I am curious however whether Nintendo will continue the dual screen design for their next series. It takes a lot to process two screens and it's the reason why 3DS screens aren't HD, but are dual screens basically the image of what people expect from Nintendo handhelds now? (Or is that how Nintendo perceives the public image of their handheld market?)

I really enjoyed the release of chinpokomon x (300 hours played, my most played 3DS game) but that's probably cause for whatever reason, the game made me better understand Pokemon and got me into the more intricate aspects of the main series, and for whatever there were some aspects of the singleplayer that stood out to me.
If you look at the game through every specific sequence rather than the big picture it probably sucks ass, but I'm forgiving since the game was clearly hindered by a hardware gap and required a ton of prep work to even exist. If Sun & Moon sucks too then I dunno what to say, I guess the mobile takeover was real.

I don't actually mind XY's experience system THAT much, it's the other stuff I really dislike. The bland locations, lackluster music, the concept of having a group of friends instead of a rival, and a few other things that don't even need to be mentioned.

So is there any place to reliably get on-cartridge romhacks? I found an Etsy store but they're "on break" right now that has a couple games, but is there any sort of reliable place to get romhacks on a cartridge for cheap rather than just on a flashcart? I think it's neater to have them that way than selecting them through a menu.

Well the problem with eBay bootlegs is the battery is most likely going to go out or they do some lazy shit that causes the game to break. I have a bootleg copy of SMB3 for the GBA and you literally can't get through the first stage, you just fall through the floor like five feet in since there's no ground at all.

I'm doing just fine and then I get sent into a small cavern where skells can't go and I have to fight a flying skell sized enemy at level 46 on a small platform surrounded by lava. To add insult to injury, I can't even throw the quest away so now I'm forced to level my entire team up 10 levels before I do anything else in the game.

There's really no answer to that, it's up to preference.
Some people like the updated controls and map interface for Zero Mission, where as others like the complexity and difficulty of the original.
As a remake Zero Mission tries to be a little too ambitious with it's remake, the additional upgrade placement is wacky and contradicts the "flow" of the original game for some fans, and the ending Zero Suit sequence is a goofy example of that.
I do enjoy the art direction of Zero Mission however, it's my favorite Metroid graphically speaking, and the music is a rare example of a GBA game not sounding like crap.
