can someone mathematically formalize the fastest any% speedrun? i don't know anything about automata, but i'm guessing someone would say something like there's a certain state of a machine (or set of states) that we would define as the beginning of the speedrun and there's another certain state (or set of states). the fastest speedrun would be the shortest sequence of states that take you from the beginning to the end so there's always a shortest speedrun?

No, only a small amount of games would have a run that is the fastest, since often multiple methods or inputs lead to the same result, e. g. shielding while backwalking in OoT which usually has no effect. So since there are multiple runs with the same length, there can be no single fastest run. But there can of course be a fastest speedrun:
Let n, x, y be natural numbers.
A binary input is an x-tuple over {0,1}.
A game is a pair of a function that assigns each pair of binary input and y-tuple a y-tuple and a natural number.
A speedrunnable game is a 3-tuple of a game and 2 game(2)-tuples over {0, 1}.

I tried running Tomb Raider once but then looked up other runs and people were using glitches and I immediately stopped caring and gave us.
I just wanted to play fast. But other people were breaking the game and looking up routes and glitches on google.

say there's this game. the game has been out for several years, and has established a reputation as a great speedgame. there's a bunch of cool tricks, sequence breaks, optimization, and little to no cutscenes or RNG. the run lasts about an hour or so, and at the several times it's been at marathons, it's had enormous positive reception. several of the top runners are some of the best known in the community.
now, imagine if someone found a way to beat the game in 15 minutes. but, to set up said trick, you had to play the game virtually natural route up to a certain point with little to no other glitches, including several cutscenes. the early game is widely regarded by most people who play the game as incredibly boring, and love the fact the speedrun skips it, but the speedrun would now have it but little else. worse, once you get 15 minutes in, you have to actually do the trick, which not only has a 1/10 chance to even be possible, but is frame perfect with no useful audio or visual cue, and leads you directly to the credit. there's no rhyme or reason to how the trick works; you're on one end of it, some inexplicable shit happens, and the credits are rolling. it also turns the credits music into ear-rape, and doesn't do much better to the credit visuals.
