My situation is a mess but i'm pretty sure i've collected enough dosh on Steam for the game, still...
Are the Characters any good?
I've heard you can get them without the DLCs too but i'm not sure about it.
So here my question: are the DLCs characters important at the point to not play the game without them or i may lose some key events or some good story?

How exactly does this work? Is it one route per playthrough or do I just pick the order I do these in? Anything I can miss by choosing the wrong one first?
