The first step to getting gud is to learn how to identify how much lag there is.
If there's high lag, choose a high damage weapon. High lag can devolve into who can do the most damage in any single hit.
If there's low lag, you need to learn how to judge spacing properly as well as roll-catch.
It helps to use straight swords or thrusting swords. Those are among the best at roll catching.

Well shit, no wonder only 2 characters are transferring in, as I never played them on the alt account, while I played all of the others. To note, they were also pre-patch.
So after 500 hours and using pretty much every weapon in both PvP and PvE, I'd like to share three of my favorite builds.
First up, my actual favorite.

This is the strength equivalent of a quality build. The main goal is to get maximum benefit to typical high strength weapons. To my surprise, most weapons are about as strong with these stats heavy as they are at 40/40 refined. It's weapon dependant, and usually it's just a tad weaker (for example, caestus loses 20 ish AR). The main benefit of this is you can use strength weapons to their maximum potential, and there's a far bigger difference between 1 handed and two handed.
As a side note, 15 VIT is enough to off-hand a fugs and mainhand a broadsword in brigand armor with havels +2. I recommend trying it sometimes, it's pretty fun.
Okay onto the meme build.

Not much to say about this one. It's a hollow build. It's included because it's great for PvE. You can use whatever you want, but katana's are especially good hollow for some reason. Of course carthus curved sword is a good option for tearing apart PvE.
Let's you use most weapons in the game with little downsides. Some are a little worse than straight 40/40, some are a little better. It's weapon dependent. I don't go lower than 35 luck because I don't like hollow infusing shields.

This was a surprisingly fun one. Enough stats to use most weapons, and you just choose dark or chaos. Dark is better for PvP. For PvE you want both a dark and chaos weapon. Endurance seems a tad low, but you can't really use ultras anyway so it's not so bad. You also get to use some weapons you can't as melee, like moonlight GS.
Well that's it for now. Hope some of you guys give those a shot. Don't let the split damage deter you, that third build is plenty strong.

None of the covenants save for the darkmoonsa and sunbros actually stick to a theme anymore
Aldrich faithful get a dark spell, followed by an off-scaling catalyst that doesn't work with dark spells
Fingers get a ring that's purpose-built for invading (good) and then a luck-scaling casting tool (why?)
Watchdogs get a dex-based Curved GS, and then a greatshield that requires lots of strength
Moundmakers get a dex-based katana and then a high-faith healing pyromancy.
Sunbros actually stick to a theme, and give you a pair of related sun-based miracles, while the dorkmoons just give you their signature buff and a ring that's ideal for buffbuilds.

I know because I used the Sunset Shield for the gladiator event and that only drops from helping Sirris kill her grandfather and I only killed Yhorm after the event was over.
