That's not how Zelda works. They don't make games to fill the gaps. You can say that SS was trying to fill something but it was not, it's way back in the timeline and in the beginning to fill anything.
Zelda is not about an overarching plot with everything detailed down to it's most minuscule particle. You have to deal with its vagueness and that's it. And Nintendo will never make a Zelda game where the ending is link being defeated.

OoT's Link is like DBZ's Trunks. Each timeline that he existed in is separate. There's a timeline where he went back to being a kid and a timeline where he stayed an adult.

I wonder if it actually were the Golden Goddesses who flooded Hyrule. I also wonder why they went with that approach. Was it the king's suggestion and they simply went with it?
It's not exactly a good approach and as it turns out, highly ineffective too. Certainly not befitting near omnipotent beings. If it were "Goddesses", were it the "Golden Goddesses" or some other, lesser goddesses? With SS, Hyrule's divinity became much more complex.
To me, the Golden Goddesses are too powerful to even give a shit. Anyone who's capable of keeping the Triforce together can use it. That fact tells me that any "goodness" or good/bad principle cannot be linked to the Golden Goddesses. Any source telling it differently is rewritten history or horseshit. Of course Hylia looks out for her people, but do we know she's telling the truth? To her, the Hylians and their allies are the good guys. But anything in existence was created by the Golden Goddesses, monsters and demons too.

Well the way I see it, if the people of Hyrule weren't just assuming that the Hero of Time could just jump to any time then Ganondorf must've returned within a reasonable length of time for young link to have grown up and kicked his ass again. Granted, the crux of this assumption is that the 7 years of age is what makes the difference between Link's life and death.
Of course, for all we know the BotW Link is the adult OoT Link put to sleep to fight a future Ganondorf and he just didn't wake up because his Sheikah slate was on vibrate.

Fuck it, I'm still awake so I'll post this thought I had recently. The Downfall Timeline has never sat right with me, and because BotW has such strong ties to the Adult Timeline but is almost definitely intended to be tied to the original LoZ as well, I suspect we'll be seeing some timeline shuffling on it's 2020 release. As such, I've been thinking a lot about the timelines recently.
One theory I've thought of is "what if a third timeline was created by Zelda sending Link back?" There would be the Child Timeline: remains as we know it; the Adult Timeline: where Link disappears from the world (this messes with the reincarnation cycle); and then for lack of a better word there's the Elder Timeline: where Link does not disappear and lives out the rest of his days in the aftermath of the Adult Timeline. In the Adult Timeline, the Hero's Spirit is "lost," if you will. Link never died, it sort of, maybe didn't exist for a while because it disappeared with its vessel, but the end result is that Link could not be reincarnated when Ganon (not Ganondorf, as shown in the Wind Waker prologue) broke the seal, so "he never appeared." In the Elder Timeline, Link lived, he died, he reincarnated, and when Ganon broke the seal he was ready. Potentially, it was even A Link to the Past when Ganon broke the seal, when I heard that Ocarina of Time was apparently the prologue of ALttP elaborated upon, I assumed "The Sealing War" was a name given to the 7 years after Ganondorf took power or a more exaggerated recollection of it.

Link could not have been defeated before or during the final fight, and things could not have gone differently, there's no fucking "flag" or event or cause that would trigger the Hero of Time to lose.

I have this vision of Zelda, Link, and Ganny sitting around a campfire in set points throughout the game (a psudeo-hub of sorts) generally being bros, doing meaningless shenanigans with their Triforces (weakened in Termina), mocking each other while drunk.
Then Ganny s.sneaks away to a perch and tries to assiassinate either of the other two with an arrow or something. They dodge, lock eyes with him, then procede to,give each other shit eating grins.

And then, I thought of an even darker--yet the more I think of it more compelling--turn of events. The "Elder Timeline" and the Adult Timeline as described above are switched. In other words, Link is removed from the timeline, the Hero's Spirit finds its way, reincarnates, and defeats Ganon when he breaks free, events proceed into ALttP and the Downfall Timeline. In the Elder Timeline, Link is still alive after saving Hyrule. He becomes somewhat of a celebrity. He's the legendary Hero of Time, known far and wide and revered by all. It all goes to his head a bit, he gets pretty chummy with the royalty.Note: It's either said or implied in the Hyrule Historia that the Hero's Shade is formed because Child Link regretted never being remembered as the hero, that his regret was that strong could imply an Adult Link recognized for his heroism would become vain.No hidden pedestal in the woods or spot in a second-banana temple, the Master Sword will rest in the Castle. We're gonna build a fucking statue of him in the castle (which, if you think about it, would have been much harder to do without a model). Adult Link grows old not out adventuring, but in the lap of luxury. He is beloved by the entire nation that rebuilt and continued generation after generation seeing "the hero" firsthand, he is more revered in later eras than ANY past hero has been, and he is never forgotten, even after the kingdom is.
But the kingdom still dies. Ganon returns, and the people look for the hero. Not for arms, not for allies, but for the Hero to appear like he once did, vanquish the evil, and save Hyrule once again. But the hero did not appear. There was no reincarnation of Link to fight off Ganon and save the day.Because Link is still alive.
And, seeing how in the Downfall/"Adult" Timeline Hyrule slowly dies on its march to "the last hero," perhaps the Hero of Time's failure--if true--was ultimately the best for the kingdom in the end?

Then in these veins how good/plausible does this sound (think this is a feasible alternative to what Soulsfag wants):
I would essentially have the mask collecting thing make a return. A simplistic idea but I would have an increase in the total mask number from what it was in MM.
The cool part however; is that I would also introduce the "Face Sword". This guy would also double as the classic companion character. A sword that has a blank face on its guard that the various masks in the game could be equipped to, giving it various powers and puzzle solving utilities. The game would be gloriously difficult in places where you had to nimbly switch between masks both on Link and the sword in a very short span of time to use the very subtle effects each variety imparts in a given situation.
>One mask to raise a cube of earth from the ground, then a fire mask to strike only the left side of that cube (aim carefully), a time-slow mask on Link so you can run to the other side before the fire runs out, and put the bunny hood on the sword whose now-fast thrusts are the only thing that can hit every puzzle slot in time.
Have enemies in certain challenge modes/areas require things like this as well.

The best part; not only would you have unique masks different from MM (bring back the old must-haves of course) you'd also get to actually place the masks on your SWORD at the same time, granting you elemental transformations, puzzle-solving utilities, and other abstract stuff. Maybe replace the Ocarina by having a legendary "Bard Mask" that you must aquire that you then place on your sword to gain the song making mechanic. Put it on Link to -learn- the various songs throughout the game. Put it on the sword to -play- the songs. You can even use 2 masks at once by equiping one on Link, one on the sword. Best part is that the Transformation masks (of which I'm thinking 5 instead of 3) will change the instrument depending on the race.
Heck even have the minor masks add these purely aesthetic aesthetic -slight- musical/visual alterations (or even with a tiny puzzle solving potential) to the base instrument. I also have an idea for another mask category other than transformation. 'Summon Masks'. The only one of which I have thought up is Midna's Fused Shadow. Putting it on summons Imp Midna. Put it on the sword; True Midna. Midna + Bard-Sword would even give her a Twili instrument to play instead of you.
This would be how the optional pick-a-companion thing some people are clamoring for would operate. Tons of waifu potential, had idea for a mechanic grill that would use a bunch of gadgets including a mortar to rain hell from, the back while you charge the front. Pretty much pic related.

Each summon character, lets use Midna as an example, would have two modes: contextual and companion (mask on Link and Sword respectively). Midna in Imp from would do her action like playing a Twili instrument among others then go away. Putting a Summon mask on Face would bring True Midna with dual Twili scimitars or some shit and would follow you "Hey I'll carry yo shit" style. May or may not deprive you of your sword, dunno.
There would be three special masks; one would be the mid game occurrence that is equivalent of gaining the upgraded Sword in the previous titles; the Mimic Mask. Now whatever mask you have on will be treated as if it's also on Link/Face Sword at the same time. The Goron weapon/item/action/effect can now be wielded by the Goron itself etcetera; boosting and/or altering it slightly.
The others would be the Bard Mask and, surprise surprise, Majoras Mask. I plan on having Fierce Diety be the antag so a fun little gimmick in having the final mask you collect be obtained in the same way you got FD in MM would be kickass. You know everyone and their grandma wondered what it'd be like for Link to don Majoras Mask so now they can. It'd be limited where you could put it on but just boss battles was kinda gay so it could have rare uses in the creme-de-la-creme of sidequests, challange modes and puzzles.
