Understand the way that alignment affects how manpower is contributed by your guys. IIRC it's neutral has their highest guile/fight/magic level squared, lawful is just their highest utility skill, and chaos is their second highest skill period.
Labor 2 doubles your manpower from that character. Get Bato to Labor 2.

Adding custom sprites
This game also includes sprite modding support! Any character in the game with a name can be modded. Tips on creating custom sprites are provided with the readme, but I'll provide an explanation too.
I recommend using http://www.getpaint.net/index.html to edit sprites. Sprites must be placed in the PCCustom folder. Each one has to be a PNG in 80x64 format with a transparent background. The sprite should be as centered as possible on the bottom; Baako.png is an example. Name the PNG what you want to replace. Any character can be replaced, not just template ones, so for example if you want to change Greave's sprite, just name it Greave.png.
Here's an example I made! You can probably tell what he looks like. If you put this PNG in the PCCustom folder, a character with a name matching the filename will use this sprite instead.
Also: there are a few scenes in the game where the player character, uh...loses their clothes. These don't happen often, so it's not necessarily something to worry about, but if you wish to replace the nude sprite for the intended character as well, put another custom sprite PNG in the Nude folder with the character's name. The game won't break if nothing is there, it just uses the default sprite instead.

1. Ritualist - You can attempt Weave challenges.
2. Lambent - Personal light level increase dramatically.
3. Alchemy - You create a potion when you complete a Weave challenge with a "Good" or better result.
4. Magic Bags - You carrying load increase by one. [Stacks with Mule and Extra Pocket]
5. Mind Speak - You can attempt negotiation with any creatures regardless of intelligence. Increase your manpower contribution by an amount equal of your level times your band size.
6. Telekinetic - Your reach outside of combat increase dramatically.

On second thought... Matsutaka isn't as helpful as I thought. Sure, he deals a fuck-ton of damage and I slapped a sapphire on him so he applies pain and nexus in a 2-square reach. But his alignment is neutral, which makes his manpower increase with his utility score2. All his points are in fight and a little in hunt, while putting points in labour feels like a waste. This means that his utility score will always be shit. If I got an ashlord, which also has natural painstrike and the inspiring party-buff, but with a chaotic alignment, his manpower increases with his second-highest skill, which can be anything. Defensive stats like robust, slippery, and solid mean very little to me, since I'm having all damage focused on my iron golem.

Customizing Character Sprites
Any character with a unique name can have a fully customized sprite.
Create a 80 x 64 png file with hard alpha (no soft fading). Try to keep the character well-centered within the space, and aligned to the bottom of the frame.
Give the png file the same name as the character whose sprite you want to replace, and place it into the "PCCustom" folder in your Bastard Bonds install directory.
The mod is temporary, and will only work for as long as the file exists in the PC Custom folder. To revert the sprite's appearance, just remove the file or rename it.
See "Baako.png" for an example of proper format and placement.
This works with any creature or character, as long as the names match.
If you intend to use a mod with your main character, you may also want to create a nude version of the sprite for use in select cutscenes. Simply place a png of the same name inside the NUDE folder in PCCustom to enable this. If you do not provide a nude version of your modded sprite, the standard version will be used in its place.

Anyone ever try drawing up a custom nude sprite for a character without creating a custom clothed sprite? In theory there's no reason it shouldn't work, but I worry the game might not bother to check for a custom nude sprite if it's not using a custom sprite beforehand.
