Nah, Kirkiri (the engine) actually works just like you said, the patch isn't installed it just exists in the folder. It will (probably) corrupt your *existing* saves if you switch from 1.0 to 1.2 *after* saving though. I don't know why but it happened to me.

How many of you started reading VNs, manga, or watching anime solely because the girls were so adorable? I wasn't one of those , and I actually don't have any problems with that. I have lots of fond memories of moe-heroines. However, as I've dug deeper and deeper into the VN universe I came to realize... all the heroines were beginning to melt together into one big moe blob inside my back-brain. This is because very few heroines stand out enough to remain distinct in my mind from all the other, similar heroines inside my brain.
Do you want to know how many heroines remain distinct in my brain from the last three years of playing VNs? Just thirty-three... and that is from well over seven hundred heroines whose routes I've completed in that time. Frankly, even if I find an archetypical heroine interesting for a single playthrough, it is a rare heroine who makes an impression strong enough to retain her individuality in the collective VN memory of my under-psyche.
How many people do you actually remember in real life as a distinct human being without meeting them every day (or at least with some frequency)? Even if you see 2D as a real world, do you seriously think someone who has gone so far down the road of the VN otaku as I and some others in the community have to remember every single heroine they've encountered?
I'm fortunate. I have a natural gift for storing episode memory, so if I start replaying a VN, I generally remember the heroines and their paths almost immediately. However, expecting me to remember yet another tsundere osananajimi amongst hundreds of others off the top of my head after a year is fundamentally ridiculous, in my opinion. This doesn't necessarily mean the VN in question is bad... it just means the heroine is one I've seen dozens of times before, placed in different situations with a different appearance.

... I can safely say as a translator that all that is due to translating being time consuming and boring. The vast majority of translators are at all times hating the work they're doing yet continuing for the good of all mankind. Translators are always walking the line of benevolence and the sheer tedium of translating. All inevitably fall to the tedium, and when that happens, an announcement must be made. How can they tell the thousands of people DEPENDING on you for translations that you are stopping? They just can't bring themselves to say, "Well I really don't want to do this, it's not fun and it's consuming my time". It's too shameful. And thus, they look for an excuse, and ANY excuse to stop is good enough for most, even fabricated ones. It's like Shounen Bat from Paranoia agent. Push the blame onto an excuse - life drama, accidents, etc - and escape from the hell that is translating.
In short, it's a combination of translating being sucky, time consuming work and people wanting to save face when quitting.

I barely remember the character's actual personality when looking back upon them, I remember their actions and their effects.
Apart from that they are distinguished by genuinely unique items in their character design like a certain voice or a change that occurs to them.
I remember faces, not names. It normally takes me a couple hours to put the face to the name in my head and as such remembering people I see is easy, remembering people I hear about is much harder.
I do not remember the amount of heroines I actually recognise or continue to think about therefore the amount that I have forgotten must be almost all of them.
As I've said, I'll remember the story for what it was and the effect it had on me. I do not remember the characters themselves in detail as in the end the story is what counts. To me that is, I'm sure characters are the most important part of the novel to others.
