in the mod people where avoidant, tried to interact, stalker-ish, hermits, sometimes ganged up shouting "one of us" over voicechat and so on
ofcourse there was PvP town and sniper hill with a dozen duped bodies about, but by the time the standalone had come out (it was quite lacking in content, features and so on) everything revolved around getting some gear and killing as many as possible like it is an all out deathmatch.

Try getting in on a whitelist RP server. I play on the dayz colony and, while there is some KoS, nobody gets super bent out of shape about it and people seem more open to interaction. I can't speak for other whitelist servers, but the application for colony is essentially "are you a hacker and not 12".
I don't expect the SA to discourage lone wolfing/kos until predatory animals are out. Once there is something more threatening than the piss poor zombies I have hope things will mellow out to some degree.
