Pad is fine. Rebind the shoulder buttons to combo inputs that your character of choice uses frequently, or the awkward ones to press such as 1+4 and 2+3
I would just pick a character you like the general feel of then practice their bnb combos until it's muscle memory, then do the combat training mode to learn more about movement, bound status, etc

that's the huge problem with that game, it doesn't know what it wants to be. special moves are easier so it seems like it's trying to appeal to casuals but then, bnb combos are 1f links and there is all kinds of setplay and option selects you have to learn. to play a character at even an intermediate level, you have to training mode boar for hours. it really doesn't make sense.
