As soon as your villager moves out, if they haven't been picked out by anyone, they get sent to the 'void'.
They stay there until you go into someone's town, thus your void gets cleared and that someone has your villager that moved out.
The OP pretty much explains it all on "What is the void?".

When a villager moves out without being adopted, they go into the "void", a kind of limbo where they can be passed on if someone without a full town visits your town. The void gets cleared if you visit someone with a full town. So if you want to make sure Miranda gets adopted, you can keep her in your void and avoid clearing your void until you find her a new home.

Are there only eight wolves in the amiibo cards for Animal Crossing? I think there are two wolves per series and I just want to make sure I got them all. You have a couple options.
>Your villager is in boxes
On the day that they're supposed to move out, they'll be "in boxes". If you visit them, their furniture will be packed up into cardboard boxes and they'll only talk about moving.
In this state, your friend can visit your town and talk to the villager to invite him/her to the town.
>Your villager has moved and is in your void
Make sure that you don't visit anyone else, have anyone visit you, or streetpass anyone until you can meet up with your friend. In this state, either visit your friend's town or have your friend visit your town. Doing this ought to transfer the contents of your void (the villager that moved) to your friend'd town.

Animal Crossing contains a lot of good life lessons. I think it teaches people, especially younger people about making the most of what you've got, and about change, and in a small way about loss. Things change in the game, characters you like move away etc.
Will Smith shares this sentiment, judging by his Tweets about playing the game with his kids Jaden, Tray, and Willow Smith. I don't believe he would encourage new players to use exploits like a map editor as a short cut to get what they want.

Animal Crossing bears much in common with a farmville-eque smartphone game, yet it predates the smartphone and the free2play business model
AC doles out it's content very slowly. After 30+ days of gameplay, you might have unlocked the island if you're lucky.
Since there's no way to speed this up legitimately, many players resort to time traveling and defeating the mechanics of the game in order to make things happen faster.
These are the same people who pick up the game, play it for 20-30 days, get their first house upgrade, and then drop the game because, in their eyes, the game offers no more entertainment value.
This might sound like an edge case, but this is the reality of most people who bought and played New Leaf.
Most people who stick with New Leaf are either tumblrinas or 20-somethings who grew up with the original gamecube title, which was released during a time when kids' attention spans were much longer than 9 seconds.
At the end of the day, New Leaf was marketed as a kids game, and it doesn't work as a kids game.
Kids are much more impatient today than they were back in 2001, and if animal crossing was being introduced today, it wouldn't even make it past the idea stage, not in it's current form, anyway.

I don't use "mule" players for my paths. But the developers most certainly intended for you to have up to three other players living in your town. And they most certainly intended for you to place patterns on the ground, since that's an option you have with patterns.
That leaves twenty-four additional pattern slots to use, and if you're going to place some on the ground it makes sense to make them look nice.

I had stopped playing for several weeks and couldn't remember if I had saved on a day when I had received a moveout ping that day.
I traveled back to the last day I stopped playing and skipped ahead every day until a villager pings me to moveout so I could reject it and get back to the present day without danger of moveouts.
If this is a period of longer than 2 weeks, your villagers will stop pinging you until you talk to them again. I'll call this rekindling.
Rekindling only works if your villager is at home, or walking outside, and doesn't count if they're at the store, or fishing, or whatever.
So as it turns out I didn't actually rekindle rosie correctly and she simply didn't ping me about moving out.
I also decided to stop fighting the game mechanics because it's really not worth going out of my way to do it, I'll get another peppy eventually.

If you haven't played in a while what you need to do is start a new character.
Once you get off the train see if anyone has moved away. Also check the villager's in houses to make sure no one is in boxes.
If everyone is fine then you're good to go and can quit out and load your main.
If everyone is NOT fine you need to go back to the last day you played. Preferably using the 3DS internal clock.
Get the ping from whoever moved and deny them.
Now you immediately time travel back to the current day. Do NOT go in short spurts or day by day.
With this no one should have a pending move out so everything should be fine.
But if you're still worried you can start a new character and check again just to be safe.
