Pretty much every 2k hero is good and functions well in the meta. ETC, Valla, and Malfurion are all excellent first heroes to learn that teach you crucial lessons about positioning.
Johanna, Sonya, and Zagara are the best heroes you can learn starting off in the 4k bracket.
Thrall and Rehgar are good heroes to learn in the 7k bracket. Falstad is also good, but is a lot more difficult to play than aforementioned heroes. Avoid most other heroes in this bracket while you're still learning.
Avoid every hero in the 10k bracket while you're still learning. With the exception of Xul, Ming, and Kael'thas most of the heroes in this bracket have unusual playstyles and are typically a bit more challenging. It's tempting to pick up Ming, she's got a very low skill floor with (despite the jokes and memes) a high-ish skill ceiling to improve with but she teaches TERRIBLE lessons about positioning and overextending while you're still learning since she can easily get away with it.

Xul is still ridiculously good and underrated with only a 35% pick rate. Meta is about the same, bruisers are a lot more valuable though.
