New bowmaster power: ranged poison needle. Costs 20 hp an attempt, but I've never used the real thing to know how effective it is against monsters that aren't the babble. Took three hits (and two misses) to kill this AHMD.

Are you training axes? That exec axe should be taking priority. For range, I recommend you find a blowgun and needles. They are effective even if you have literally 0 skill in throwing. Curare is broken against anything that can't resist poison. It'll come handy in shoals. Sadly, you got snake and it's rather useless there.
When going shoals carry a lightning wand with you. The noise it makes when evoked breaks mesmerization.

Do axes crosstrain maces? Firestarter is good if you have rF+ to resist the deadly fireballs it creates. The weapon provides more resistance so you don't get yourself killed.
Shoals is very open and firestarter is extremely noisy. You do the math. This becomes manageable later on, when your character can stand being surrounded like in Vaults 5.
in Cata Experimental does solder have any use other than crafting ammo? I can't seem to find anything that doesn't just use the bare soldering iron instead.

I think the more recent improvements have mainly focused on making adding new stuff easier, and removing old code that does nothing (or is secretly broken). Refactoring of the json files.
For example, a monster was limited before to have only one attack, now they can have several.
So there is some progress. It just is slower than a snail, and not as cute. And has a lot more infections.

Good thing you are asking this. When you are ready to open the trove, make sure you have some inventory space (10 slots or more should be fine) to pick up whatever is inside. Once you exit, you can't go back inside. You can just drop some stuff right at the entrance to make room before going in and it pick everything up when you are done.
