Carve is pretty important, it's very good filler when your Owls, Cure, Heal, and Carnivory are on CD and the only reasonable way for you to kill flying targets while soloing. It's good damage.

Yes. Even without any STR investment, carve 10 can do more or less 1000+ damage per hit. If you're gonna use a rod later, you'll need to swap for a blunt or else carve won't do as much damage. You leave it at 1, but people like putting points into it for easier leveling.

For C2 and C3, doesn't really seem worth maxing if you're getting INT over, say, your other skills. MAYBE you could shove points off Ausrine, since some people skil that entirely, but the bit extra damage doesn't sound worth it if you're not going to be pumping points to make Carve decent. The only worthwhile skills are pain barrier and restrain for everyone not named fencer or shinobi.
Fencers can max gung ho attribute without worrying about the def loss at all so its a nice damage boost even later on.
Shinobis clones can use swordsman skills which mean double slash goes from garbage tier to instant boss slayer (provided the boss hasn't already been raped by kunai).
