You're right about the last point though to a point. But Archie needs the money and Sega officially endorses them, so the comic does exist, and people like em and buy em, so Sega'll keep paying for it.
The Mega Man comics were god-tier, makes you wonder how the Sonic comic would have turned out if it started out the same date.

And right now it's telling those tales but with an overarching plot and it keeps to the story well enough, with like 1,000 characters added to replace what was lost.

Sonic is the only western comic series I read, so I can't really compare it to Marvel or DC. Best place to start now would be at the reboot, 252 in the main series and 55 in Universe. If you ever want to experience the whole thing just read from the beginning. They take a serious dip in quality starting around issue 50, with a few good stories here and there, but a lot of it is so bad it's fun, if you're into that kind of thing.

I started reading the comics from 160 onwards because that's where Tracy Yardley came onto the book and the art started to consistently decent. That's also when the current writer came on and the quality came up.

Since the reboot the whole skipping to 160 thing isn't the best advice. Start at the reboot since it's relevant now, and if you want to read the old comics you might as well read all of them to get the full experience, or have people tell you specific arcs to read. Because jumping to 160 still requires you to learn a bunch of characters and locations that don't matter anymore, so you might as well just get that knowledge from the comics instead of trying to dig through Mobius Encyclopaedia.

I tend to end up hitting the same path when I play the games, but that's mostly because of how often I've played them. I've just built up habits for certain paths after playing these games my whole childhood and up to now. I didn't even find out how to get the extra life on the top of that one loop in Green Hill Zone until five years ago because I just ever bothered looking for the way to get it.

In a perfect world where Sega actually made a bunch of good Sonic games including good spin-offs, I wouldn't mind if they ended up incorporating the occasional comic character. You don't need to shove everyone and their kitchen sink in, but something like Madonna showing up as Team Dark's G.U.N. contact or Naugus showing up as a recurring magical villain to contrast Eggman wouldn't be a bad thing. If Sega gave a shit they could also do something like test run a character in the comics and gauge fan feedback before putting them in the games, kinda like how they put Cream in Advance 2 and Sonic X before her intended debut in Heroes.

I hated the whole Julian Robotnik House of Kintober Overlander bullshit, but Robotnik had something not even Eggman in his best years had.
Now obviously Eggman is better in almost all ways, but there was something about the way he composed himself. Just the way the fat lump of lard stood up to full height and told Sonic that today, well, "I let you live". The way he giggled at pollution, the way he broke his robots because he was just that way inclined today, the way he wouldn't back down for an all out fist fight with Sonic at the end.
