Learning how to write and speak consumes way more time than learning how to read, and neither of those skills are very useful when you aren't going to be interacting with any natives. Even in Japan, the use of IMEs has reduced the necessity to know how to write.
And that's why my sister who has studied Japanese last year for a mandatory language requirement still can't read よつばと!, while I've already passed her level of knowledge within a couple months.

It's mainly because traditional language courses focus on shit you won't need to know at all, unless you're actually going to be moving to a country where that language is spoken, in which case you'd be better off hiring a private tutor so you don't fuck yourself over by practicing with noobs who will also butcher the pronunciation of words.
The majority of the interactions someone in the west is going to have with Japanese material is through anime, manga, and VNs, which don't need time-consuming production skills.

I'm trying to replay Majikoi S but I keep getting this error.
I was able to play it back in February 2016 but now it doesn't work. Googling it I found that some windows update causes it to happen but I turned off updates back in 2015 and haven't downloaded a single update since then. I tried reinstalling it and didn't work. I tried deleting it then used CCleaner to find any registry associated with it and delete it (didn't find anything) then installed it, did not work
I also downloaded the prepatched version of Majikoi A-1 but decided to install the DirectX inside the folder. I wanted to uninstall it but it does not show up in my Control Panel when I want to uninstall. It also asked me if it wanted to port over the config to A-1 and I clicked Yes and chose Majikoi S. I'm not sure if those caused the problems

Koi Choco is decent. The worst part about Choco is that the main heroine is by far the shittiest girl and you have to do her route first. AND they guilt trip you about her in just about every other route. Worth a read if you can get over that.
Last Resort was boring as fuck in my opinion. Everything ends up exactly as you'd expect and nothing really interesting happens. It is short as hell and has decent high resolution art though.

It's all about the author. There are some moege authors who just write a ton of shitty games, but there are some that write absolute gems with competent routes. Rather than giving up moege, you should test play a lot to find the proper authors. My recommendations for good moege authors are Orgel, Sakakibara Taku and Insider. It's not that bad. 99% of what you see is the same stuff, so you will learn to read fast and "fluently" relatively soon. It's when you get real uptight about properly parsing the 1% that the vocab and kanji rears its ugly head. For example, I picked up Hanachirasu awhile ago and read through it at a nice pace. However, whenever the name of a certain style or position or strike was mentioned, it used kanji I've never seen in years of reading. If I got concerned about that 1% (not hanachirasu in particular), then yeah Japanese would be absurd and time consuming. Even natives struggle with the 1% (googling the 1% brings up Japanese people asking for help) - heck, go to a physics/math/whatever page yourself and witness how hard it is to read. But because I just relax, ignore the 1%, and enjoy the 99%, reading fluently (and ergo, Japanese itself) is not a big deal or something absurdly time consuming. For reference, I have around 500 hours in anki, but I have 250 hours in Terraria. Not something to despair over or bemoan the length of.

Cyberpunk bartending game. It's essentially a VN in that the vast majority of your game is spent listening to conversations between characters and the MC, but the choice system is unique - instead of simply selecting an option from a list, you serve people drinks and the type of drink you serve influences how they react and how their story plays out. You could give them what they want, or you could knock them out with heaps of booze, ignore them, give them the wrong drink.
