has named after himself (none too humble, the prince). Although the child is ugly as sin, as he grows all would come to acknowledge that he is nevertheless just as bright as any of Bourgogne's children, if nowhere near as beautiful

Following the death of several council members, King Baudouin is finally able to begin implementing restrictions on the power of the Council thanks to the appointment of several loyalists, namely his brother Philippe and son Aubry. Although he knows that it will take decades to curb the power of the Council fully, if it is even possible, Baudouin nevertheless knows that he must begin making the effort immediately.

First and foremost, Baudouin forces his council to acknowledge that he has the right to revoke any of his vassals' titles at any time, for any reason. Although this sits most uneasily with all council members, Philippe included, they count of the sense of justice their King possesses as insurance that he will not merely revoke titles at his whim... as it is now within his power to do so.

They've been adding a lot to the game with the patches like diplomatic mode map, more fleshed out federations and stuff, if they keep this up I feel like the game should finally be playable at the end of the year or so.
>>
>>148044198
As of 1.2 it's still a bit of a disaster.
They added slave revolts but the faction system is terrible so you can't really manage your slave population. Either they rebel or they run away or they are completely docile, and you can't really do much about it unless you have tons of resources to spend on suppressing them every few months.

Also tachyon lances are completely overpowered and there's no reason not to use them, but the mid-game is so dull and uninteresting that I've never even reached that point.
Instead of balancing the combat, 1.2 just massively increased combat range, which means ships engage from several AU away and will often aggro on distant mining stations after killing a spaceport. There's no disengage button and retreating costs a ton of HP, so you can't really pull out of a system until most of the mining stations have been destroyed.

Shortly after Baudouin finally leaves Jerusalemite territory on the road to Yemen, he receives word via courier that his wife, Gudrun von Limburg, is pregnant with their fifth child.

Baudouin and Gudrun had been married for over 15 years, and they got along well together, although truth be told it was mostly because of Gudrun's great beauty. Her personality--like that of her daughter Bourgogne, in some respects--left much to be desired, but she understood the duties of a woman and wife and, in that capacity, Baudouin and she worked well together. It was thus with great sorrow, although perhaps not true grief, that Baudouin received word several weeks later that she had died. Always a frail woman, it appears that a pregnancy at her age was more than her body could handle.

Already mourning her loss, Baudouin realizes that he will not only need to find a new wife when he returns to Jerusalem--for he is far too young to not remarry--but he will also need to personally tell his son Adalbert that his mother is dead. It is an unenviable task.

After a late night does of Concerta I got to work on v1.5 of the mod. It will mostly be balancing so that the AI has a more reasoned ability to raise forces before a war which will depend on their leader's military and administrative ability. Similarly, the player will have a decision allowing him to start mobilizing levies for war which will make war taxes less effective and I'll increase their war exhaustion gain even higher, while the raising levies decision will be balanced by giving you severe penalties for not declaring war within a set timeframe of when you made the decision (which will be based on your choices of how to prepare in an event based on the decision, with each choice either giving you more time to prepare but less resources to do it or the inverse). The decision's effectiveness will also be based on your own leader's military ability and administrative score, with low scores in either leading to less benefits and greater maluses for both taking the decision as well as for not declaring war in time.

Conquer so you can revoke it from them by plot and make it your own almost immediately. You want a good demesne of 6-8.

Vassals can't join factions if you have a non-aggression pact with them.

Tribal taxes are basically nothing anyway.

If you want to convert their religion/culture to yours, you'll want them in your realm so you can educate their children.

Your realm with reform into feudalism together, which makes them much stronger, while tributaries will just stay shit.

There's good reason to have both IMO.

The match which Baudouin eventually decides upon is with Princess Eglantine Angelos of Aegyptus, sister of the reigning King there, Payen Angelos. Although the animosity between clan Angelos and House Aleramici has not truly dissipated, the Angelos line which rules in Aegyptus is not only Francophone but also Catholic, a much easier mix to tolerate than the Greek Orthodox branch.

Although Eglantine is neither particularly skilled nor particularly courtly--when the King finally meets her upon his return to Jerusalem he would discover that she often behaves oddly, in a way which he could never quite put his finger upon--she at least secures him an alliance with Aegyptus.

No, I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. I'm not the brightest when it comes to modding, admittedly, but when I searched for how to do it it always seemed like I was just finding how to create a CoA template rather than how to implement a single CoA for a single dynasty. And, to be honest, even what it was talking about for the templates was way over my head. Unlike a simple drag-and-drop (which it fucking should be) it seems like you need to edit seven or eight files to get a single CoA properly implemented, although that could have just been me misinterpreting the guide I was reading.

I was actually going to ask if any anons who weren't retarded could help me, but it slipped my mind.

help pls

In midsummer 1291 Gersenda Aleramici, the eldest daughter of Baudouin's now-dead brother Aubry, comes of age. Under the tutelage of Baudouin Gersenda has grown to become a diplomat to rival his own daughter Bourgogne, much to the pleasure of the King; he is happy to have honored his brother so. Next, however, comes the issue of marriage--and the issue of whether to send Gersenda away. As his niece, she is a valuable commodity, and could provide a mighty alliance to Jerusalem. But she is also blood, and the Aleramici are more loyal to one another than those of other houses.

In the end, Baudouin decides upon a novel solution: he betrothes Gersenda to her second cousin Thiebaut, son of Bourgogne and her husband Gerardino.

Although issues of consanguinity would usually prevent such a marriage, being second cousins is just distant enough for the Bishops of Jerusalem to acknowledge that there is no religious wrong in the union. Moreover, it strengthens Theibaut's hand in any potential succession.

For Baudouin has intentions on the succession of Jerusalem.

Baudouin is called into yet another campaign, this time a dual action of helping Aegyptus force tributary status on the Emir of Qinnasrin and assisting Adalbert in throwing out the Bulgarian Band--which has somehow seized the coast of Hijaz from Mecca clear down to al-Ma'afir, on the coast near Aden--from his rightful territories in Yemen. In the course of the fighting, Baudouin begins to be recognized for his strategies on a level previously reserved for his brother Aubry.

Although those who acknowledge that Baudouin has gradually been improving his talents also acknowledge that even now, with the weight of a state behind him, he is not Aubry's equal, nevertheless they acknowledge that he is at least growing into a general to be feared, certainly one of the best in Christendom, and perhaps comparable to King Aubry in his middle years.

Baudouin cares little for the conversations swirling around himself; he knows his skill, and he knows he is improving. What his courtiers and his nobles say is irrelevant, and whether he ever matches his departed brother is also irrelevant: so long as he does everything he can to serve Christ in battle, that is enough.

CK2 makes me really depressed sometimes.
I just was playing as the Kingdom of Mumu and was trying to conquer all of Ireland. Over generations my kings shed the bloods of thousands and thousands of people just to take control. So many peasants died and for what? Their lives didn't really change. Just the lord they swore fealty to changed.

I looked up Ireland on a real globe and it is actually this little tiny island...and the globe is just a speck in the universe...all that death for a speck...

Idk I know that Mumu didn't really take over Ireland but so much death in humanity came from lords causing people to kill each other for things that weren't really worth it...

Idk I know this is just a video game and it is fun to play but occasionally these thoughts pop into my head when I see the army numbers quickly following for whatever reason.
When I sacrifice hundreds to fighting a siege because I get bored waiting them out...
What about y'all? This game is super awesome but do these thoughts ever pop into your head?

In the Kingdom of Jerusalem, there are 4 distinct languages and one dialect spoken by the nobility: French and its dialect Occitan, Greek, the German of the Low Countries, and Mashriq Arabian. French is undeniably the court language of Jerusalem and all major nobility speak it fluently, but it is usually only used in dealing directly with the Crown, and in such a way the minor nobility are often able to obscure themselves from royal review through the simple means of an effective language barrier.

With the help of his last surviving brother Philippe, King Baudouin has succeeded in breaking down this barrier. Already fluent in French and Occitan, Baudouin has, through great toil, taught himself the passing use of all the other languages of the major courts within Jerusalem. He is now not only able to communicate with his vassalage in their own languages, but to read ledgers and books in these tongues as well. Undoubtedly, this will help to keep his vassals honest.

Seems like dead hours again today, so I'm going to stop here. I've played far ahead and I'll probably play even further tonight, so I'll have plenty of stuff to post tomorrow.
