>>146584426
probably
>>146584507
Theres nothing to really talk about either
>>146583014
WHY
We can talk aboutBattlefield 1
>>146586093
Its shaping up to be a fantatstic WWII shooter.
>>146586093
What about Xenonauts?
>>146586290
Indeed
>>146586093
Looks like a mediocre WW2 reskin of BF4
>>146586529
I heard it was incredibly boring.
I was especially pissed that vehicle crews could not gain levels.
>>146586093
I like the guns even if they're prototypical
>>146586569
But it's not even a world war 2.
I/I EW anon from a thread or two ago again, still going good but i'm down to 8 remaining soldiers, it's july, about to raid the alien base once everyone gets plasma. Panic's low, EXALT continues to be fucking dicks (how often are you supposed to scan to keep cells from doing shit anyway?), and everything seems to be rolling smoothly. Cranking out firestorms with plasma cannons. Haven't got a foundry yet, would that be a good 2 or 3 day research to get? Should I focus more on armor? Are MECs worth anything? especially lategame?
>>146586832
Its not remotely WW1 either, its a ww2 reskin of BF4 gameplay wise
>>146586529
Sure. Strangely enough that is the only photo in my xenonauts folder. Why do I even have a folder.
>>146586554
>>146586569
It just really pisses me off that people won't accept that its not a WWI game. At least the multiplayer. You bring it up and everyone goes, "LUL, ITS a BATTELFIELD GAME ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO be realistic dummy, GO PLAY A MILSIM."
Everytime, without fail.
>>146586832
If you watch the gameplay, its effectively a WWII game.
>>146586841
MECS are very good, pick up at least one for the EMP burst vs. sectopods. Definitely get your foundry, has very good upgrades for your troops. Scan for EXALT like 7 days after a covert OP mission, I'm 99% certain about that.
>>146587139
Its not like they couldn't have done something interesting with the setting and stayed fairly casual but they've just made it WW2 in regards to gunplay and vehicles
>>146587139
>It just really pisses me off that people won't accept that its not a WWI game. At least the multiplayer. You bring it up and everyone goes, "LUL, ITS a BATTELFIELD GAME ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO be realistic dummy, GO PLAY A MILSIM."
Reddit had a pretty big fight on this the other day, the end result being some of them hope that there's a hardcore mode where everyone and their mother gets a bolt action.
>>146586695
Xenonauts was... alright, and the psionics bait in the tech tree was mildly amusing. But everything it does, FMP open xcom does better.
Speaking of FMP, railguns are love, railguns are life.
>>146587274
>Reddit had a pretty big fight on this the other day
Reddit fights are fun as the side deemed "wrong" is punished with downvotes so they can only post once an hour.
>>146587139
How should I build a MEC? What class should I chop/what rank?
>>146586290
>>a fantatstic WWII shooter.
OK I keep hearing this joke but why does it...
>>146587139
>>If you watch the gameplay, its effectively a WWII game.
... Really?Have more Xenonauts].
>>146587728
Just watch it, everyone has SMGs, hipfires LMGs and the ww1 tanks move like modern tanks.
Its not a joke, its just a WW2 game with WW1 models.
>>146587274
While I'm glad some people are actually discussing it. I don't think its going to be a bad game, but usually I only pick up more then one title from a franchise If I think they bring something new to the table or I am really committed and love the game (Only really Dark Souls, XCOM, and the old Command and Conquers for me personally), and initially I had some hope BF1 would be something new, but those hopes have been dashed.
>>146587272
>>146587274
Also they were hyping the melee weapons as a big deal, which would make sense for some trench warfare and all the bolt actions, but now everyone is just going to be running around with "WWI" smgs and lmgs and they are going to be about as useful as swords in XCOM2.
>>146587728
Instead of bolt actions they have smgs and lmg galore with semi-auto rifle in the mix. Also tanks are there which makes no sense as they never had a big impact in WWI whatsoever. So the gunplay defaults to WWII and decidedly not WWI.Thanks, I do like the concept are they have.
>>146587728
>autoguns as far as the eye can see
>semi auto guns for the non automatic classes
>no trenches warfare
>isn't actually taking place on the main area of operation
>actually having some kind of titan gameplay from 2142
>FUCKING ARMORED VEHICLES.
I could go on. They should've gone for 2143, but again, i'm scared of what they would've done to it
>>146587981
They needed to appeal to redditors and people who decided they wanted a historical game so instead of an interesting 2143 we get reskinned bf4
>>146587915
>old Command and Conquers

>>146587883
>>146587915

Figured out that no real bolt action and the like was part of it but did not expect the Tanks to be that apparent in the gameplay.

please continue your battlefield conversation though, i hope it turns into a memestorm.
>>146588907
If you have a powerful enough phone, go Android. Otherwise try the Vita version.
>>146588886
It's possible I'm misinformed, but I did read through one (just one, quite a while ago too) WWI textbooks and from what I remember the tanks just weren't reliable enough to make a huge impact. They broke down to easily and just weren't that effective. Changes in assault tactics and tried and true artillery bombardment paired with improved communication so infantry could assault entrenched positions immediately afterwards are what led to successful offensive operations.
Tanks were a new concept at the end of the war that didn't have time to be refined and have a big impact.
That's my understanding, but I would be happy to read up and why my perception on this might be wrong. As far as I know, all they had going for them was shock value as troops hadn't seen anything like them before.
going out like a champ.
>>146588886
Not him but by the time they started using them effectively the war was won. Germany was starting to starve due to the blockade and the Central powers weren't doing that great while the Entente powers had figured out effective trench warfare tactics.
Tanks had effects on a few battles but little overall impact on the war.
Am i a psycho for laughing at this

>>146588886
>>146589296
Well, they do say that Hitler become obsessed with tanks during his time in WWI so he kept on pushing for bigger and better tanks all the way during WWII instead of concentrating on a few designs so they did have an impact of sorts.
So its xenonauts an xcom clone?what features does it change/add/remove to/from the classic xcom formula?
>>146591720
Clones a bit harsh. Never played it, but I know it was an attempt by fans to make a faithful reboot of the original. I'm sure the person posting the screenshots can fill you in on actual details.
>>146590685
Good stuff.
>>146591720
Supposedly an 'updated' version of the original X-COM but it kind of loses steam towards the end.
>>146592000
>but it kind of loses steam towards the end.
You already said its a version of Xcom.
Flamethrower is fun
holy fuck the attrition mod is ridiculous
reinforcements come in even when you're concealed? jesus
>>146592865
Flamethrowers are pretty sweet. They have like 20 round auto fire right? Guarantees a dead ayyy every-time up close.
>>146591720
just going to list what i can remember in random order:
- it's set in 1979 so the flavor is a little different, more cold war esque
- civilians can have guns and that can lead to some getting out of your chair and cheering situations when you see they've killed the sectoid-equivalent alien menacing their barn
- airgame is different and a manually controlled minigame that quickly gets old in my opinion, though there is an autoresolve option
- there are shields, though they're only useful in the beginning
- you can open ufo doors when standing one tile to the left or right
- you can call airstrikes on crashed ufos instead of going to the battlescape if you can't be arsed to deal with "crash site 323"
- ufos will attack your equivalent of the skyranger, pic related
tbc...
>>146587682
Bump for interest
>>146587682
>>146594346
Oh sorry I wasn't paying attention. Umm, not too knowledgeable. I think Heavy's are fine to make MECs early because their aim per rank sucks, but other classes your should wait longer so they get their classes aim progression instead of the worse MEC aim per level.
Technically I think every class in vanilla is fine for a MEC.
>>146593379
>>that quickly gets old in my opinion
Maybe but the BGM is nice.
>>146591720
- there's a suppressive fire mechanic where a unit's bravery influenced whether they will lose TUs when shot at
- imo there's a slightly more HFY feel as (legit spoilers)the top tier weapon is human made, and humanity doesn't possess the capability for psionics, suggesting they don't need it to defeat the alien forces
- one of the alien races regens health after every round, which is really fucking annoying in early game as they're the second race you meet
- similarity to original x-com: stats are leveled up by using them, too many other things to list, it is a true spiritual successor
- similarity to the firaxis games: promotions are based on combat xp,predator armor lets you walk through walls, god i fucking hate this trope
overall, i played it when it came out and never finished it. something about it just didn't hold my interest as well as open x-com. i wish i could pin down why.
>>146594827
that's true. if you like airgame and are a plane nerd, you will love all the different faithful options that are included.
>>146593346
No,just 8 rounds like shown in the webm
>>146594827
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTCw8GQNEj4
It really is
this comic is a joke about how there's too many aliens on the first mission for the size of the ship.
>>146591720
oh, forgot some things:
- start with 8 soldiers, max skyranger upgrade is 12
- there's a full cover system
- different weapons have different reaction fire penalties/bonuses, shotguns have a bonus whereas sniper rifles have a penalty
- you can end missions by securing the ufo (staying in it for 5 turns), meaning you don't have to hunt that last fucker in a closet
i'm sure i'll think of some other things too
>>146595818
>you can end missions by securing the ufo
That's nice. Perosnally I'm a fan of new XCOM's visual/audio wave cues since they apply to every mission. Really wish they would mod that into openxcom somehow.
>>146594524
Hm, i have a pair of snipers that are doing god's work (one snapshot double tap, the other squadsight In the Zone), maybe i'll chop the double tapper
>>146596332
Which one has disabling shot? You'll regret losing them.
>>146596236
i can take a crack at it in a bit, currently hooked on piratez but i definitely want that feature too.
forgot to mention, xenonauts is quite moddable, and there's a community mod pack that is open x-com status (i wouldn't recommend playing the game without the mod, in other words).
>>146596889
Oh that's cool, I was thinking of picking it up to experience it, also a bit excited about xenonauts2
>>146596889
>i can take a crack at it in a bit, currently hooked on piratez but i definitely want that feature too.
That would be totally awesome. Searching the last ayy with Time units is horrendous. I hate losing people, but safe movement usually goes out the door when I just want the mission to be over.
>OpenXcom
>Very large ufo landed at end of first month
Intercept it or let it be a terror mission?
>>146597365
>Very large ufo
Those don't spawn terror missions. Its just a landed ufo, assault it at your own peril.
>>146596510
Neither, they're all training roulette
>>146599065
Oh ok, then go for it.
>>146597050
i would certainly recommend it for 10 bucks. consulting steamdb, that's the lowest it's been.
two possible implementations of the sound indicator that i can see:
1) firaxis style, you get a popup of what direction the nearest(?) alien is in after 2-3 (configurable) turns without alien contact
2) after possibly every enemy turn, display a visual cue of any aliens that just moved and are within the sound detection radius of a soldier. i guess i would center the camera on the soldier that can best hear the unit, display the cue, then move to the next soldier, etc.
in either option, i think cues should be able to be toggled on or off the screen with a hotkey. i wasn't too fond of how the alien or meld cues would disappear in the firaxis games given how often they seized your camera, sometimes you didn't get it back in time to get a good look at the direction they were pointing.
will try #1 first as it seems simpler to implement.
>>146597365
probably would recommend. remember that aliens can shoot down at you through the grav lifts.
>>146599264
Yeah number 1 sounds best. A toggle would be fantastic too.
I was just looking at Xeno on steam so I'm gonna pick it up.
So while we're discussing xcom like games, who here's played the afterblanks? Afterlight was fucking amazing imo, the whole feel of seeing mars terraformed and the gradually encroaching beastmen was pretty great
>tfw the first alchemists show up
That was the first time in 10 years I experienced fear like og xcom chrysallids. Those grenades are fucking brutal before you get decent armour.
>>146600182
I liked Aftershock more than I liked Aftermath and Afterlight.
>alchemists
>bad
You ain't seen shit until the Matriarchs show up
>>146600554
Matriarchs are wimps, they're fast and hit hard but turn up well into the late game where you have good gear and well trained men and focus fire can rapidly deal with them, alchemists first show up when you're barely into armoured suits and can chain knockdown your entire squad from out of LoS while puncturing all their suits

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU
>>146603304
We had some plane shitposting a week or two back and some anon shitposted about how the f-35 was his favourite modern aircraft. For the record the SU35 is best girl
>>146603581
Those anons are being dumb. You want to satellite rush. Go for engineers at every opportunity, building sats and sat uplinks and interceptors for satellited areas. You want as many sats as fast as possible. This gives you shitloads of income, scientists, and engineers, getting your endgame snowball rolling faster. While you satellite rush, rush lasers for everyone, ignoring everything else. This ensures your firepower is adequate for any situation. After that, get your interceptors upgraded, then armor. You should be pretty set after that.
>>146603954
pff
subpar
>>146603954
That was me, but I really was kidding.
>>146604069
>Those anons are being dumb.
I'm pretty sure you just said what everyone else said in more detail.
>>146604217
Don't you be saying things like that about the sexiest modern aircraft.
>>146604243
Yes but some things should not even be joked about.
>>146603762
>the f-35 is bad
"No"
At everything but air to air it's strictly superior to every combat plane to ever compete with it. It can look literally through the cockpit in every direction, share radar and data from multiple sources, feed targeting information to 4th gen fighters using them as missile boats, has better passive sensors than the F-22, a single engine which is more reliable than two (read up on f-16 vs f-15 engine reliability), and a slew of other features to go alongside those.
>>146604309
You forgot the minor detail that it cost stupid money and doesn't actually work.
>>146604243
>those anons are just being dumb
But one said to choose countries with high panic. That's not how sat rushing works. You need the engineers to build sats to actively reduce panic instead of relying on random missions. The aim should be 2 to 4 sats per month, not 1 per month. Sats should be saved for panicking countries until the end of the month, but launched right before the council report to maximize your snowball, even if there are no high panic countries.
>>146604590
>cost stupid money
Yet again
"No"
1 trillion is the total cost for 5000 airframes and all spare parts and gas for all of them and service over their entire 50 year lifespan
>doesn't work
They got the software mostly finished to the tune of 100% combat readiness at pic related
>>146604764
>1 trillion
>not stupid money
Also it wasn't just stupid money for America, it was stupid money for NATO allies that bought into Lockheed Martins scam.
>>146604594
Yeah I don't disagree with what your saying.
>>146604309
>>146604764
>the f-35 is bad
Yes. Its subpar, not even combat ready and its cost is already moving towards exceeding the f-22 program. The f-35 is unlikely to even see the light of day in any meaningful manner.
>At everything but air to air
This is the entire problem, its supposed to replace everything. Its supposed to somehow win against other air Superiority fighters. But it can't.
>50 year lifespan
heh.
>software
Oh yeah I've heard that their 2 million lines of code is working "flawlessly."
>>146604295
>modernWorry not my nig im just fuckin with ya
>>146604937
You know, the projections are that that's at worst a third of what it would cost to maintain the current 4th generation fleet, right? Tangentially, people said the exact same shit about the F-35 that they did about the F-16.
>>146605135
>subpar
How
>not combat ready
But it is? The last exercise was a full series of simulations
>at everything but air to air
The only current or projected aircraft that can compete is the F-22
How is this a problem
>software
Yeah, it's going along on schedule and actually had an 100% working rate which is fucking incredible at the last big exercise
>>146605216
The solution was to make a 5th gen airframe that isn't shit at A2A and not to make it go crazily over budget, behind schedule and have a new fatal flaw discovered every other month
>>146605213
FUCK OFF REEEEEEI don't understand how they made such a sexy aircraft, its like the culmination of aesthetics. The Russians are great at aircraft aesthetics.
>>146605417
It's not shit at a2a
It destroys every other craft including arguably the F-22 because of its magic sensor fusion across multiple platforms
It's about normal for "US DOD over budget behind schedule"ness
>>146605771

>>146606432
No ones been blown out on either side because no ones provided sources for anything they've said because that would take effort.
>>146606432
Muh boy!
>>146605921
It not being shit at A2A is based on the magical idea that every engagement will be firing missiles from BVR with the opposing force sitting there with no countermeasures or jamming. In exercises against the superior F22 Eurofighters were capable of scoring kills by adapting their tactics so they were inside a range they had the advantage in, we'll see the exact same with the F35 except it has even worse WVR performance.
>>146606761
>eurofighters
>>146602232
It's a Big Sky out there.
>>146606672
All the sources contradict each other because at this point its all theorycrafting based on scant released information and marketing materials. I could find a source saying its incredible in A2A and another saying it'll be shit. At this point all we know is its gone stupidly over budget, stupidly behind schedule and has had a stupid amount of issues.
>>146606853
Yeah, you understand what I meant.
>>146606761
In exercises that started with the eurofighter at an advantage, kek.
Every single exercise where the F-22 gets let off the chain, they're never spotted or identified. Point me one example that wasn't specifically run WVR where the F-22 had a poor kill ratio
Also rabbit hole here we go

>>146607062
It's not stupidly over budget. It just gets shit because the media threw a shitfit at hearing how much a fighter jet will cost
It's not stupidly behind schedule, it's already on IOC. It hasn't had a stupid amount of issues, either, the software's just not complete because it's arguably the most complex military software to ever exist. Name the "issues" in specific and i'll give you sources refuting them
>>146606853
>>146607062
>>eurofighters
Sorry but I did not follow.
>>146607104
>WASHINGTON — Software glitches have plagued the F-35 in recent months, but operators said they noticed a marked improvement during a June deployment where the aircraft did not experience any shutdowns.
>The F-35 joint program office’s top official disclosed in April that the fighter jet was struggling with problems associated with the 3i software planned for use when the Air Force fields the planes later this year. Pilots reported that they had trouble booting up their jets, and would have to restart key systems on the plane every three to four hours after sensors shut off without warning.
Maybe I just have bad reading comprehension. But I'm not sure why this is supposed to impress me.
>>146607104
Its a good thing in real life the opposing force will always be on an even footing and won't be using anything it can get for an advantage, that would be unsportsmanlike. I can't even find the ROE for the exercise where the kills were scored and what I can find is contradictory from air forces and pilots trying to sound good.

Also the Pentagon criticised the F35 development issues. Its "on schedule" because they keep changing the schedule because its behind.

The entire USAF is designed around having BETTER jamming, BETTER detection, BETTER electronic warfare in general, than anyone else. The areas you claim the typhoon used to attain parity with the F-22 are the areas in which the F-35 and F-22 are most dominant
>>146607623
Im just being a shitter its a fine plane
>>146607934
It doesn't matter how strong your jamming, detection and EW is if the opposing forces EW platform is strong enough (which for the main Nato allies it is) to let them get within the range your aircraft is not built for.

Your comprehension is poor. In your quote it makes it appear as though problems present in april were solved by june.

No seriously, the article just states they fixed software glitches that were causing their systems to shutdown randomly. What am I actually supposed to get from the article? That the plane's features don't randomly turn off any more? That's great, but like I said, not impressive.
I didn't cherry pick anything, that's just the first two paragraphs telling what the article is covering.

That's a pretty ridiculous statement. History is anything but predictable. People have predicted multiple times that large scale conflicts are impossible/can't happen/won't happen in the near future, and then they are wrong every-time.
>>146610349
>tfw strong woman leader of the next global empire never
>>146610349
Its not just that large scale conflicts are impossible, its that NATO (and mostly America's) arsenal is so far ahead of anything else that you can safely rule out needing to spend 1.5 trillion dollars on a new multirole fighter program.
>>146610289
See, that's what you'd think, but it's not just code, it's code integrated into a complex machine. So not only do you have to test the code itself, you've also got try it out once you think it's ready to discover any more problems that need to be fixed. If it was just a program, sure, but it's a program integrated into a gigantically convoluted machine
>>146610567
Do you not understand that what propelled the USA so far ahead WAS multitrillion dollar defense programs?
>>146610664
Thank you for explaining my job to me. Once again, that type of bug should not be occurring this late into the development cycle especially not with the standard of coders that you would expect to be working on it.
>>146610776
What propelled the USA so far ahead was the aftermath of the 2 world wars and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
>>146610881
I find it funny that you claim the aftermath of wars caused the disparity. Namely because it did, but it enabled the USA to spend those trillions on defense programs that nobody else could. Which is in turn what kept them ahead of the rest of the world. So I think we're both right on that one.
Also, you can say it's your job all day, but it's clearly a bug that wasn't found during software testing before integration into the airframe. There's no way around it, it had to be found when actually trialling the craft. I fail to see how this is a strike against the program when it was fully anticipated.

Just smoke your ramps man. Doors are cool but they slow you you down. I've been using the Bonventura for more then 3 years in-game and I have had like no casualties in the first turn. That thing deploys all your troops instantly its fantastic.
Thread reminder that smoke grenades cause stun damage over time; so see if you can install a gas mask mod for Openxcom. An alternative is just taking advantage of the smoke cover and moving.
>>146620726
Spitfires are nice and all anon, but the de Havilland Mosquito is where true perfection lies.

Smoke damage is takes awhile to affect your troops and medkits usually have stimulants which reduce stun damage. I'd opt for stimulants as smoke armor or gas masks usually have stat penalties.

So is Xenonauts good if i like openxcom?,is vanilla good enough or does it have overhaul mods?
I was experimenting a bit and made it so that the default firing animation is the fanfire animation, which means that whenever you shoot it shoots 3 times really fast. Unfortunately now when you use fanfire, it just shoots 3 times, once per shot, which looks weird when you shoot 3 times with every normal shot, so you'd think fanfire would shoot 9 times, which would look equally as ridiculous.
I'm not sure if i should keep it like that or just keep the animations as normal.

Yeah, the art style is really aseptic except for backgrounds used in the base which I really liked. (It was also really cool how the base background art changed as your tech level progressed. I'll post an example.) It's too bad the battlescape sprites are so.. meh.
It sounds pretentious to say I didn't like a game because of the art style, and that wasn't the only reason, but it sure helped. I guess the cheesy 90s pixel art of OpenX-Com made me forgive it more. OpenX-Com seems to be a vibrant, alive world, while Xenonauts comes across really gritty with no joy at all. Which, hey, is realistic in the event of an alien invasion, but it doesn't make for the most engagingfungame experience.
