It's stupid threadly renpy question time.
If I need to move an imagebutton n pixels to the right and n pixels down for every created iteration of this imagebutton, how do I write a transform to do this? In pseudocode:
>for i in enumerate(buttons_list):
>imagebutton at position
and for the transform:
>xalign 0.5+(position_modifier which is lets say 50 pixels) yalign 0.5+position_modifier
>and make position_modifier get multiplied by i (so for the third button transform will move it 100 pixels etc)
I just can't organize it in my head, maybe someone has any ideas

There are 11M people using Steam right at this moment and (almost) none of them have heard about your game yet. Make a good game and you'll be good
>>
>>148032905
if you give a steam key with the KS reward, won't it still count for the daily purchase/download popularity?
>>
>>148033152
From a pure mathematical point of view, yes, very much so. You would benefit from not putting effort into making something that won't sell/only you will like. There are other mediums and other userbases. EVNs are not your only option, they're just the cheapest in terms of audiovisual presentations of a story.
>>
>>148032905
If you set your kickstarter to a sufficient amount to fund the game's creation, any sales afterwards are gravy, so it doesn't matter that much. In practicality there will always be sales afterwards because there will be people who missed the kickstarter, or who only buy finished products, or who hear about it because they see a friend playing it on steam, and so on.
>>148033540
I don't think this is well known, too many private algorithms at work. My guess would be that it does not count for the 'top seller' list, but if people with a free key PLAY it, it counts for a different set of internal popularity measurements.
>>
>>148032905

I'm not a steamworks dev but my best friend is. You request them from Steam. I personally had to send out each one, one-by-one. It was a very long and laborious process.
>>
>>148036894
More or less. You request them in batches from Steam (you can have batches labeled as to their purpose, which may help you track them later), they send you a giant list in a text file, then you do whatever with them.

Did anyone hear about Winged Cloud having no plans to continue Sakura Fantasy, because the first chapter didn't sell as much as they hoped? They posted about it on their patreon.
>>
>>148065317
There was much grousing on /u/
>>
>>148065745
It's another strike against episodic vns.
>>
>>148066313
I think it's more that the game took too much effort to make for Winged Cloud.
>>
>>148066923
mostly, they're lazy
but yes, episodic is dangerous because developers use it to 'test the waters' and are very prone to canceling if the result isn't as awesome as they hoped
>>
>>148066923
How? It wasn't any longer or asset heavy than their other games. Maybe Sakura Beach 2 just convinced them that sequels sell like shit. Sakura Fantasy wasn't a very good performer for Winged Cloud.
>>
>>148066923
Are you sure you're thinking of the right game? There was no more effort put into Sakura Fantasy than any of their other regular VNs.
>>
>>148067342
The other problem is the amount of time that had elapsed since Chapter 1 came out. People can lose interest and not remember where the story left off. Episodic game makers should take a note from Star Wars and include a brief summary of previous events.
>>
>>148067732
They put slightly more effort into writing it. There was some semblance of the beginning of a story.
>>
>>148067908
A star fell from the sky.
'Because it's important' justification x100.

Generic sells. Look at Sakura games. All their characters look exactly the same with mix and match skin, eye colors and hair types. They all have the same base. How many people buy those games? More of them than the ones buying any other awesome and unique EVN. People are easy to pander to. So why are you risking everything by making something unique and interesting when you can spend half the time and make another Sakura/Japanese highschool game?

>>148070937
>why be a jew and write crap to make money when you could make something unique and interesting that you will feel good about and could touch the hearts of others?
Gee I don't know.

And unique VNs can sell well, most cases where genuinely great and interesting evns have flopped is a case of failure to advertise it properly more than anything else. People can't buy your game if they don't know it exists.
>>
>>148073640
>to make money
You answered your own question. Money makes the world go around. Happiness can't be had on an empty stomach.
>>
>>148074009
If your goal is to make money then why are you making an evn? That's the real question desu senpai. If you're making a VN and you're serious about it, you've already decided to eschew traditional career paths in favor of following your dreams and doing what you love. Why stop halfway there?
>>
>>148074307
>If your goal is to make money then why are you making an evn?

My goal is to make money and enjoy doing it. Funnily enough, I'm making one of those unique VNs that probably won't sell. Speaking hard truths and venting frustrations gets me through the long weeks. Especially when posting volume is low. I agree that unique EVNs can sell, but I think we can both agree that it's an uphill battle without serving your potential customers boobs on a platter or the usual tropes. That said, games like Cinders do give me some hope.
>>
>>148075463
Really a lot of it is luck and knowing how to advertise. Too many genuinely good games fail because the creator thought they could rely on the quality alone and didn't generate adequate interest in it.
>>
>>148075992
How do I generate adequate interest in it?
>>
>>148078345
Have some kind of blog or website with regular updates of projects. Nice, pretty, shiny art will also get people's attention as well, so if you have it, flaunt it. Be smart with how you word the synopsis of the game, it's the "hook" and what most people will use to decide if they're interested in your game, so you need to make it count.

And most importantly lots and lots of lowkey shilling. People shit on shills all the time but it's actually pretty important as far as getting the info out there that your game exists and might be good. You just can't be too obvious about it.
>>
>>148078879
Also don't talk about a great project, get people interested, and go radio silent for two years and expect people to still remember or care when it's finished.

I am not worthy to work on a game anon. I am not even worthy to post in this thread. I only wish to bask in the glory that is this thread so that I might take some of the talent from here and one day in the far far future be able to create something resembling a VN.
>>
>>148125191
It's too exhausting for me to write a self insert protag. I like to let my characters tell me the story.
>>
I am going to play every free VN on itch.io (231 of them). Any recommendations or should I just get to it?
>>
>>148125518
Tough luck. Everyone's too paranoid to post here. The few who have the guts to post are either secure with what they're doing or amateurs who have no shame or worries on positing their crud.

Just work on it already.
>>
>>148125191
Self inserting is only good in 100% dating sims. If you want to have a plot, ready the MC's personality.
>>
>>148125657
I can't seem to pick a story to work on. Every time I pick one I want to change it a few days later to something completely different. Go ahead and laugh anon. I'll never make it.
>>
>>148125191
Second, but it would depend how the narration is - you usually shouldn't need it unless it's at the start to set events up.

I'd like to play a character that has something to add rather than a self-insert with, often bland, choices. Seeing as you can have choices all the same with an actual personality to your protagonist, you can usually have choices that reflect that and develop that character over time - or, more or less, show us what kind of character they are, anyway.

Keep self-insert for things that really don't care about their plot, like eroge or dating.
>>
>>148125780
I will only laugh at you if you give up on yourself, anon. Get yourself together and focus.
>>
>>148125191
I really don't like switching the PoV in VNs, I find it much more awkward than regular novels. So I always have a named protagonist with a history, but never leave their PoV so I can see how one might feel like "you are the MC."
>>
>>148125743
This. I simply don't see how can you do anything of interest in a VN with a full self-insert dildo MC. Either you let the player choose every little detail and end up with a meaningless and shallow plot to accomodate every possible choice (Skyrim lol), or you make every choice irrelevant beyond a line or two of flavor text and railroad the shit out of them.
>>
>>148064372
>agreed to make some changes to avoid stepping on too many toes. Nothing too major, mostly related to the GUI and using "Go! Go!" in the title.
>>
>>148125780
Pick an idea and just roll with it - it's gonna be shit, but it'll be your shit and you'll be better off for producing that shit. I like to point people to the nanowrimo thought, which sitting down and writing a novel in a month. Majority are bad ideas, but you only get invested half way through them, you only really come to terms with what your characters are capable of later on. So sit the fuck down and write your current idea out and don't move on at all, you'll come to love your creation. And don't worry about art for your first vn, it should be practice only. Don't worry how your writing is doing - because we all make the mistake of comparing it to what we've seen and thinking it should at least be on that level, well it won't man.
>>
Thanks for the replies. It looks like named protagonist it is. Now if only I could think of something interesting to make it about.

>>148126315
Yeah my writing is shit and art takes me longer than most probably. I guess I should make a few small ones first.

What about a first person VN where you can influence the character's decisions, but it still feels like they are their own person?

I find that Jap VNs tend to do this a lot better than eVNs with shit like Shirou and Takeru.

Play more RPGs for research. It is possible to let the player identify strongly with the main character and give them a lot of options while also giving the protagonist a backstory and encouraging the player to roleplay as the character.
>>
>>148130829
I can't understand why so many people seem to think self insert means no personality or backstory. Players often insert as people they WANT to be or identify with, not only as characters who are husks meant for them to project onto.

Here's the Reach for the Stars-A Yuri Visual Novel breakdown of costs.

>700 - CG's
>1200 - Background Art
>300 - Music
>180+ - KS Fees

Stretch goals
>2800 - Mara will have a route
>3200 - If I can reach 3200 it means I can add more CG's. As you can see 700 means 14 CG's (basing this off my artist's prices).
>4400 - More backgrounds for the game.
>5500 - After stories and love scenes... The after stories will take place when they are grown up (age 18-21)
>8000 - Partial voice acting!

They raised $8,024, so they have no margin for error. If their artists flake or they underestimated something, then obviously something has to go.
>>
>>148134907
Seems like it would be easy to cut back on what partial voice acting means if they didn't specify.

>>
>>148140436
I'd say that's 50 dollar quality easily. Colors are alright, lines are pretty good. It's easy on the eyes. The tree is huge, but for 50 dollars it isn't a killer.
>>
>>148137721
You can use my two CC BGs if you like. They're old and totally unrelated to each other too! https://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=24885
>>
>>148140637
yeah it's not that bad save for the tree
>>
>>148140637
there is literally no detail going on in most of the artists backgrounds. The character is pretty ugly when colored in here compared to their sketches/lineart. Honestly, this is pretty bad for 50 bucks man.
>>
>>148140767
>tfw I can't use the majority of free bg's if I wanted to because they're mostly all modern or school themed
>>
>>148143098
Show us an artist you think is better for the same price or less.
>>
>>148143486
Because I have on hand that kind of info. Pretty sure if you wanted to you'd just read the first forum page on dA to find that info. As it stands, that bg work is something people would tack on for free, counting it as a "simple bg". The foliage is literally a brush to get that exact effect - the tree is not at all impressive, an amateur could produce the same result. The only redeeming quality is the window border and the character linework.
>>
>>148143909
>The only redeeming quality is the window border and the character linework.

Which comes with the BG for 50 bucks. That price is bretty good for what you get.
>>
>>148144536
Maybe if you only use the lemma forums.
