is this thing comfortable to play with keyboard and mouse only?
>>
>>147567409

comfortable enough

scale of comfy:

xbox controller > keyboard > HOTAS

efficiency:

HOTAS > xbox controller > keyboard

lying down on the bed or slumped on the couch is comfy as fuck when you're just exploring or going from a to b

a wired 360 controller is dirt cheap nowadays anyway
>>
>>147567578
How is it not comfy with HOTAS?
I don't have one but just wondering, this game seems perfect to play with that and VR.
>>
>>147567578
cool, I have a xbox controller tho, the thing is that I see a lot of people commenting on how good it is with hotas, but I'm into stuff like that, also they are pretty expensive in my country
>>
>>147567913
HOTAS is pretty much a necessity if you're playing with VR, but as a long time user of M+KB, HOTAS is just a meme controller otherwise

>hotas is a meme
KB+M cannot compare ergonomically, which typically ends up being the deciding factor in a control interface rather than interface accuracy.
>>
>>147567913
>How is it not comfy with HOTAS?

sittting upright close to your desk grabbing a penis with one hand and fiddling with knobs and levers with your other hand

would be better with VR, but eh. we might have different definitions of comfy. i guess you're more on the "comfy immersion" page and i'm more on the "comfy position/seating" page

>>147568203

like i mentioned, a HOTAS will be more effective than an xbox controller once you master it. much more effective, even. still, the controller does its job, and you can map a surprising amount of ship functions to it just using single button presses. if you're willing to go for combination presses you won't need your keyboard at all.
>>
>>147569736

It's on the Science Channel and is about the Juno probe that got to Jupiter today.
>>
>>147569904
Idk man, I can reach all my keybinds just fine. Plus, the mouse is more accurate for fixed weapons. HOTAS is cool for muh immersion, but, having played both ways, it's definitely not better, just different, and a lot more expensive

I think a lot of people buy stuff like flight or space sims and equipment like HOTAS without even knowing whether or not they'll like the game, or if they do, play it often enough to justify spending time setting up their gear.

>>
>>147579168
That is the biggest question. If they would stop putting out shitty, half-assed, grindy bullshit and focus instead on making this a great MMO, this game could be 'uge. Instead we get a new layer of grind on top of the old grind, forcing you into specific, unfun aspects of gameplay.

I'm turning off my life support until we get AT LEAST player group support.

Is there a way to transfer spacebux between players? For example, how do dads put bounties on commandos? Do they pay in virtual dadbux? Do they say "We're both dads, we're on the same boat. Fly safe, dadmando o7" and that's it?

>>
>>147589008
What's more relaxing? In your opinion, I mean, I could really use some help.
Don't say Subnautica
>>
>>147589404
Personally, I think any of the 4X games popular right now is really nice for unwinding after work. Even conflict unfolds at your pace instead of the "oh shit" moments that you experience in ED.

If strategy is not your thing, I'd try something a little more hokey like Stardew Valley. Farming (literally), exploring, socializing with the town. Even get married, but without the perils of real women.
>>
>>147590209
Not him but i don't like strategy that much for space sims, and i personally hate Stardew Valley, i'd rather just open up Space Engine or keep playing Elite or Arma or WF.
>>
>>147590891
I don't think shooters are all that relaxing but to each their own. Especially when you mix in multiplayer and the pubies who just learned to swear.
>>
>>147589404

I find EVE trade/industry to be strangely relaxing and comfy, but that's just me. I don't know why, but I find it relaxing to be part of the cog in the machine and know that I'm helping supply other players with shit they need. It's so nice to sit with a cup of coffee and calmly do some research on the market to see what I should trade next or what blueprints I should produce and research.
>>
>>147590209
Ooh I haven't played a strategy game in a coon's age, that sounds like a good idea, thanks.

ED kind of grinds my gears because it doesn't have the social aspect that I always wished Elite/Oolite had, and it could and I thought was supposed to.

>>147590891
Yeah I saw that game on the sale but didn't click on it ever, the hokey art style really turned me off. If WF = grindfarm stay fast bro

>>147591156
Have to agree with you on this one, unless it's a private/friends only instance/server kind of thing. I've had some really relaxing times with /gtag/ for instance.

>>147591547
That sounds perfect but I'd be going in knowing nothing about the game/economy. EVE is something I've always been interested in but never gave a chance, for various reasons.
>>
>>147592174
I would stay away from EVE unless you have a massive amount of time to invest in it. It's pretty much a second job.
>>
>>147592390
Yeah, that is a concern. I do have four days free a week, but have come to the realization that I don't want anything that feels like a second job. Black Desert is a great example of that, beautiful game but I barely played it 8 weeks before giving up.
>>
>>147592174

>That sounds perfect but I'd be going in knowing nothing about the game/economy

You don't really need any knowledge going in, you can learn all you need, but a basic/intermediate understanding of economics is a plus. I didn't know jack shit about anything going in, I just knew that trading sounded neat, and I've actually learned quite a bit about economics just by playing EVE and researching related topics whenever I had some free time and felt like doing some reading.

As this anon >>147592390 said though, EVE is a hard game to play unless you have a fuckton of time to put into it. I have a full time job and play it, but it is practically the only game I play any more, but it's got me hooked and I've been playing it pretty religiously for some time now. I have actually fiddled with it and played Elite with EVE running in the background, alt tabbing between the two to check my market orders on EVE, and it worked great.
>>
>>147592992
The main thing that keeps me away from it is the sub fee, I know I'd never truly relax because I'd be obsessed with "getting my money's worth"
Economics has always been an interest though, playing the market is usually my end game in online games.
>>
>>147593636

I can understand that. I personally feel like I do, I enjoy my time playing the game. Also, you can pay with your sub with PLEX that you can buy with ingame money, which you can easily do once you get into trading. If you're looking for economic gameplay, I really don't think there's a game that can beat EVE, and if there is I'd love to know.

>>
>>147625761
Yeah that's fucking stupid. Everything in this game is shallow and repetitive, but Exploration is the worst offender by far. I'm only Pathfinder in it, and that's just from random scans of systems as I traveled around the bubble and "discovering" elements on planet surfaces.

Luckily I already had a grade 5 class 7 FSD from my Corvette, so I just stuck that into a Conda and immediately had ~50ly jump range. I just picked a random direction and jumped until I had gone over 5k. Whole thing took a few hours at most.

If you leave roll bound to your mouse you're an idiot, and FD are idiots for making it the default. The only thing kb+m doesn't do as well as hotas is FA-off, and if FD gave us a toggle for relative mouse axis it would lose that disadvantage.

I like roll on mouse. Pitch and roll are the two primary vectors of motion, so it makes sense to me to have them both in a place where you have fine-grained control.

Yaw is important for only two things:
>Putting some English on your turns, in which you would just be holding it down anyway
>Fine-tuning your aim, which can easily be achieved by fluttering the yaw keys

I've played with it set up as default for so long that when I've tried swapping them around, the game felt goofy and unplayable. I'm sure I could get used to it the other way, but I'm already really good at playing this way, so I just don't see the point.

What's a good way to get money ?
I don't really like the trading system, and prefer doing bounties, occasionally I do a mission or two.
And does the system matter or is it the same everywhere ?
>>
>>147629746
There's a couple good ways. You can do it the "honest" way, by running missions, regular trading, grinding combat in RES/CZ, etc.

If you do it this way, then it does matter which system you're in. The more allied you are with the minor factions in a system, the better paying the missions they provide. Also, the state of the system is important. For instance, a system at war will have CZs and missions to fight in them, while a system in Boom will have a higher volume of trade ships and trade missions.

>or

You can do it the easy way, by flying out to Sothis, grinding rep with the local factions by taking data delivery missions to nearby Ceos until you're at least friendly with everyone, and then spamming the multi-million credit delivery missions back to the bubble over and over until you have more credits than you know what to do with.

You can also exploit Powerplay. Join one of the powers that expands with combat, and go afk turret in their expansion CZs. There's a bug right now where the enemies in PP expansion CZs don't fight back, so you can literally just park your ship there with all turrets set to fire at will, then come back in a few hours and turn in your pile of merits for an EZ 50 million credits.

Well, good on you for soldiering on with that shitty scheme. Pitch and yaw is much more intuitive when bound to the mouse than pitch and roll, and fluttering yaw keys can only ever be inferior for fine tuning aim.

I'm genuinely intrigued why I keep playing this piece of shit slot machine.
I love it.
>>
>>147632570
See, I've been playing with it this way for so long that any other way has become less intuitive. With pitch/roll on the mouse, you almost never need to tune your aim anyway, and just a tap on yaw is usually more than enough if you need to adjust. I used to PvP a lot when Lave was the place to be, and I was very, very good.

What's the pixelization of distant ships/stations like? I had a dk2 and that was amazing but the legibility of the text etc was too much for me.
>>
>>147634943
The pixels are still visible. Not as prominently as before, but if you pay attention you notice it. All text, however, is readable. The quality is high enough that you forget the flaws.

And everything except the galaxy map works fine with VR. For that you want to have proper binds in your controls.

I wholeheartedly recommend it, I've always longed for the feeling that I now get with the Rift. It actually feels like you are in your cockpit. Overall the Rift headphones are also a decent piece of kit if you don't have special headphones or are using the speakers.

Elite is not EVE. If you want to play EVE, play EVE. Asking for basic multiplayer tools is nothing more than millenial entitlement, even though it would have literally no impact on my ability to play 2 hours a week in solo. The game is perfect exactly the way it is. We just have to trust in Braben's vision for the game.

Holy shit I thought I was the only autist here playing it.

It's a pretty nice game especially since it's one dude doing most of the job. It's not as big and nice looking as ED and the scale is clearly no 1:1 but the game is pretty comfy overall and the physics are awesome once you get used to it.
Also the dev is is kind of a bro, listening to the community and keeping adding stuff regularly.

>it looks like a more fleshed out E:D in terms of gameplay.
Well it's still a pretty shallow game (but I guess every sandbox space sim is shallow to a certain extent), but it's way, way less grindy and the possibility to script quests+private servers are a good plus.

Here, have a pic of glitched Pearl I encountered while coming back from a hopeless hidden planet search.

>I'm thinking of picking it up.
Too bad it was 30% off until a few days ago. But it's still worth the full $25 if you are autistic enough about this kind of games.

>How's the multiplayer? Is there enough of an active community to make it worthwhile?
No unfortunately, if you know people on ED you'll have a better chance there.
MP is more or less dead from what I know (and I don't really care since I mostly play alone). There are groups of people playing regularly at given times, but you won't be able to pop anytime and find people logged in.

The saves carry from solo to multiplayer and vice-versa though, the only things that won't carry are shit you store in stations/cities.

tl;dr: If you don't like solo and are looking for active multiplayer don't waste your bucks.

There are hangars in station cities and you can store ships/weapons/materials/whatever fits in your inventory inside.

Since these can be built, destroyed and are either relative to your savefile (solo) or the server (multiplayer), stored items can't be carried.

You can sell exploration data to some engineers to grain rank, but for most you need to craft lower level modules to unlock higher level ones. Craft a few grade 1 modules to unlock grade 2, a few grade 2 to unlock 3 etc. (however once you're at grade 4 then crafting grade 1 upgrades only nets 1-2% progress towards the next so at that point either craft the highest grade mods you can or sell exploration data if you want to unlock 5 asap).

Elite Dangerous is probably the weirdest community I've ever seen.
I dont think I've seen a community that was as self-destructive as this one. I bet there will be studies on it when the game dies like there was with Biodrones.

Between the dads that declare the game to be perfect no matter what (it's so odd seeing 45 year old guys doing that, usually teenagers do that shit) and the griefers that run around killing players then genuinely wonder why no one wants to be around them, and the developers that openly endorse the two - I dont know how it lasted this long.

This game has manged to keep a perfect balance of new players coming in and leaving that it looks alive enough when you look at the community hub.
It's also managed to prevent people from refunding it because of the youtube tutorials that take 2 hours to watch.

All of the mistakes in this game cancel each other out somehow. A good update to the game could make it GOTY and a shitty update can kill it dead.
Which is why this general is here. We're watching FD play Jenga and wondering when the tower is gonna fall.
>>
>>147694393
There will be an X4 eventually, and it'll be out before Elite is ever good.
>>
>>147694393
It's actually half decent with all the patches. The highway system is better than elite's FSD.
>>
>>147694503
It's because the dads want the game to be nothing more than Elite. So as far as they're concerned the game is perfect. It doesn't even occur to them that the game can be improved without affecting their enjoyment in the least.
>>
>>147694503
2.1 was a massive blow to the game, it drove away a ton of dads with the new AI, as well as essentially the entire organized PvP community with the artificial grind-wall that is Engineers. The only reason the player numbers are staying relatively stable is the steam sale.

I think we'll see a season 3, but unless there's something really amazing in the next few patches or early on in season 3, I'd be surprised if we saw a season 4. FDev is just too hilariously incompetent to keep it together much longer. It's just been one shitty, buggy update after the next.
>>
>>147694803

Someone needs to see of they can get Elite running on VirtualBox or something and then post it on the forums every time a dad tries to tell people what features this game does and doesnt need.

>actually, THIS is the game YOURE looking for
>>
>>147694503

Can't be fixed at this point. It just needed to be a different game.

Should have been a single player game with some X3 elements and possibly co-op.

Multiplayer ruins everything.
>>
>>147695198
They tried to make it this weird hybrid of single and multiplayer, and ended with a steaming pile of shit for both sides. They needed to focus the game on one or the other, imo.
>>
>>147695275

Yup. My hope is that either they really release the server info when the game dies and the community makes it great again with mods. That or No Man's Sky is good. Or X4 is actually not shit. Or there is an iWar 3 that is not shit... God damn it, I'm going to die with space sim blue balls.

>>147695187

too bad FD nerfed the AI. all they had to do was fix the spawn rates and remove the engi weapons from them.

But what makes Elite so compelling isn’t so much about the game as the experience. It’s the tinkering with and the taking out of a performance car for a Sunday drive, not to rack up more miles, nor to break any speed limits, but to just feel the growl of the engine and the wind comb through what’s left of your hair. To remember those carefree days arched over a BBC Micro or blinking angrily into a Lenslok and to forget for a short while that you have to make 357 people redundant in the morning. Elite is a hermetically-sealed escape capsule and it’s the best there is. Hell, you could fire the game up and just sit there on a launch pad and the sounds are enough to carry you away, so strong is your ship’s presence and so absorbing are the station surroundings.

Taking off, tearing through the station entrance a little too fast and just missing a Python, angling for the next jump, scooping fuel from a blazing sun, spinning the camera around your ship to catch its best profile, starting a fight just for the hell of it, seeing smok rise from the command console, hearing the screen crack and precious oxygen escaping into space and landing back at base with seconds to spare – these are the moments that make Elite essential. Trading, missions, mining – not so much. But it’s ok, we’re not going anywhere.

Don't forget the no-fun-allowed police that will rush in murdering you if you take too much ressources or simply defend yourself against an agressive creature. :^)
>>
What the fuck, am i the only one experiencing this?

I had 10,000 merits
Week passes and i have 5,000
Second week passes and now i have 1,250

It literally says i've been pledged for 2 weeks

Has anyone else been merit visioned?
>>
>>147701773
Merits degrade by 50% every week anon. That's one of the """"""""""""Features""""""""""""" of powerplay
>>
>>147700178
It says something about how devoid of fun a game is when taking off and landing are literally the most fun portions of gameplay.
>>
>>147701981
Ultra dank
>>
>>147701773
>>147701981

And no matter how many merits you have now, in 4 weeks they completely disappear.
>>
>>147700230
wait, for real?

explain
>>
>>147703352
There is nothing to explain, the devs stated multiple times there would be some kind of galactic police that would come after you if commit crimes. They also said crimes included taking too much ressources or using violence against a creature even if it's trying to kill you.
>>
>>147703352
The planets have ancient guardian droids that will attack you if you kill harmless creatures or destroy the land with the terraforming gun or just take too much shit.

He's overstating the danger as long as you're not completely retarded though. And you can disable them by hacking bases.
>>
>>147703352
See >>147703650

Based on the developer's videos that I watched a weird warthog animal attacked the player. He decided to shoot it and instantly got a 'Wanted Star' on the upper right hand corner and a drone came within 15 seconds and started to shoot the player. Then he killed the drone and 5 more appeared. Then a gigantic walking droid came from somewhere and they completely slaughtered the player. Obviously it was all fun and the audience as well as the developer playing it were laughing for the 'bad decision'.

I suspect you can lose the droids by just flying to a different planet, which there are too many to even care about.
But yeah, I can see that the mysterious ancient defence forces can get on your nerves quite quickly.

>>147703567
I think galactic police is different to the planetary defence thing, but if not then it will be a real annoyance if they hunt you until you're dead.
>>
>>147703958
The galactic police force is probably more in line with if you attack transports and stations in your ship.
>>
>>147703650
>>147703958
>>147704039
>player gets slaughtered by an instant overpowered response after he tried to defend against an immediate life-threatening menace
>audiance laughs and approves
It's not only ED, it's like everybody wants that the sheer notion of having fun in a video game must disappear completely.
>>
>>147705234
I watched that video too, the guy wasn't even paying attention or just did it to demonstrate how you can get fucked if you're completely retarded. Literally won't be a problem for the non lobotomized players.
>>
>>147705656
>Literally won't be a problem for the non lobotomized players.

No elite-dads in the game then. Sounds good.
>>
If i recall correctly the dev also had a "vision". He wanted the player to explore and " enlighten" himself, and seemed very bothered when the ign press player started shootan everything.

>there's no escape

Dropped
>>
>>147706182
>>147706202
It won't be. They've specified the release date and the game is 'ready'.
>>
>>147706425
Same as elite then :^)
>>
>>147706432
>It won't be. They've specified the release date and the game is 'ready'.
Yeah, they also said that earlier this year during spring.
>>
>>147706445
>memes
At least I can gank noobs in Eravate. The only """multiplayer""" component in NMS is naming procgen creatures.
>>
>>147706425
It has both offline and online.
The online mode just has the twist that you cannot explore with friends or play with friends. You can only encounter random players, by chance.
>>
>>147705968
The thing is I don't have a problem with the NMS vision because it's supposed to be a single player space minecraft with ships.
I have a problem with the elite VISION because they shilled the game as a massive multiplayer space MMO where you can BE ANYTHING, just to have the fun bits visioned out by the dads and Ftroop's incompetence.
>>
>>147706579
>You can only encounter random players, by chance.
Source? I remember reading an interview where the developper said that you could see the name of the player who discovered a planet first but that would be it.
>>
>>147706614
>space minecraft
It's casual Subnautica Lite with no building mechanics.
>>
>>147706643
I thought it was in the same video with the drones and murdering that he mentions that you can encounter other players as well as NPCs.

Oh well. Not getting the game anyways.
>>
>>147706643
>>147706579
>You can only encounter random players, by chance
Nope you can't. They clearly said the unique online stuff is when you find a new planet or species, you'll be able to name it and people around the world that will see it will see the name you gave to it.
>>
is elite dangerous good?

I played the living shit out of frontier and first encounters back in the day

How much did braben casualize this? You cant manually land on planets right?
>>
>>147706643
I've seen both.
In one interview they said friends can try to find each other, or people can blunder across one another but the scale is just so big the odds of it happening are super slim.
In another they didn't touch on that point but discussed the types of universe changes that are broadcast globally.

The exact question will players be able to see each other in the game if they blunder across each other has recently been not directly asked.
>>
>>147706724
>is elite dangerous good?
During the honeymoon phase yes, then not anymore unless you're a dad who hates fun.
>>
>>147706724
You'll love it if you liked the previous Elites. You can land on planets without atmospheres so essentially big orbiting rocks and icebergs. It's still somewhat cool, though.

I really enjoy the game despite the blatant flaws and ftroop's incompetence.
>>147706860
I'm one of those.

>>147706779
If they are trying to 'hide' something that everyone seems to be asking for it would hint that you cannot see each other.
>>
>>147706724
Hilariously, ED still has less features than FE, and some of the features that came out of the box in FE(planets) are sold as a separate DLC in ED.

On the other hand, if you are boring enough cunt to find FE good then you'll definitely will like ED.
>>
>>147706724
>is elite dangerous good?
HAHAHAHA
>how much did braben casualize this?
It's not about casualizing it, it's about braben caving to the dads on every account preventing qualitative gameplay enhancements from being added, and sandro adding strictly anti-fun grindy gameplay that even korean grinders would even find too extreme.

>You cant manually land on planets right?
You can but it's a multi stage process. landing on anything is easy as fuck though.
