It's got western avionics and doctrine behind it. It carries more, too, iirc. The MiG-29 was very head-down, which means you'd have to constantly shuffle through a bunch of instruments, and was meant to fly mostly under ground control, in the soviet style, leaving little room for pilot improvisation. The F-18 on the other hand was meant to have easily readable and accessible sensors, so the pilot was mostly free to plan, communicate, and outmaneuver its opponents.

Actually, since modern fighter engines are so reliable, double engined planes are statistically more accident prone than single engine jets, because since when modern jets fail, it tends to be catastrophic. I.E., the jets don't just stop working anymore, they generally blow up. Having a second engine next to a rapidly conflagrating cloud of used-to-be-the-first-engine is a terrible idea because that's just more fuel for the fire.

Shieeeet, I remember that one mission, "Weapons of mass destruction", I believe. Things went shit and you were locked in dogfight against fuckton of enemies only with Sham as your wingman. When the cavalry finally arrived, that allied attack and swarm of missles going from behind was one of the best things I've ever saw in this game.

I have been recently playing through the game again after a few years of leaving off on a hiatus.
I can attest that the Allied Attack option is quite useful for dispatching especially pesky enemies that just won't stay down or are very maneuverable. I.E: Drones or the Strigon Squadron. Though that may be due to a combination of being a bad pilot in game for the time being, and not having played it in a couple years. Trying to improve upon that though.
Anons, what would your advice be to simply flying better in such a game? Any advice on which targets to go after first? What equipment should either you and your wingman go with? (I have been using the F-22, the SU counterpart, and the Typhoon for the time being.)
I generally prefer hitting ground targets for the simple reason that they are static for the most part, and do not take up as much time in dealing with when compared to shooting down individual aircraft. At least when I wish to expedite a mission to completion. Though I have been slowly trying to better myself in shooting down aircraft. Hell, my kills with the machine guns have increased quite a bit to my surprise.
Getting a plane in the crosshairs however is another story. On a related note, I find that the cockpit view actually seems to help aim missiles in increasing the odds that they will hit their target by centering the targets on the console HUD screen in the center. At least in my experience.

Learn to use triangle in 3rd person view. Lock on view is your friend. Learn your missiles' turning radius. Learn to predict which way an enemy will turn and evade to. Pitching up is easier than pitching down, and you can bet your buns the enemy will strive to always do the former rather than the latter. If you feel gutsy, learn to strafe near the ground. It's easier to lose missiles since they're more likely to crash into the ground, but so are you. Yaw is handy for getting out of loops of enemies chasing you and getting behind them instead.

It's not completely unrealistic but it definitely makes some concessions in favor of fun.
The way I see it they're not trying to simulate everything perfectly, just simulate the way a squad works together to do something. The bullet ballistics are decent enough (no wind though) and if you want ultra autism mode there's ACE and ACRE.
It's also one of my favorite games to play co-op, I don't know quite why but it works really well.
