So fighting those space stations is almost as equal as fighting a fallen empire. when about 4 times with fleets of 8k+ and they trashed them like nothing.

After I got ark emiters the thing went easier.

I want to believe this for Stellaris. Isnt it like one of their biggest sellers now? I have a feeling we were meant to have the last 2 patchs spread out over more than 2 months because of the changes being made.

Maybe once the holiday is over the crunch will be real and the finger will be removed from anus on the holes.

Nevermind my original post then, but there are things that happened that arent on there so I shall continue to naively remain hopeful for the bandaid because I like the game for quite a few reasons

While I wait would anything similar be worth checking out? Stellaris has me hooked for more but might be worth taking a break.

Well they use shields and lots of energy weapons so I'm not sure point defense is going to help you, or armor pen
Basically take that fleet you have and destroy the portal, if you clear them out great if not they can't get reinforcements and you can win by attrition

>>
>>147601716
Well, half the relevant weapons still ignore most of your armor, and the other half still completely ignore your shields.
So yeah. Crystal plating requires no energy and never gets ignored.

I honestly do not remember what kind of changes to the irrelevant shit weapons they introduced, or if it's the next patch that will change them.
Please notify me if I'm being a huge faggot and they actually managed to make starfighters or mass drivers relevant.

But weapon and combat balance as a whole are still so fucked up that it'll require some major modwork and DLC to fix.

> Strike Craft rebuild speed improved from 1 per month to 4 per month
> All Laser Weapons have had their armor penetration reduced from 50% to 33%
> Plasma Weapons have had their armor penetration reduced from 100% to 75%
> Most Projectile Weapons now deal +15% damage vs. Shields
> Crystal-Forged Plating effect on Hull Points reduced by 25%

Also Lasers got an accuracy buff across the board while mid-late lasers got a damage nerf.
Rockets got a damage buff.
Lances got their Armor Penetration nerfed from 100% to 75%.
Point Defense got an accuracy nerf but range buff.

Thats pretty much it.
>>

mass drivers are pretty great early game actually. it provides rudimentary shield penetration during the corvette phase where AI kinda *has* to go shields because armor tech is so garbage.
>>

The problem is that there is just nothing impressive about anything shown so far, the visuals have at best stagnated, the character design looks really bizarre and terrible, and the gameplay changes aren't revolutionary shit, its been done already.

That wasn't much of a problem of me, I kinda liked it but I can understand why would someone dislike it

One thing I didn't like about Civ V's wonder system was it's rendering cap, which was 7 IIRC. If one city builds more than 7 wonders, you only see the first 7 on the map and the rest won't be shown. I bet most people don't even know wonders like CN tower or Eiffel tower actually have models, because they have never seen them.

If I wonderwhore hard in Civ VI I want to see every wonder in the city(most likely capital)

>>
>>147604153
> Increased the engagement range of strike craft from 80 to 120
This kind of shit is what convinces me that Paradox balances purely based on numbers. Now combined-arms fleet is even less useful because oops, some random carrier decided to puke fighters at a goddamn mining station and now my corvettes are approaching the enemy's main fleet at turtle-paced combat speed. The more changes they make, the more they encourage "pure" fleets against all logic.
>>
>>147604638
This.
They need to push it in the other direction so that mixed fleets are the ideal.
>>
>>147604153
>Lances got their Armor Penetration nerfed from 100% to 75%.
They should give shields the ability to mitigate energy damage, that would make kinetic artillery a viable choice again and shields actually somewhat useful since right now using shields is fucking retarded.

>Base Happiness reduced from 60% to 50%
>Happiness is now a linear modifier, with levels above 50% giving bonuses and levels below 50% giving penalties

The pre-patch rule was that 60% happiness is the baseline, where the breakpoints of 80% and 90% happiness provided a 10% and 20% productivity boost respectively.

Now in 1.2.1 after the Asimov Update, the baseline is 50%, and the 20% are spread across 50 to 100%. That's 20/50=0.4% productivity per 1% of happiness.

combined with pacifist/xenophile to enable the void cloud research and Adaptive and you get 20% on all planets of your biome from very early game.

The problem right now on Hard/Insane is that you no longer have that explosive start to keep up with the cheating AI.

I haven't followed anything strategy related for a while so I'm seeing these now, have you guys already discussed everything Civ VI related? Looking through civfanatics' CIV VI forum btw

For example, cities with walls now have two health bars, one for walls and one for cities. You actually have to siege for wall's health now, you can't just attack a city with archers and then conquer it with a melee unit

Also it looks like they changed moving a bit. For example, in Civ V you could move to grasslands and hills in the same turn if you had 2 movement points, even though hills themselves counted 2 points you could enter them with 1 point. This has been changed, now if you want to enter someplace with 2 points, you actually have to have two points. And I think if it requires 3 points, you give an order one turn, and in the next turn it moves (2 points from previous turn and one point from the next turn).

These might be wrong, I'm reading the threads from their beginnings and I'm about 20 days behind of the current date, something might have been changed

Those building change depending on era ofc. It looks like ancient and modern era buildings look similiar in every civ though. Influence is so fucked up lately. Protectorates no longer give you it because the diplo settings automatically sign you up to a defensive pact with all your vassals and protectorates. So protectorate is +1 and -1, vassals are -1.

Liberate Planet in your wargoals deposes the alien government and sets up a new one that has your ethics. And hopefully that should then go on to convert the populace to your ethics.
Otherwise use mind control lasers on your stations, theocratic government types, and reeducation campaign edicts
>>
>>147624430
when you "liberate" a planet you convert all pops in that planet to your ethos. liberate some planets (no more than 2-3 at a time regardless of your own epite's size because Relative Empire Size malus scales up stupidly high) and demand vassalization immediately afterwards before they start racking up too much Border Conflict or Distance malus.

I'm stuck in a war in Stellaris.
>impossible war goals

I'm part of an alliance and another member has declared war on a neighbour. However yet another empire (on the other side of the defender) has also declared war on them and seized one of the planets that are part of the goals that my allied empire set.

So now I can't end this war, expand the alliance, etc. because that external empire is blocking the planet my ally is supposed to conquer. I've already reached 100 warscore, but that one planet can't be conquered.

Yes, I could maybe declare war on the other empire who snatched the planet, but I'd rather have them in my alliance and form a federation, they also shield me from the swarm.

WAT DO?

I just realized that I could never build enough ships to compete with fucking Normal AI.

I had a smaller total of ships - basically one big 4.5K fleet and 2 other placeholder fleets that were around 7-8K a piece. I destroyed an enemy fleet that was 4K pretty easily, because my technology was better; but they grew another 4k fleet in response like a month later.

I guess I shouldn't have let them conquer the other Empire several in-game hours earlier, since it allowed them to have more resources than me. Stellaris is a game where you have to plan several generations ahead in-game or your race gets fucked.

Not really. Satamarine is fairly useless as it's rare that you have problems filling up planets anyway. A world with plenty of food and high habitability is where you need it LEAST. 5% habitability no-food Tomb Worlds is where it might actually make a difference.

>>

Also skill trees and research system is far more complex. Its a pick as you go skill tree and not RNG shit like stellaris is. There are like 5 different era you can be in from extremely primative space travel to extremely futuristic and advanced. There are far more traits, features and political systems you can explore including races, tens more races than stellaris but again this all adds to complexity and whether or not you like all that added shit

Check your population for divergence. Different ethics cause tons of unhappiness.

The quickest and surefire way is to simply purge the ones with shitty ethics (I like how divergence almost always grants the polar opposite ethics, thanks Paradox) before they breed too much. If your empire's ethics don't allow purging, enact policies and ethics that reduce divergence. War dec and go for the Humiliation wargoal if you don't have the influence.

Divergence needs to be weeded out ASAP as you see them prop up. Happy population resource bonus is negligible, but unhappy population causes all sorts of troubles down the road.

Yeah, anon is right; chasing enemy fleets is a fool's errand. It's POSSIBLE, provided you do ridiculous micro like have a small interdictor fleet that can warp fast to pin them down while your lumbering main fleet catches up, but it's a much better idea to just play the "best defence is a good offence" game and completly ignore your own territory to just focus on smashing up theirs.

don't use crystal plating on fortresses. They have 8000hp already so armor is so much much much better on them already.
If you'd replace all that crystal armor with neutronium you could have 70%+ damage reduction and an effective hp of 25k or more.

>>
So Stellaris is inevitably going to be pumped full of content by DLC, until it has espionage, economics, superweapons, ground combat, and all the stuff that should have been in the game on release if Paradox's business model wasn't to release half-finished dross and then nickel-and-dime you for the other half.

BUT aside from all that necessary stuff, what kind of sci-fi bells and whistles would you hope for? Free-floating space habitats? Giant alternate tech branches? Plug-n-play cybernetic attachments for Pops? Counter-invade Unbidden Land? Anything?
>>
So what's the best way to expand as a xeno purging imperium? You lose control of systems when you purge their pops for some reason and early on, planets habitable by your race are few and far between. Do I really have to stick pops from my race on 40% habitable worlds or is there a more clever way of expanding?

You could have settled near that mountain and river to get bonuses both from them
>>
>>147795674
oh :c
what kind of bonuses
>>
>>147795745
Well, if you settle near mountains you get a bonus to defence, which may or may not be great depending on your difficulty. Second, you can get wonders on them but that doesn't really matter as you can get them with other cities anyway. The greatest thing is you can get observatory, which gives 50% science to the city, which is fucking huge. And that capital would have great growth, also has jungles in it which give additional science with university. That's also your capital, where you would build science national wonders like national library, etc. It literally would be science powerhouse

About rivers, IIRC rivers count as fresh water so the tiles adjacent to them have more food, greatly helps with growth. Units also get a penalty when attacking across rivers but that is, as also above defence bonus, may or may not be useful depending on your difficulty. Building near river also gives you a few buildings, like watermill which increases production and food, garden which increases great person generation(this would be great, as that's your capital you would be generating most GP power there, thanks to wonders and shit) and hydro plant which gives shitload of production

These are all stupid really, I'm glad Civ VI has a district system. In that if your city is one tile away from a river you won't lose all of the bonuses you would get, unlike Civ V

2000 year MTTH* for each empire with no jump drive technology (Jump Drive or Psi Jump Drive).
200 year MTTH* for each empire with one jump drive technology.
20 year MTTH* for each empire with both jump drive technologies.
20% less time if empire has completed Wanderlust event chain.

I assume colonization is different from already being there. You gonna need to set up foundation, air filtering, all from scratch.

Although inability to inherit vassal's tech is silly.
>>
>>147819402
I just would have thought the new species in my empire would be able to colonise their own type of planet. I understand that my own species wouldn't be able to do it. Just one more oddity to add to the list.
>>
>>147819604
I assume our sci-fi is a bit harder here, so you don't get to just colonize a planet for being the same type. You'll still need air filtration, site clearing, setting up biome-specific infrastructure.

Although really, tech shouldn't be bound to nations, it should be bound to planets. This is where infrastructure, institutes and corporations with know-how are.

Realistically, colonising any of the habitable planets in Stellaris would be trivial to an interstellar capable species, if you can live in space, you can live pretty much anywhere. Only planets where it rains molden lead or has atmospheric pressure that can crush steel should give them pause.

You'd expect much more extensive space habitats too.

And I don't and I think it's ugly for reasons other than being not realistic.
Why would you want caricatures for leaders anyway? You're supposed to be talking to the real person, not a caricature. Civ IV wasn't explicit caricatures, they tried to be somewhat realistic but the technology limited them. Stalin looks like a low-poly version of himself and Victoria looks like she does in paintings and photos later in life.

It's a matter of scale. A single pop is probably millions. Needing life support means you need to pay precious Jouls for every person.

I would like being able to build outposts on barren and such worlds.

I also definitely wish each planet would house more then one biome and type would define distribution pattern.

This, they should make it so each world had certain tiles where species that don't have that planet's preference could live with 80 % happiness, for example tundra worlds could have tiles for continental species to live near the equator (make them the center tiles).
>>
>>147834753
>I also definitely wish each planet would house more then one biome and type would define distribution pattern.

Problem with that is it nukes the whole "Different empires colonise asymmetrically at the start because of different planet types" thing, which I think is actually really good.

If there's an appropriate biome on every planet, everything's colonisable from 2200 almost.

From what I can tell, they really didn't for the most part. There are a few where I can't tell where they based the person off of (Catherine comes to mind she's just a qt sergeant there or something), and certainly not to the extent of Roosevelt, Ying Zheng, and Cleopatra. Victoria we can pretend is based on her younger years and simply suffers from the artstyle.

That's literally how it should be. Humans have lived in the desert for ages, in the barren tundra since prehistory, etc. There's no reason you can't colonize a cold world with 2200 technology, fuck we could probably do it now with enough energy supplies, just set up heated tunnels.

Had the same thing. Even it there was a checkmark my allied Empire always refused to go to war, if I got something worth even 1 point more than him.

He always declined a war in which I wanted a 21 pts system and gave him a 20 pts system. Although the green checkmark was there, he always refused. He accepted when I demanded a sub 20 pts system for myself.

Dont waste your resources early on by colonizing. Build up a strong military first and either purge or vassalize/tributary yourself a nice corner of the galaxy first.
Border expansion comes with occupied planets.
the occasional tributary will give you enough credits and minerals to maintain a decent fleet, research debris so u dont lag behind in tech
Peaceful expansion early on is literally impossible if you dont get lucky with space/benevolent neighbors.
Always play safe = military first

I've been thinking up designs for a dieselpunk/decopunk conversion mod for Civ V (with elements of early 20th century pulp fiction put into the mix), since its art deco theme always inspired me, but I have no art skills to put them into practice. Also Civ VI is coming out soon so I have no idea how many people will migrate over once its released.

You think I should try forging ahead with it anyway?
>>
>>147871514
I imagine wait for Civ VI, it's [supposed] to be much easier to mod.
>>
>>147871514
Well, I know some excellent fan/modder artists out there exist, but I don't know if this sort of project is worth it overall. I don't want to just copypaste graphics from elsewhere over everything and make contrasting styles either, that sort of stuff breaks immersion for me.
>>
>>147871514
do you have experience with civ 5 modding? because its apparently pretty damn difficult to do a conversion-style mod, while its going to be easier to make mods for civ 6 according to the directors. I would assume that if it has a good launch (which it probably will, looking at all of its features, it easily rivils civ 5+expansions already) most players will migrate over, as well as probably some civ 4 players because of the pseudo-stacking.
>>
>>147871790
I have experiences in modding Civ V, although I am well aware of the trials of trying to do conversion mods for the game, which is part of the reason I took my sweet time in getting it all together. Admittedly I was using the modern/atomic eras of Civ V as my starting base (remember, 1920s-1940s theme) and wanting to take those further, so conversion may or may not be the best term, but it's conversion enough.

(And before anyone asks, I'm trying to teach myself the proper art style for the project, but that's also a lot of the reason it never got off the ground in time. Never my forte.)

And yeah, both hearing about it being easier to mod Civ VI as well as all BNW features off the bat make me wonder if it's worth it in the long run. I know Civ IV had a longtime modding community but it was a whole different beast compared to V. I dunno. I'll wait and see how VI is, it's already July.
>>
Anyone else hyped for Arcen's 4X?
>>
>>147872673
>>147872673
Big secondary thing was if it should be a premade scenario or a kind of start-from-the-beginning thing like the Smoky Skies scenario, which while I like a lot is also by far the easiest scenario because of the way you just start in the open. Also the former allows better flowing events than a themed game, not that there's anything wrong with the latter, quite the opposite. (Also a corollary: a custom semi-random map script like the Scramble for Africa or Polynesia scenarios would be necessary.)

I'll stop before I go full autism but you can see why I waffled for so long. It's all possible but would take (has taken) forever.

I like how they fit that one revenge mission into Deserts of Kharak. It reminded me of the revenge focus the original Homeworld game had.

A fleet has destroyed your world. You are the first and last line of defense for the fragment of your people left alive and what do you do? You risk it all just to hunt down those sons of bitches and murder them.

Hiigarrans stumble on one of three hyper space cores (really nice FTL drives that give you a huge advantage over competitors). The Bentusi are peaceful cyborg traders integrated into their own ships and they have one of the other cores. The Hiigarans use the core for personal gain and the rest of the galaxy bans against them. With the hyperspace core the Hiigarans defeat the united galaxy. The rest of the galaxy demand the Bentusi stop the Hiigarans. The Bentusi agree.

The Hiigarans launch an attack on the Bentusi when the Bentusi come to claim the Hiigaran hyperspace core, but the Hiigarans get BTFO. The Taiidan, the other big empire in the galaxy who have been fighting with the Hiigarans for a long time take the reigns at this point as the Bentusi retreat from galactic affairs out of guilt. The Taiidan pretty much genocide the Hiigarans by demanding that every last one of them leave their homeworld and never use FTL ever again.

The Hiigarans leave in slower than light colony ships and travel for thousands of years looking for a new home. Most of the ships eventually fail. A few make it to Kharak, a desert world of borderline habitablity. Also, in secret, the Hiigarans smuggled the prized hyperspace core with them to Kharak.

The Hiigarans forget about their homeworld, Hiigara. A religion that worships the god Sajuuk develops and demands the people of Kharak never go into space, perhaps a mutated memory of the Taiidan demand they never use FTL. The Gaalsien are banished to the desert, where they secretly discover old tech from old colonies and colony ships that allows them to create a powerful military.

The deserts begin to encroach on the habitable northern regions (food and water riots ensue) as they send the first probes into space. They discover the wrecks of old space ships using the satellites and begin mounting missions to excavate the ships in hopes the technology might save their dying world.
>>
>>147882909
The original homeworld was incredibly difficult. The remastered version is far easier because it uses homeworld 2's engine and loses some of the difficulty enhancers like limited fuel on fighters and corvettes. Homeworld 2 is a walk in the park compared to 1. Deserts of Kharak is closer to 1's difficulty if you play on classic.

And it's space arabs.

Centuries ago, the Taiidan and Kushan were embroiled in a massive war. The Kushan escaped annihilation but were stranded on Kharak. Where the Taiidan allowed them to live under the agreement that they would not re-enter space.

As the centuries passed these agreements were forgotten or became religious dogma protected and enforced by the more extreme clans

Homeworld tells the story of the shit that went down after you went back into space. Deserts of Kharak is the story of how you got there. And Homeworld 2 is the story of bringing Sajuuk to bear.
>>
>>147883996
>limited fuel

>>147883970
Ha, so Desert of Kharak is a prequel to Homeworld.
>>
>>147884216
You don't have to play Homeworld 1, but at least play Homeworld 2. Everyone should bring sajuuk to bear at least once (three times).
>>
>>147884370
Dunno, I try it, it doesn't look like my kind of games.
>limited ressources that don't respawn
>units are fragile as fuck
I can't stand Command and Conquer for having exactly the same mechanism. And while I do like space games, I'm not sure Homeworld can qualify as a 4x. Even Haegemonia is more of a 4x than it.
>>
>>147883970
(continued)
The Gaalsien take these space probes as an affront to their god and begin a war of genocide on the North. Two clans of the North ban together to mount a daring mission to the "primary anomaly", This is where the game Deserts of Kharak begins.

In the wreck they discover the hyperdrive core and perhaps just as importantly the Guidestone, a map to their original Homeworld. Over the next 100 years the waring clans unite with an unprecedented sense of unity and shared fate. They build a massive mothership in space to take hundreds of thousands of their people to their ancient homeworld, Hiigara. This is where the original Homeworld game begins.

They conduct their first hyperspace jump to the edge of their system, but when they return they find Kharak burning, their entire people and civilization dying before their eyes, hundreds of millions dead. They learn of the ancient treaty they had forgotten and the Taiidan fleet that had wiped out their world.

With a little help from the Bentusi and revolts within the Taiidan empire due to the inhumanity of killing hundreds of millions of people, the Hiigarans not just find Hiigara, but kill the emperor that ordered the destruction of Kharak.

Everything operates on basic rock paper scissors principles so as long as you don't put rock against paper you won't lose.

Homeworld colonized the Homeworld galaxy. Civilizations rose and fell and the memories of the past were lost. Colony worlds became the homeworlds of these humans. So it seems. You see the ships of ever race more than you see any individuals, but yeah, every single instance of seeing individuals they are human, even the Bentusi. Which leads one to the conclusion that this is a galaxy that colonists from the Milky Way came to hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Homeworld was so fucking hard. Didn't you have a limited number of units (potentially) throughout the entire game? Like the units and resources you finish a stage with is what you start with in the next stage? So if you marginally beat a stage, ie lose a fair few ships, you are fucked in the next stage because you barely have a fleet.
>>
>>147886768
The difficulty came more in the fact that the missions were hard. Cheesing the fuck out of salvagers made it hilariously easier though.
>>
>>147886768
Actually if you lose most of your fleet in one mission then there will be fewer enemies in the next mission. It doesn't directly scale so yeah, it's tougher the next mission if you lose a lot of ships, but still, it's always doable no matter how badly you fuck up the previous mission.

Every Homeworld soundtrack is perfect.
My only complaint is that many of the songs in deserts of kharak aren't long enough.

Do you have the original torrent link you got it from? If you had that and began seeding it I could download it from you.

The fact that this game is inaccessible to anyone these days is criminal. I'd seed it endlessly if only I had it.

i dont know if this is a coincidence but ive noticed planets far from my home world have less happiness than the ones right next to it.

is this a feature? and what can i do to make them more happy that doesn't evolve dumping resources into propaganda broadcasts. i already have a teldar factory but i guess you can only build one despite me having like 3 resource nodes for it.

When I first was learning the game, I didn't know anything about wargoals. AI would attack and lose to my swarms of auto-generated garbage fits, then sign peace treaties almost immediately as these swarms (set to aggressive) sieged their planets. For the longest time I thought that I could just do things like in Civ2 - siege the city until it was in ruins. But no, Stellaris is just a banking investment simulator.

Rome, Germany, Greece, and France are definitely in while Spain, Russia, Japan, India, Egypt, China, America and England are confirmed
