So what's general opinion on having an arisen/pawn with balanced attack/magic stats? I like all the vocations too much to just main one, and I typically pick complementary vocations for my pawn. I've completed the game through Daimon 2.0 with virtually no build planning or min-maxing before, and am going for a planned "balanced" glass cannon build this time. I guess ot doesn't matter too much for my Arisen, since she'll have better stats overall than my first one and I did fine with her, but will my pawn suffer for having low def/mdef stats or not being min-maxed one way or the other? With my current plan she'll have 406 attack and 418 magic by 100.

That doesn't mean MK is bad, it just means you should use pure weapons. Most of the spells rely somewhat on your physical stats, so having a fuck ton of strength will still help your spells.
But really though, physical MK is way cooler than smacking magic floaty balls. Just slap on Abyssal Anguish and some melee skills and you're basically a Fighter on crack with magical abilities on the side for versatility.

Just completed my first trip to the Shadow Fort after clearing my way through the Ancient Quarry ( I like to rp that a traveler told me about the shortcut at either the pawn guild or Arsmiths Ale House).
My next plan of action is to go through the ancient groves (unknowingly coming upon a dragon) and then looping around th hinterlands until I'm back home in Cassardas to visit the villagers and have a good few days rest before heading towards The Water Gods Alter in order to help unlock ancient mysteries.
After helping the friendly monks with their task it's back to Gran Soren to report my progress to Sir Maximilian and to continue to curry favor with the honorable Duke Edmun Dragonsbane.
Fuck this game embodies the heart and spirit of ADVENTURE!

I said it a long time ago, but Dragon's Dogma managed to perfectly encapsulate this feeling of yearning for adventure.
Like when you're a kid and you have little toy knights, and you just bash them against each other or take them outside for some grand quests involving your cat/dog and some plastic toys.
I think the fact that so many areas in this game are optional but filled with little details or just empty gives this game breath.
It's the one thing I prefer over Skyrim way of handling exploration. In Skyrim you go one way, find a dungeon, loop the dungeon and get some loot, then go in another direction.
In Dragon's Dogma you go in one direction, get ambushed by a harpy, get a really nice view as a reward, then follow the cliffside to a secluded beach with a lone boat.
It's really the best feeling.

It does when you consider that the split damage is calculated against both magick and standard defense, on top of the elemental resistances. (In Ascalon's case, not all that much because Holy isn't really resisted by many things)
Both damages aren't very high, and since your character seems to have balanced our their stat gains towards both, you're going to do a lot less damage than someone with, per say, Cursed Bite or even Dragon's Dogma against most of the Bitterblack enemies.

Then you should know better. Roleplaying is about immersing yourself in a character and behaving as they would, even if you, as a player, know better.
If you're playing some sheltered fucboi prince and the DM starts describing a garden full of weird statues and then a large lizard-like creature, you don't go "oh shit that's a basilisk everyone look away or you'll be petrified". It's really good if you were to have played maybe a sorcerer for a long time and had a really high magic attack. Those augments aren't very good. I'd use a ring slot on a master ring that boosts health and/or stamina if you can find one but I wouldn't waste an augment slot on it. That said stamina can be offset with curatives, health you might want to worry about leveling up as something else a little (fighter gets the best health growth iirc) but you can definitely get by without doing so, you just need to be more careful about not getting hit. Armour offsets poor base defence and also helps with the whole health thing. Once you goldforge shit the defence is usually pretty good even on robes.

Why do wakestones exist? are they just for certain quests? You can just pick up your fallen pawns from the floor, so they don't really serve a mechanical purpose, right? They seem an awful lot of work just to revive some dead kid.

The more pawn you have in your party, the more XP is divided between your pawns. Running with only you and your pawn means you gets double XP for each fights.

Pawn training.Buy elixirs from Jonathan in the Encampement for what you want and use the knowledge chair to fine tune.
Your pawn will learn from you, meaning using lots of ranged will encourage your pawn to stay out of combat and use ranged option.

Mages pawn are tuned for supporting the rest of the party through buffs and healing. If you really want combos you should either play a magic class yourself or play a more physical one for your pawn.

It's automatic.
One dirty trick if you find yourself overloaded on stuff on the road is to give all your shit to a support pawn then to chuck him out from a cliff or to the sea, it'll empty his inventory in your Inn chest.
Though this is an evil technique as it gives 3 star ratings and no gift to the owner of that pawn.

wait, 3 stars are evil? I've always been trying to be honest when rating looks of pawns, and don't really know the etiqquette for gifting, so I just give them random furs, or sometimes a hoe if they're women.

The unwritten rule of rating pawn is :
1 star if they are wearing princess clothes.
1 star if they are guardian / nexus combo.
X star if they are acquisitor and left you during combat to gather loot.
1 star if they are a mage pawn with only boons and no attack spells.
Basically 3 star rating is synonym with "Average", as in "Meh" pawn. 4 star means a good pawn, 5 star is a pawn you really liked for his style or combat training.
Gifts are more important later in the game, especially Bitterblack Island where some of the enhancing stuff is pretty rare. You can ask for specific things in this threat to be given to you as gift.

Striders and Assassins excel at climbing on large monsters and ruining their day. Dire Gouge with the Dragon's Dogma sword is monstrous.
Ensnare is pretty great for keeping smaller foes locked down.
Assassin gets a bunch of amazing augments and the highest attack growth in the game.
I've never really used bows outside of grounding flying enemies and applying debuffs, but it's my understanding that the key to damage with them is x-fold arrow skills and aiming at weakpoints.

Assassin will offer more variety- you can keep all 4 weapon types on you and swap things out as you please. Keep a sword and shield on you for small enemies and switch to a rusted bow and daggers for bigger guys if you like, for example.
Sorcerer can be a lot of fun too, but don't just load up on the heavy shit - pack a couple lower rank, faster casting spells on you too. Having multiple sorcerers with the same huge spells is pretty awesome too, so that is worth trying out at least once.

I played the game to completion once before- as strider -> assassin- but did no dlc or much postgame at all.
Since then, I've played every vocation since and never finished because they're kinda boring for me, and this time I've gotten mystic knight up well. Thing is, my main pawn somehow has brought me 400k RC and I'm still on chapter 4, so I kinda don't wanna restart if I'm gonna go into BBI with this. My main pawn has the appearance of what I'd like to play as for assassin, so is there an easy way to swap their appearances, or will I have to buy the act of metamorphosis and just work on the appearances to get a rough swap?
I did fighter -> warrior -> mystic knight this time so I've got a good lot of augments for assassin.

You mean the noticeboard quests? Unless there's a particular gold (applies silence iirc) or aneled (applies oil, both kinds are weak for actual damage) weapon you want most of them aren't really worth it anyway. Do the griffon one though, that unlocks the gloves of might (you can buy more from the guy by the riftstone in the encampment after your first pair iirc) which are extremely useful for reds and yellows (they allow you to climb much faster). Same goes for escorts, unless you want a particular reward or affinity with someone (later you get an item that instantly maxes affinity anyway btw) don't bother.
Also make escort quests easy on yourself, you can use a ferrystone on them and just warp to the location if you put a portcrystal there first.

What vocation are you? There's various vocation-specific tactics that work well. No matter the class you can purchase throwblasts from one of the merchants in Cassardis in infinite quantities and they do assloads more damage than anything else early on, they should oneshot the common enemies in bbi1.0.
More importantly the weapons you actually get in BBI are usually suitable for taking BBI on. Just cross your fingers or reset on chest drops.

Yeah, kind of. You can switch you and your main pawn's vocations after reloading to get a different set of shit. Basically there's three queues of results, and any time you purify an item all three queues for that item type advance by one. The queues correlate to vocation colour. So make both you and your pawn yellow, then blue, then red to see all the possibilities, and remember the order you purify in for each if you want things from multiple queues (eg you're playing mystic knight and for red you get a mace you want from the second weapon you purify but for blue you get the shield you want from the first, you can purify the first as blue and then switch to red to get both).

Guns can be done well in a low-tech setting but I don't feel like they're right for this setting (though if there were mounted combat and a more knightly feel I could see them having the very same place on the battlefield as real early guns had- Punching through plate armour). Yeah it can look pretty silly. The larger you are the more you can carry/less stamina you lose from doing so.

Yeah, almost nothing is irrelevant in this game. It's like they did all the polish first and forgot the game they were polishing, because it's very short and empty but has incredibly refined mechanics.
Being tall makes you run faster and gives you better reach in melee but keeps you from fitting in some places and makes you heavier as well generally; Being heavy makes you slower, allows you to carry more, makes your stamina regen but also deplete slower (so you basically have more stamina), weighs down harpies that grab you more (supposedly), gives you strong wind resistance, makes you harder to knock down (thus it's great for sorcerers and warriors) and makes it harder to climb. I might be forgetting other things. If you want to go fast you could play an eight foot tall noodleboy.

Sorcerer this time on Hard. Level 50 and doing Everfall and it feels kind of weak compared to the Sin I played on PS3. Mostly this is due to how stale and slow all attacks are. It does have some satisfactions with how grand the spells are.
I must however say the port is really good, and it feels so good to play this game with proper performance and visuals.

Then don't just use big slow spells. Use Focus Bolt with elemental buffs active. Use lower tier spells that still cast quickly - they still hurt like shit because sorcerers get stupid high magic attack and the bonuses for hitting elemental weaknesses is great. Hire more sorcerers for spell syncing to get the big shit off faster. Use shit like Miasma and Lassitude.
If you just sit back and throw tornadoes into groups of enemies before they notice you, no shit it's going to get stale.

Some of the enemy placement in this game is so fucking stupid considering how big they are and how fucked your camera angle can get. This fucking tormentor takes 10 fucking years to kill because he's in a room where his fucking head almost touches the ceiling and his swing covers about half the room. On top of that every fucking time he knocks you down you fall in water which extinguishes your fucking lantern. It's also hard to lure him out. I swear to god they did this shit on purpose.

First time was on the second attempt, and I killed him on the first try the other two times.

What? Do you mean when it tells you that you get a severe stamina drain from using overleveled weapons? At 51 (iirc) you can use every weapon in the game without a stamina drain but like, just don't use weapons that are overleveled if that's the case. I can't think of anywhere else BBI tells you to come back when you've leveled up and in fact it's clearly designed to be doable if you go there at the start of the game, with shit for low-level characters all over the place that wouldn't even benefit higher-level characters much.

BBI is tough to do "properly" right off the bat, you're better off clearing it once with throwblasts, then grind levels off the first two bosses and bitterblack armor/weapon l2-3's and get all the cool augments for your character/main pawn. When you come to the point where you feel nothing is really challenging you anymore, you can go to the last boss once more and try your luck without crutches.

They don't seem quite the same to me, though I tend to spam daggers in both. They are similar enough that I bought Dogma after getting a plat in Dark Souls.
As for Souls aesthetic, it looked like they copied from those Lord of the Ring movies pretty hard while Dogma used anime/mango, D&D, and some greek stuff.

This actually amounts to a larger moveset than Souls, albeit not much larger. The moveset is customisable but while individual weapon types have more variation than in Dark Souls (again, more akin to Monster Hunter), the variations within a class are more like the variation between, say, a straight sword and curved sword in Souls. Most of the skills are not that extravagant, and those that are are mage skills, and... Souls has magic that is similarly flashy and where you can carry like eight spells at once.

I seriously hope you know what Shadow of the Colossus is, but not knowing about it is the only reason I can think that you'd bring this up when it's already been mentioned. It's fine. Just stack defensive augments and you can tank shit pretty well. Once you get some passive HP regen from armor you're golden. Make sure your characters are tall for the extra reach and you won't have much problem with harpies and their variants either.

Fate Skewer for example is far more satisfying than any backstap could ever hope to be, and only a single class relies "heavily" on perfect blocks and even that is only if you build for it.

Oh boy, it's another "vastly misrepresent the features of one game in defence of another" episode. Souls magic is about as diverse as Dragon's Dogma magic, which is to say, decent. All it lacks is shit like the sorcerer nuke spells, though it has a few things that approach that kind of thing and to be frank those get old pretty fast anyway.

Stamina is a non-issue in DD. Even if you ignore the massive surplus of restoratives that can be used instantly from a pause menu at any time, stamina is still very generous compared to Souls.

Combat is fairly loose. You have a lot of freedom of movement, with lots of jumping around, and it's much easier to just wade into a group of enemies and start spamming like a retard. And enemies come in much larger groups to suit that style. It's not like Souls where you're consistently squaring off 1v1 or 1v2 with strong humanoid mooks.
Both games are god-tier with god-tier combat, but they aren't very similar.
