check this out right

humans have dressed in some real silly gear in our history, especially in combat

look at this insane shit no one would wear that for practical fighting it's all showboating

it's because combat hadn't evolved to really demand the need of khaki and camo and stuff and people were more interested in making their army look neat

nowadays we know our shit and have lots of knowledge on combat and combat training and know not to dress our soldiers like retards

but check it out right

what if you nuked society and reverted them back to the stone age. not the literal stone age tho, a weird hybrid of a societal reset on top of a graveyard full of futuristic technology.

you'd probably get people who, not quite understanding specifics of and learning modern combat, misuse armor, and wear stuff purely because it looks cool. showboating.

raiders ranging from junkie retards to organized bandits do this, I don't see why the elite veteran class of an army wouldn't wear something to look intimidating. also, it's to appeal to the cowboy aesthetic.

Yeah I mean explain why power armor is grey ceramic, or even worse in the case of T45-60 shiny steel..

Look at the legion, or raiders, why do you think they wear red colors, flags, dog helmets, masks, rebar, and bones? Because all of those things strike fear into the enemy.

I don't like how Bethesda keeps turning comfy natural wild and farm animals like wolves, rabbits, chickens, fish, and deer into radioactive disgusting editable giant monsters.

I just want to hunt deer and rabbit, then return to my farm with my cows chicken and pigs that don't all have cancer and radiation poisoning.

I don't know. I think there were references to pack mules in a previous game, but that may have been an idiom. Some other critter might have been the beast of burden. Or, horses and donkeys are around somewhere.

Exactly, Brandon Lee had a hard enough time keeping all of his edge underneath that coat. There would be no room for a set of armor.

Which was my point - the NCR troopers are all wearing Cavalry gear. If you really want to distance yourself from that whole "horses" thing, dressing all of the soldiers like they come from a military with a Cav tradition seems a bit idiotic.

Thats what happens after you wind up on the ship, you wake up in a room, get dressed, take the pistol and the 20 rounds it came with and then try not to die this time.

I have an idea for how to implement persistent between loops storage as well, kinda like the warehouses in Mystery Dungeon games. That way if you play it smart and manage to find those safe spots you can stockpile whatever you can't carry in that room and it'll persist if you die.

no I haven't

I asked for real world examples of soldiers wearing coats over armor and no one was able to come up with them.

Riot armor is designed with a specific purpose in mind and putting loose closthing over the top of it fucks with that purpose.

Open coats do not protect you from dust. The coats on NRC armor are so ill fitting, the have to have holes cut in them to accommodate the armor underneath. Not to mention the fact they are wearing a horsemans coat, when there are no horses.

It's stupid on multiple levels. The only meaningful refutation so far has been "Giddyup Cowboy."

I don't care if the general wants to peacock in impractical armor, wearing a silly hat. one guy, not on the front line.

I do care if 'elite troops' are given a uniform that flaps around like your mothers cunt lips. loose clothing is a hindrance in combat, moreso over bulky armor.

dusters have buttons and are tied down on horseback. it's what the slit in the back and the tails are for, to cover your legs. you don't leave the coat open, or you will get dusty and wet.

so much for your appreciation of tradition. it apparently comes from California.
>>
>>147060946

Is that 20% to cripple legs? Wouldn't wounding or explosive be even more overpowered?
>>
>>147053181
They don't have actual vehicles because Bethesda doesn't want to ruin their illusion of a "large immersive open world".

You know how San Andreas looked like it had a huge map but when you turned the draw distance up and turned the fog off everything was like 2 feet away from each other?
It's like that.
>>
>>147061272
>dusters have buttons
As does the one worn by NCR rangers

>tied down on horseback
Depends on the coat. That isn't a given.

>you don't leave the coat open, or you will get dusty and wet.

Depends on conditions and the rider's preferences. The coat, even worn open, catches the majority of the dust blowing onto the rider, and is significantly more comfortable when worn this way. When moving around on foot, unless you're in a sand storm, you'd be better off wearing it open.
>>
>>147061338
maybe, but at least they can still try if you've got an explosive weapon.

once you cripple their legs, unless it's an assaultron, the fight is pretty much over
>>
>>147060991
>loose clothing is a hindrance in combat

Guarantee you've never been in combat. You're one of those RP pretend /k/ autists.

anyway, the rank and file of the minutemen wear exclusively loose clothing. All Enclave officers in Fallout 3 wear loose coats. The Brotherhood's scribes, elders and initiates wear loose robes. If your autism is triggered by somethin so petty, just don't play video games. They are not for you, clearly, unless you want to play ARMA

>loose clothing is a hindrance in combat
>>
>>147061518
I've done some training and worn armor on occasion. Competition only.

There is a reason professional fighters don't wear shirts. Having loose clothes over the top of riot armor defeats the purpose of riot armor.
>>
>>147061569
Let me explain to you very carefully.

The Riot Armour was obviously designed to prtect from small arms and melee weapons during severe riots.

The NCR desert rangers found a cache of such, and added a coat over it to protect from dust and also add to their iconic presence, as can be seen in the statue outside the Mojave Outpost of the Desert Ranger. They're intimidating for enemies of the NCR and rallying for the troops; ingame dialogue supports this idea.

Inb4 someone can grab it. Mojave combat is not face-to-face. The intro cinematic shows a desert ranger using a sniper rifle, and it seems their purpose is as shock troops to decimate. They would be very unlikely to be grabbed by anyone, and if they were, they would just blow said person's head off with their giant revolvers. I'm not sure why you think it's impractical to have style. Those guys can do whatever the fuck they want, it clearly works for them. Besides, EVEN IF it didn't make 100% sense (which in my view it does) it still works as an ingame design and fits with the world as it was written.

Just... please be quiet? You're just boring.
>>
>>147061521
I don't know. Explosive weapons are definitely op against ghouls
>>
>>147061446
you're ignoring the armor underneath. comfort ceases to be a factor. otherwise, why wear armor at all?
>>
>>147061839
>defeats the purpose of riot armour

No it doesn't. Having a coat over a set of ballistic armour doesn't magically make bullets ignore the armour. In fact, if the coat is made of a tough fabric, it might even help protect the wearer from smaller calibers. Denim jackets have been observed to repel .22 caliber bullets on rare occasion in real life.

inb4 grabbing. Desert rangers do not quash riots where one would be grabbed. They hide in sand/mountains and shoot people.

>was that police officer wearing a rain coat over riot armor? did you take a picture?

>how is it practical?

NCR Rangers are special forces generally deployed in desert conditions, and may do so in survival conditions for extended periods of time as scouts or other such long-duration roles.

To that end, gear tailored for wear in the desert, and that is capable of protecting the wearer from the elements would be a suitable choice for issue. Clothing such as a duster that protects the wearer from rain and dust, generally keeps the individual wearing it cooler during the day and warmer at night, and is durable, is very well suited to that sort of deployment.

Alternately, it may not be chosen for those reasons. The NCR shows a clear lineage of cavalry wear in their combat uniforms. This may be because the NCR has active cavalry units within their structure, and the usage of such animals would be of great value to the Desert Rangers - this alone would be a reason for widespread issue of dusters to these troops. The issue of dusters may also be a more ceremonial object used primarily as morale-boosting propaganda.

All are practical reasons for dusters to see issue among NCR troops.

>Open dusters do not.

I take it you've never been out riding a horse in the desert. They do.

They don't wear the coat right.

Its just there to make the design look cooler.
>>
>>147062308
That is because most times they are seen ingame, they are not in an active sandstorm, and so they do not have the coat fastened. Also, the devs need to show the ballistic vest, or autists like you would ask why a coat has such high DT.

Obsidian could not, however, make a seperate model to satiisfy your autism, since they only had a year to make the fucking game. Use your imagination; in universe they probably buckle up their coats if the sand hits.

Then why wear armor at all? Why not wear camo or a ghillie suit? Hell, why not wear one of the denim jumpsuits that the powder gangers wear, as it is apparently lightweight and bulletproof.

Giddyup cowboy.
>>
>>147062550

When do you see NCR Rangers on horseback?

You're right! Let's just let our special forces guys (whose very presence is a morale booster,) run around wearing denim jumpsuits!

Why not just take the coat off until the sandstorm hits?

Why wear a gas mask all day? The filters should be dead.

The coat makes little to no sense they are already wearing clothes and armor under it.

The outfit is made for hyperthermia.

So you literally just get butthurt over dusters because they remind you of cowboys. I think you have some serious mental issues, like actually. Nobody should be this reddit-tier anal anguished over a fucking coat. Amazing that you're the one accusing others of having lacking arguments.

>>147062550
>denim jumpsuits powder gangers wear
It's not AS bulletproof you moron, this is really not complicated. The powder ganger crap also lacks a helmet which apparently has a night vision function, and also does not have the unique appearance of the Desert Ranger armour which is useful for propaganda and morale boosting.

For the integrated night vision system, and to keep their faces hidden from the organization that has infiltration units and assassins?

>The outfit is made for hyperthermia.
Definitely, that's why they were worn historically in the desert by people wearing heavy clothing made to survive extended use and wear.

Lock and load, Mall Ninja.

I thought the argument was about how functional the outfit was? They could have worn something else and made that iconic like a turban.

Its not, especially for the environment, but it does look cool.

Its an entirely different situation, but to put it in perspective put that guy in armor on top of that and then put a duster on him then put him in the desert and make him fight.

>For the integrated night vision system, and to keep their faces hidden from the organization that has infiltration units and assassins?
Wouldn't the infiltration units figure out better ways to identify them than when they are squatting in the bush.

>Definitely, that's why they were worn historically in the desert by people wearing heavy clothing made to survive extended use and wear.
With gas masks?

my entire argument, though I would not frame peacocking as a positive thing, especially in a Wild West culture. thank you.

he's a ceremonial guard. not in an active warzone.

who are this historical group that wore riot armor with trenchcoats over the top?

I haven't paid attention to your entire argument (I don't have autism, and I do appreciate style), but it seemed like you were framing it as a bad thing

but unless you've never interacted with people (as evidenced by "peacocking is bad"), there is no situation in which looking good is bad

mate, you just said that your "entire argument" is that style is substance. If style is substance, why would looking cool be impractical?

>I haven't paid attention to your entire argument
So you're basically saying you have no clue what you are arguing about?

Also peacocking is bad when you don't want to be seen.

>>147064123
Okay, but if you want to look like something to be feared and aspired to all at once, there is no reason not to look cool

could be a language barrier. I said the armor was impractical and the only positive was 'style'.

One of you only cares about style. The other has his jimmies rustled at the thought that I find capeshit ridiculous. Giddyup cowboy.
>>
>>147064303
it's not a language barrier. I said, what if style is substance, and you said that was your entire argument, and then proceeded to say it was impractical.

you simply fail to understand the practical uses for looking good (no doubt a function of your personal loserdom).

I'm telling you that style vs substance is a false dichotomy endemic to those with no style (at least you have substance, right?). Style has a function, faggot

you don't want to be seen when fighting that means they can shoot back and any gear can become iconic if its worn by a group.
