Both Baudouin and Eirene had their birthdays in early January. Before her death, they usually celebrated them together. Yet now January merely passed in a haze, one filled with books and little Ildegarde, who still did not fully understand that her mother was not returning to her. The little girl oft looked out the windows of the palace, gazing at the road leading to its base for a sign of a noble woman--her mother, no doubt--approaching. Baudouin continually attempted to explain that she would not see her mother again on this Earth, but the little eight-year-old could not--or would not--understand. Baudouin did not blame her overmuch. He wished he, too, could hide from the truth.

He had changed in the months since Eirene's death. He had stopped taking care of himself as rigorously as he had in the past, for one; his hair and beard, previously perfectly trimmed, was now left long and unkempt, and he now sometimes drank himself to inebriation. He had never been drunk before in his life, yet since Eirene's death he had gotten drunk thrice. He beat himself up over falling to pieces almost as much as he beat himself up for pressing Eirene for another child. Her death was his fault, he never doubted it.

Yet he saw her each night, as he had swore to her he always would, and remembered his promise to her: to love and care for their son, Aubry, as if he were her. He could not fall apart, could not be anything but strong, if he were to raise their son. And so he grieved in his own way, a slow, long grief which would eat at him until he, too, died. Then, and only then, could he see his beloved, and finally forget the pain he felt.

Yet, in the interim, he still had responsibilities. The management of the Kingdom he largely let slip, but in caring for his children, especially Aubry, he never wavered in the slightest. From the youngest possible age Aubry was raised with the full knowledge that he was to be King.

Damn the House of Lusignan to hell thrice over! None other than Baudouin's half-brother, Amaury de Lusignan, was discovered by Duc Boudewijn to be plotting against the life of his youngest daughter, Ildegard! In a mad fury, Baudouin ordered Amaury captured and brought before him.

"DID YOU BELIEVE YOU COULD HIDE YOUR ACTIONS FROM ME, BROTHER?" Baudouin raged at him as he knelt at his feet. "DID YOU BELIEVE YOU COULD STEAL FROM ME THE LIFE THAT WAS GIVEN TO ME BY SHE WHO I BELOVED MOST?"

Amaury was silent, and for a long time Baudouin, too, stood quietly. When he began again his voice was calm, but held within it was a cold fury all the more terrible than his screams. "Your father evaded justice once when he should not have; you will not find the same mercy. You will be removed to the dungeons, where you will be tortured, starved, dehydrated and beaten. Every day you will wish for death, but it will be long in coming, Amaury de Lusignan, I shall make sure of that. Such a price is the only recompense from attempting something so base as you have."

"Brother, I--"

"CALL ME BROTHER AGAIN," Baudouin screamed as he stood, spittle flying from his lips, "AND I WILL BEHEAD YOU HERE, MYSELF, BEFORE THIS THRONE!"

Amaury knelt, stunned, as Baudouin once again struggled to regain control of himself. Eventually, with an errant gesture, he signaled for Amaury to be removed to the dungeons, for the beginning of his torture. The young man went in silence, and was never seen in the outside world again.

A short while after his imprisonment Baudouin's mother Sibylla arrived to beg for a reduction in the sentence of her only other son, but Baudouin refused flatly. "Your husband should have burned for his plots against me long ago. I am sorry it is your son, sorry it is my brother, who must now suffer in his stead, but he is as rotten as his father. He threatened my family. He must, and will, die."

After the aborted plot on Ildegarde's life, several years passed with few changes in the Kingdom. Sibylla (the Queen Mother) stayed far away from the royal palace and remained chilly to her son over his cruel treatment to his half-brother, whereas Sibylla (the daughter) returned from her long stay with... some northern baron under whom she was tutored, but little else about the daily events of the palace shifted. Baudouin was happy to have all that remained of his family present with him once again, but nothing, not even his children, could ever fill the void that the loss of Eirene had created within him. If he was less distant with his offspring around him, it did not mean that he was once again the same man he was before her death.

Finally, in the summer of 1221, an event took place which forced Baudouin out of his melancholy routine: Pope Sergius V, upon hearing of the weakness of the Ayyubid Sultanate due to a conflict with the powerful Nubian tribes to the south, called for a Crusade to seize the heart of Aegyptus from them. All Christian lords were called upon to participate and, as usual, remission of sins was offered for those who did.

Baudouin had never forgiven himself for the death of Eirene, and remained certain to that day that he had somehow been its cause. Perhaps he had sinned, and her death was his punishment; perhaps it was punishment because he pushed her too hard. The particulars did not matter. All that mattered to Baudouin was his certainty that his wife's death could be lain at his feet.

Then came the Crusade. It offered not only an opportunity to grant something of permanence to his children, but also the remission of whatever sins he had committed that saw his wife dead, and the assurance that he would see her once again in heaven, whatever his crime had been.

Baudouin could not refuse such an opportunity. He pledged his loyalty to the cause of the Pope the same day he received word of the Crusade.

Unfortunately for Christendom--and particularly unfortunately for Baudouin--the Sultan of Egypt was able to call upon more than just his own troops; he also had access to the soldiers of the Turkish Sultan of Rum, 12,000 well-trained and exceptionally-drilled men, with an overwhelming number of horse archers which Christian forces had always struggled to adequately counter. Worse still, these forces were marching through Jerusalem on their way to Egypt, and it was left to Baudouin to stop them.

Thankfully, Baudouin's treasury was overflowing with gold, and, in addition to receiving the support of holy orders, he was able to call upon a mercenary company of Turkish horse archers to counter those of the Sultan. Over a month of hard-fought skirmishes and pitched battles, Jerusalem's new chief commander, none other than Comte Alchamil, was able to crush the Turkish forces in St-Abraham, force them to retreat into Ascalon, and break them there in their entirety.

Now, however, comes an entirely different test: Ayyubid forces now march across the Sinai en route to Darom. Furious with their Ayyubid brother for turning his back on them and leading Christian armies, they hope to break the back of the Jerusalemite endeavor here, and to string up Alchamil by his neck.

For the Mohammedan, it was a dream not to be. Dug in at Darom and still receiving support from multiple holy orders and his mercenary horse archer company, the Ayyubids could not hope to break Baudouin's lines at Darom. The way into the heart of Aegyptus is now open, and is already being flooded by zealous Crusaders, chief among them Geoffrey II Plantagenet of Somerset, who is the greatest lord, aside from Baudoin, to pledge himself to the Crusade.

In mid-March, Baudouin's forces reach the delta of the Nile river in an area the local refer to as Ushmun Tannah. "I have set out on Crusade," Baudouin proclaimed solemnly as his forces began to invest the local fortress, "and in so doing I have purged myself of my sins. God above, hear my prayer: keep me on this earth only for as long as I must remain! Let me see my son grow into a man, then take me from this hellish place and return me to the arms of my wife in paradise above! Amen."

On the 28th of June 1222, the Sultan's palace at Damanhur was successfully breached. His family was absent, but the symbolic victory was all that was necessary to proclaim the Crusade successful. With Rumite forces shattered and Ayyubid forces divided along three theaters, the war is, for all intents and purposes, over. All that remains is to divide the realm.

Initially Geoffrey Plantagenet attempts to assert his claim to the Kingdom, arguing that he was the one to seize the palace at Damanhur and that he is the only major lord involved in the Crusade who lacks a Kingdom. Yet, although Geoffrey is a pious lord, his piety pales in comparison to that of Baudouin V, whose name is known as a synonym for a good Christian throughout Europe. The Pope sides firmly in his favor, pointing out especially the money that Baudouin paid from his own coffers to raise mercenaries for the fighting, and his single-handed defeats of the two main Mohammedan forces, which otherwise would have crushed Geoffrey's own troops. Pope Sergius V, therefore, hands over the Kingdom to Baudouin, and the very next day he is crowned Baudouin I of Misr (the official documents of the realm did not change the Kingdom's title from the local Arabic to the proper Latinized Aegyptus for several months) in Cairo.

Geoffrey is at the verge of leaving Egypt feeling cheated, but at the last moment Baudouin reveals to Geoffrey that he does not intend to keep the Kingdom for himself. "I am merely its steward," Baudouin assures him, "waiting for an opportunity to present it to one I hold most dear. I know that such a thing does not console you from the loss of the realm, but take solace in that fact that I, too, will not profit from these lands."

Although he is indeed not consoled overmuch, Geoffrey nevertheless appreciates Baudouin attempting to mend things between them before he leaves. The young Plantagenet lord sails back to Somerset empty-handed, but with a slightly lighter heart.

Baudouin was not lying to Geoffrey when he told him the Kingdom of Aegyptus was meant for another; in truth, he meant it for his eldest daughter, Sibylla.

When he had last seen Sibylla before Eirene had died, the young girl was willful and headstrong, and her mental illness had been debilitating. Her moods swung violently and without any warning; she could easily change from a smiling, perfect little girl to a furious lioness within minutes. When Baudouin sent her away to be tutored in the diplomatic arts, he and Eirene both had considered it a dim last chance for the girl to regain control of herself.

Yet when she returned to Jerusalem following the death of her mother, Baudouin was astounded by the change that had overcome her. Her moods still swung, undoubtedly, but far less violently than before, and when they did she was better at controlling it. She was a kind, humble woman who had formed fast friends with almost everyone in the north of the realm, and not merely because she was the daughter of the King. Baudouin spied within her a new nobility which he had not seen before.

When the Crusade was called, he went merely with an eye to absolving himself of its sins... yet when it concluded successfully, he began to think on Sibylla, how she was his designated heir for well over a decade, and what she had left now with the birth of Aubrey. She had in her the same quiet dignity of her father, yet also the fiery spirit of her mother, something which Baudouin could never deny.

While she was still being tutored she had traveled to Italy to meet her extended family for a brief time, and in the process had come across a distant relative, Pagano Aleramici, who she had become quite close with. Before the Crusade had even ended Baudouin politely requested that Pagano come to Jerusalem to accept her hand. At first Pagano politely declined, but when Baudouin clarified the stakes of the marriage, Pagano rushed to Jerusalem to be joined to his young relative.

>Giving a crusader state to a woman
>>
>>147553592
The marriage with Pagano, although Baudouin did not necessarily disapprove of it, was nevertheless a step made mandatory only because granting Sibylla direct control of the Kingdom on her own, as a woman, was not feasible. Although Baudouin wished it were not so, she required a man to rule beside her--yet, by choosing Pagano, who was not only her friend but the lowly son of a Bishop, Baudouin knew that he could effectively raise Sibylla as a co-ruler of the Kingdom. Her far more noble blood, coupled with her diplomatic nature and friendly disposition, would give her all the bearing she needed to rule as Sibylla I alongside her new husband, Pagano I.

Therefore, on July 4th, 1222, while Pagano was still en route to Jerusalem for the marriage, Baudouin had them preemptively proclaimed co-rulers of the realm of Aegyptus. Pagano I and Sibylla I date their reign from this proclamation of the first King of Aegyptus, Baudouin I, the King who ruled only one week.

As if his reputation as a pious lord required any more bolstering, his willing parting with the Kingdom of Aegyptus to a distant relative (for that is how the courts of Europe saw it, not as a sly bequeathment to his daughter), and a lowly one at that, was almost too much. For his victory in the Crusade and his utter humility in its aftermath, Baudouin V gained the epithet "the Apostle" for all time.

Elsewhere in the world, the heir of the Byzantine Basileus, Prince Photios, has inherited the realm of Sicily from his deceased mother (and Basileius Timotheos's first wife), Queen Lesceline de Hauteville. From his mother's death the young Photios has been tutored by his maternal grandmother, the Princess Joan Plantagenet of England, and has absorbed much from her. Indeed, in addition to converting to Catholicism, young Photios has even taken to behaving like his grandmother, who was raised in the far northern marches of England. More plainly, Photios has the manners of a Scottish tribesman.

How the succession in the Empire will pan out is questionable at best. Were Timotheos to die at present, he has four sons to succeed him: young Photios, who is ten years old and controls a Kingdom, yet would most likely unite the entirety of the Basileia Rhomaion against his succession; five-year-old Helias, who is the Duc de Sicilia and has "proper" Greek manners and still follows Orthodoxy, yet is a vassal to his brother Photios; and two young sons, babies Georgios and Ignatios, who are still in the palace of Timotheos. It is likely the situation will change significantly before Timotheos dies, considering the Basileius is only just over thirty, but with his primary unlikely to convert from Catholicism, it appears the succession will be violent no matter how the situation changes.

Why is it playing a semi-historical approach impossible in HoI IV? Either one of the Axis blows up world tension or, by the time you research the necessary national focus for say conquering through the Benelux, everything gets clogged down by 5000 enemy aircraft and a sudden stream of divisions from elsewhere in the first three days of fighting. Cheesing the system by fabricating claims outside the national focus trees are far more beneficial by comparison.

A few short years after the conclusion of the Fourth Crusade, and mere months after the birth of Pagano and Sibylla's daughter and (current) heir Almodis, Pagano requests Jerusalemite support for a push on the last Ayyubid stronghold in southern Egypt, at Aswan. Baudouin, overjoyed at the birth of his granddaughter and eager to see her, happily agrees to send forces to support Pagano's attack. He knows he can use the war as an excuse to stop in Cairo and spend some time with his daughter and granddaughter.

Shortly after leaving Cairo, on the march south along the Nile, Baudouin catches a fierce illness. The King fights for his life for almost two full weeks before finally pulling through, but it has left him terribly weak, so weak that most of the camp doctors do not believe he will ever fully recover the vigor he had previously. At forty-eight years old, Baudouin knows that, finally, death is approaching; he has taken the first steps toward seeing his love again.

Although reluctantly, Baudouin acknowledges that he cannot continue on the march with his men following his illness, and instead sets back to Cairo to rest with Sibylla.

"God," he rasps one night in his tent, long after sleep had taken his small retinue, "I know you have sent this illness not out of hatred, but out of love. I ask only that you allow me to hold on a little longer, Lord. Please do not have me leave my son as my father left me. Let me see Aubry grow, as I promised my wife, before I go. Please, Lord. Amen."

Not long after Baudouin's return to Jerusalem from Cairo, his spymaster, Duc Almuzzam of Antioch, reluctantly reported to him that he had the gravest of news: he possessed clear evidence that Bauouin's middle child, Ildegard, had intents on young Aubry's life.

Baudouin burst into her chambers, screaming at the top of his lungs, "YOU WHORE! YOU DAUGHTER OF SATAN, YOU WOULD KILL YOUR OWN BROTHER?! YOU WOULD DISHONOR YOUR MOTHER SO?!"

"Only because you leave me nothing!" she screamed back, hardly even taken aback by his discovery. "I was once to be a Duchessa, and what do I have now!? Sibylla has a Kingdom! Aubry will have his own! What am I left with, father? No husband, no lands of my own; you have made a beggar of me, all for the same little fuck who killed mother!"

"You are lucky you are my own daughter," Baudouin answered, rasping now, "or I would have you tortured as I had your half-uncle. Do not doubt it. You will be imprisoned for four years, after which time you will be sent to a nunnery. You desire power so? You will spend your life permanently divested from it. And do not let me see you, ever again."

"You would do this to me? To your own daughter!?" Ildegarde screeched as guards stormed into her room and grabbed her. "Now it is you who dishonor mot--"

The slim girl reeled back as Baudouin punched her with all his might. He was old now, and weak, but Ildegarde was light, and she tumbled to the ground, stunned, at his strike. He had never hit her before in his life. "Eight years in the dungeon," he amended, before leaving a sobbing Ildegarde alone, to the mercy of the guards.

Not long after Aubry turns twelve, Baudouin V orders his last independent act when he requests his vassals to be present at an introductory banquet with their future King. The banquet was not only the last time the vassals of the realm would see their King in control of his own body, but the last time Aubry, too, would see him as a man tall and proud.

"Son," Baudouin told him that night, "you're away from Jerusalem often, and I know we do not see each other so often as either of us would like. I know that you also know I'm ill, and that I may die before you're ready to take the throne."

"Father," Aubry began, "you won--"

"No," Baudouin interrupted him, "don't assume, son, that I will live forever. I thought the same of your mother, and she was taken from me far too young. I made many mistakes, and lost a great deal of time I could have spent with her. You must learn now that a man can die at any time, whether it is the right time or not; God works in ways of mystery. And I have never recovered from traveling the Nile, Aubry. I am not so strong as I used to be. I truly may pass before you are ready to reign in your own right.

"I just want you to know, son, that I love you, and that I'm proud of you," the old man smiled kindly. "I wish your mother could have seen you grow, but I know that she, too, looks down on you with pride from above. You will be a good King, my son, I see it already. And if I die early, always know that I love you, and that you need merely to trust in God and live a life of virtue to find happiness."

"Thank you, father," the young boy muttered, blushing slightly.

"Ah, I remember youth," Baudouin said with a reminiscent smile. "Go; have fun. I will see you another time."

Baudouin would see him again, but by then he would not remember him. A relapse of the illness took him in November, one which stole from him his mind, and from which he did not recover. From November, the realm fell into the hands of his spymaster, Almuzzam.

On the 1st of March, 1230, Baudouin V Aleramici died after a protracted battle with his illness. In spite of all his prayers, he did not live to see his son old enough to take the throne. The most that can be said for him is that, at last, he was reunited with Eirene in Christ.

Baudouin V will be remembered as one of the best Kings of Jerusalem, but not because of any particular skill of his own so much as by circumstance. Baudouin's refusal to spend money improving his own holdings, his complete lack of effort to force French as a court language in Jerusalem (preferring to allow each of his vassals to speak their own languages in their own courts), and his failure to opportunistically expand in favor of mild, "safe" expansion (poor areas, such as Maan, the Sinai, etc.) are all criticisms which will be levied at the King over time. In spite of this, the Apostle will be remembered as a bastion of Christendom and a truly Christian King for all time.

Yet, at the time, his death left the throne to Aubry at the tender age of twelve and a half, also under the regency of his Spymaster (as Baudouin in the final months of his life had been), Almuzzam. Aubry is faced with the dilemma of being old enough to understand his father's death, but young enough to truly mourn it, in a way he cannot hide from his courtiers and nobles. It, unfortunately, makes him appear weak, and Aubry loses much of the respect his father had helped him build up within the first months of his ascension.

Although Almuzzam is a Muslim convert and a member of the Ayyubid royal house, he is one of the few vassals of Aubry who remains wholly loyal to the son of Baudouin V. That loyalty is what leads him to realize that Aubry, young and inexperienced as he is, is now ruling a Kingdom in grave peril.

The Mongol hordes, the same force which Baudouin had dismissed some decades earlier, have shown themselves to be no idle threat. They have conquered not only the vast majority of the Central Asian steppe, but have also forced Persia under their boot heel. Many of their vassals are Muslim and, because of this, their realm is not terribly stable, but when tens of thousands of horsemen will take to the saddle at the mere call of their Khan, it does not particularly need to be. It is undeniable that the Mongol Khanate is the strongest force in the world at present, and small Jerusalem, grievously weakened after the death of Baudouin, might yet need to stand against it.

Unfortunately for Aubry, his sister Sibylla is unwilling to support him at present (perhaps predictably, as soon as her father died the unstable Sibylla decided that Jerusalem should be her own), which only leaves Jerusalem more vulnerable in the face of the advancing Mongol hordes.

Therefore, Almuzzam has undertaken the only step he can think of to potentially save the realm: he has dispatched the best diplomat Jerusalem has to Constantinople, to beg the Byzantine Basileius Timotheos to grant the hand of one of his daughters to Aubry. Almuzzam believes that only an alliance with Byzantium, the only power even remotely nigh to the Mongol hordes in strength, can guarantee the continued existence of Jerusalem in the face of their aggression.

He prays to his new God, Jesus Christ, that the Basileius will be receptive in spite of the hostility between the Angelos and Aleramici dynasties. Now is a time for solidarity.

I have bad news for you Badouin. Iriene has been watching the whole time. Will she even deign to talk to you again when you pass from this life, at this rate?

And his son...what will he do when he learns his sister was put away on his account?

>>147562554
Aubry isn't zealous like his father, so if it looks like they'll fuck him that's a possibility, but I'm not going to go that route without at least trying to fight them off first. If I can build a Christian Ring in the Levant (Byzantium/Jerusalem/Egypt), which admittedly is looking increasingly unlikely just now, we might be able to win.

Rule the Waves is just a Hearts of Iron game with a more focused timespan and with a focus on naval combat.
>>
>>147562989
Oh shit I didn't even think about that, if I marry one of Ghengis's heirs' daughters I can get a non-aggression pact with them. Assuming they'll actually be willing to do it, that is. That would honestly be better than buttering up to the Angelos clan, or vassalizing myself to the Mongols for protection.

Hmm. I'm not sure what I'll do yet, but I might consider that.

Rule the Waves is a game about naval combat. It's not grand strategy.

It has no land combat. You use no diplomacy. You are an fleet admiral. It's a naval sim, it's not GS.

Don't worry senpai, I know. I'm still going to proceed trying to get the alliance with the Angelos, at least until Aubry turns 16. If he comes of age and still nothing is coming from that, I'll need to look elsewhere for an alliance, and that might necessitate a deal with the devil to protect Jerusalem from the Mongols.
