Doing Expert mode playthrough(first one since 1.3), went mostly Ranger, got my shit pushed by Red Pillar, went Melee after, preparing for Moonman now.
How much can a Terraria character lift?
One ingot of gold is actually 4 ingots if we put them on the ground, and they take up a space of 60cm X 60 cm X 60 cm, the most dense ingots we got that we know the real weight is Platinum, the denseness is 21.45 grams per cubic centimeter.
The most costly thing we can make is a Throne from 20 silk and 30 Platinum, we don't know the real density of Terraria silk so let's ignore silk, and we can hold 99 of those thrones per inventory space.
One ingot takes up space of 216 thousand cubic centimeters, that means one ingot weighs 4633,2 KG, that is huge.
One inventory space can hold 2970 platinum ingots, and our character has 50 inventory spaces, but we can sacriface 2 spaces to get 80 more via usage of Piggy Bank and Safe, that gives us 128 inventory spaces, we can also hold one stack on our mouse so it's 129.
But wait, let's first calculate the equipment, platinum armor and accesories.
A whole set of armor in armor slot and vanity slot will take up 180 ingots, and a platinum watch will take 10 more.
So in summary, our character can lift 383320 platinum bars (keep in mind, when you put them down it's actually four, one bar is just an inventory icon) so.
383320 * 4633,2KG = 1775998224KG
The eiffel tower weighs 10100000 kg.
Terraria character can lift 175 eiffel towers.
While still running at full speed with Frostspark Boots, dashing with Master Ninja Gear, Flying with Wings, Quadruple Jumping with Bundle of Balloons and charging with Shield of Cthulhu.

Because the infectious biomes spread way, way faster above ground than underground. ANd also because that zone was well connected and allowed for the spread to go inside. Look at the top left part of the jungle. The crimson advances through the surface until the bottom of the pond and then it stops. It's because ti doesn't have anything near it that can be corrupted. The opposite happened on the right part that you've mentioned: it had a lot fo blocks nearby that could be corrupted, and it was above ground, so it spread very fast.

Smash some altars (at least 3). Work toward Titanium/Adamantite armor. Grab a second hellforge too.
You'll need a molten pickaxe to mine cobalt/palladium. You'll then need to make a cobalt/palladium axe or drill to mine the next tiers, mythril/orichalcum (tier 2) and titanium/adamantite (tier 3). Use the tier 2 bars to make an anvil, then use that anvil to combine 30 tier 3 ore and a hellforge to make a tier 3 forge.
That should keep you busy for a while.
