You only need 60 obsidian and 30 silk. It's about as good as gold armour but obsidian is easier to find than gold.
Plus you can use bombs to mine it, unlike fossil armour, so in theory you can get it on day one, making eye and eater/Brian fights easier
Alternatively, if you get an early reaver shark, you can get build a hellevator, get obsidian armour on the way so you can mine hellstone safely, allowing you to skip the entirety of pre-hardmode. Sure you can do it with no armour if you're good, but you'll probably get some obsidian anyway do might as well use it to make cheesing easier
Basically obsidian armour is shit but you don't need to fight anything to get it and it's a decent setup for hell rush cheese

I hate building in this game. Building housing, building arenas. I feel like the default should be automatic, and how it is now should be an option for when you want to take more time.
I want an NPC management mod to handle such a thing, and I'd try to do it myself but apparently tModLoader doesn't have features for editing menus, and since I'm not an amazing coder I can't figure out how to do it without waiting for the feature to be added and documented.
Bleh. It's really bad for things like invasions, when there are so many nearby caves for them to spawn in and not walk into your lava trap. and then you spend all this time measuring out the number of blocks away from player spawn to the sides and below that mobs can spawn, plus some room to move around to collect loot, and then filling it all in with hundreds of blocks of dirt.
... I've played this game so much and yet I'm still not sure what a good setup is. I realized putting everything at default spawn is kinda bad because NPCs and sunflowers reduce/stop spawns so your mob grinders do nothing when there's no invasion. ... well, I guess by the time you get lava you don't need to be killing slimes.
Still... then in expert mode I'm dying to king slime and then getting all my NPCs killed back at base.
Maybe I should make a bed high in the air. Wait, does the pirate invasion... yup, it goes to original spawn. I wonder how that interacts with where a new spawn or present player location is. I guess it follows the player up to a certain distance away from original spawn.

how do you get mobs into hoiks? the info on hoiks seems limited, especially since it might have changed since 1.3.1.
Will mobs spawn in places where there is inactive blocks? Will they spawn in mid-air, or only above solid blocks?
I wanted to set up hoiks for invasions or maybe other mob grinders so they go straight into a lava trap and die faster instead of having to wait for them to walk all the way to you. Also I wonder if the amount of space changes the ... no, I guess it wouldn't change the number of mobs spawned. I guess it's better to limit it rather than to maximize the areas they can spawn.
