>What is it?
Pokemon Go can be described simply as the Geocaching of Pokemon. Grab your smartphone, get some exercise, catch some mons, battle some people - the usual Pokemon gig.
Basic info:
As you traverse the real world, as represented on the in-game map, you'll occasionally run into tufts of rustling grass. Approaching these will end with a Pokémon appearing on the map, and clicking on it will initiate a battle.
Battles aren't between two Pokémon, though. They're between a Pokémon and your ability to swipe a Poké Ball in their direction. When you engage a Poké Ball, a colored ring will appear around the opponent. These change in size after each capture attempt. Throwing a Ball during a smaller window seems to be more effective, based on our time with the game, but that's a part we're still trying to figure out.
Going near water will attract water Pokémon. Playing at night brings out more nocturnal creatures, like Clefairy and Gastly.
Hatching Eggs: Each Egg displays the number of kilometers you must walk for the Egg to hatch. In general, the more kilometers required, the rarer the Pokémon that will hatch. A notification will appear when the Egg has hatched.
Make sure you have the Pokémon GO app open while you walk. Kilometers walked when the Pokémon GO app is closed won’t count toward hatching your Eggs.

It doesn't use a signal. Your phone figures out your location based on the GPS satellites. Everyone in the world uses the same couple of satellites so it's not them that is fucking up. This thing was designed for the military, it doesn't use a data uplink.

I don't think you need it; the camera is used by the game to integrate the Pokemon into the environment around you, but there is a mode where you can disable this (which is sometimes recommended in low lighting/crowded areas). The camera also gets turned on for taking regular photos, with the Pokemon you are battling overlaid on them, which you can then save onto the phone.

Even though the WoW servers crashed constantly and when you got back on after an hour in queue you immediately got lag frozen as soon as you looted something, at least you could tell that WoW would be an actual game with things to do, places to explore and skills to master when it eventually worked. I mean you had nearly a dozen classes, each of which you had to learn their skillset, dozens of instances, thousands of quests, thousands of items to discover, world PvP, AH, etc.
I can't say the same for PoGo. All I'm getting from PoGo is that it's a game where you walk around and then swipe the screen. Repeat thousands of times. Walk. Swipe. Walk. Swipe. There isn't even any real combat in it or ways to progress other than walk/swipe/walk/swipe. No skills, no quests, no special items or things to discover, not even chat, friending, trade, or real combat. It's like a pre-alpha game that was launched missing 90% of the basic features anyone would expect in even the shittiest indie game.

In settings you can put it on battery saver mode which turns the screen off when your phone is upside down (and turns it on when it is upright) automatically, and still gives you notifications.
I have it on but sometimes I can't touch anything on my screen even though the screen still updates (e.g. touch the menu or nearby pokemon = nothing happens). Then I have to restart the game. Not sure if that's from a bug in that setting or if it's because the servers are fucked.
