what's the problem here tovarisch? other than your toaster
I'm a huge fan of enemy unknown and I've played it a ton, and I finally bought XCOM 2 whilst it was on sale.
Am I missing something? This game is impossibly harder. I picked veteran "for people familiar with XCOM" and I got my ass thoroughly kicked. Even when you make seemingly perfect plays you take terrible losses. And then I had to attempt to blow up an avatar base, which is just laughable. How on earth are you supposed to get through a force that outnumbers and outpowers you that much and survive?
Seriously, how are you meant to win this game? Why did they make it so much less fun than Enemy unknown? Or am I missing some important new tactic? I'm genuinely upset that I suck so much. Right now my options are switch to rookie, savescum every turn, or uninstall, and the third is looking like the most appealing.
>>145569529
Most Eu/EW tactics do not work.
>>145569712
I noticed that much, but what are the new options?
I have at least adapted to not having to kill all the ayys every mission and using faceless beacons to run to the evac, but you do have to kill /some/.

>>145570663
I started really enjoying it on the second, the tutorial tech order kind of fucks you over
>>145570741
Oh right, speaking of, is hacking into an officer important? What about the blacksite? I couldn't do either at my level.
Also does not doing the tutorial ruin many cutscenes? I noticed it changed a few at the start and I don't want to miss cool stuff.
>>145569529
I just started too, and I've only lost one soldier across 6 or so missions. I have had a number of serious injuries, however.Fuck those ADVENT mech dudes with their incendiary mortars.
If you haven't built the Guerilla Training School and upgraded your squad size already, then you should do so immediately.
That said, I'm really scared of the Black Site mission. I have a feeling it's going to shrek me.
>>145570838
Have you attacked any avatar bases?
I don't often have deaths, but I have so many serious injuries I couldn't fill my increased squad size on many missions near the end.
>>145570828
Doing the tutorial means you get a different first mission and some different flavour text, by the time you reach the blacksite you've experienced all of the tutorial.
Skulljacking the Officer will make a new time of enemy appear. You don't need to do the blacksite as soon as it spawns especially if you're using ballistics.
The secret to the blacksite is to take your time, reinforcements don't spawn till you grab the mountain dew.
Reminder that Xcom 2 is shit.

Yeah, I skulljacked an officer once and lost horribly, just wondering if doing it right is even worth it.
>>145571051

>>145571314
Ofcourse but that doesn't stop them being bland.
The idea to become resistance fighters in an alien occupied planet (but one where Humans are still the indigenous species) was a step backwards in the aesthetics department, not to mention how it threw out all the 'horror' aspects EU had.
>>145570954
Not yet. That sounds like a step above the Blacksite.

Do the odds of successfully skulljacking improve if you weaken the enemy first, or is it 70% chance regardless?
I also agree that the alien designs took a huge step backwards from EU. I really wish there wasn't such a focus on fighting ADVENT units because I got tired of that only a few hours into my first playthrough.
I have that itch to go back and play EW and fight the classic aliens, most of the new ones don't gel with me, just the Viper and Codex really.
>>145575789
then play EU again
>>145575789
I still think they're fine in X2, they're supposed to look like hybrids and Advent are supposed to look like humans in armour whereas in EU they were supposed to look like actual aliens and not things genetically modified to look half human.
Its apples and oranges, you can prefer the style in EU/EW but its not a step back.

It's got a metric shitload of weapons, many of which are unique to certain factions of enemies. It feels a lot more open ended and long than vanilla and you don't feel like you're on a timer. It is quite a bit harder to get things done in the early game since you only have a 6 seater unarmed flying bus and a handful of muskets. I'll try to do a run-down of the major factions:
The Academy - The Star Gods' information gatherers. They usually use ballistic weapons and harpoon guns that fire stun bolts. Usually not well armored. You can steal medical shit from them.
Orison Security - Sub-division of the Academy, also use ballistics but sometimes use energy weapons. Have armor roughly equivalent of Personal Armour.
Trader's Guild: Ballistics and Kevlar armor, their ships usually carry shit like chemicals, scrap metal, food, and other goods. You can raid their warehouses. Very rarely have energy weapons.
Dark Ones - Doom Demons, enough said.
Deep Ones - Lovecraft fishmen. Have high inherent armor but low tech weapons. They do have celatids and weapons that shoot celatid acid too though. Also Lobstermen who shrug off RPG shells.
Humanists - Nazis and Klansmen with ropes, clubs, axes, and guns.
Reticulans - Sectoids that have essentially been reduced to fending for themselves. Often carry energy weapons but have shit armor.
Spartans - Paramilitaries with high powered ballistic weapons.
Cult of Sirius - Cultists that worship the Ethereals. You'll raid their temples a lot. Take care not to slaughter the civilians during these missions, it pisses off the world governments you extort money from.
Once you get a proper interceptor craft you'll be able to shoot down small civilian ships, take their crew hostage with non-lethal weapons, and sell off their contents. Small Ship Engines go for $100,000 a piece which is damn good money for such an easy target.
Pistols are Useful.

I think my biggest problem with X2 so far is how so many missions have turn limits.
They gave us this neat mechanic for scouting and setting up ambushes, but if you actually take the time to get into a good position, you don't even have enough turns left to kill everything.
4-6 dudes
12 ayys
with
2 dudes to kill an ayy
2-3 ayys per turn
so
4-6 turns to kill all ayys
plus
1-2 turns to escape
that's
5-8 turns
except that the enemy's turns count so it's really
10-16 turns
You basically have to start killing from the moment you touch ground.
>>145611514
I get crazy attached to mine, because I can't help but assign backstories, personalities and relationships to them in my head. Honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way, because it means XCOM delivers an emotional experience unlike what most other games can ever come close to.

absolute best imo are infantry, shock trooper, anarchist, brawler, and guerilla. but that's because to me what they bring to the table is very unique compared to the other classes even if they use the same weapons.Samurai tries very hard to make melee gud. It doesn't quite succeed, but it tries very hard.

EW was an expansion that came out more than a year after the base game, and even then there were only a couple more enemies than what X2 has.

Again, EW was an expansion. X2 has more enemy types than EU. EW will be relevant to this comparison in about a year or so.
>>145618586
>counts the elite versions of exalt
>not the heavy and elite versions of advent
>>145618870
Exalt normal/elites have different perks and gene mods.
Heavy and elite advent just do extra damage and have more HP.
>>145618586
>Counting EXALT elites but not ADVENT elites.
Stop lying anon and include those five as well, or don't include the EXALT ones. If you include ADVENT elites, you get 24 to 25. If you cut the EXALT ones, you get 20 to 20.
Also, comparing EW to X2 is unfair and you know it. EW was a full expansion after more than a year of development. X2 is 3 months old. Compare vanilla to vanilla, you get 16 for EU (no EXALT) and 17 for X2 (no Alien Hunters).
It's pretty close either way, but at least be equitable about it, anon.
>>145618586
Do Floaters and Heavy Floaters really count as separate enemies? They are about as different from each other as the various "tiers" of Advent troops.

Yeah, Anarchist is interesting for sure, but I'd personally like a weapon backup. If it could do its grenade thing along with using a pistol or something, I'd like that.
Fury is extremely strange, but I personally really enjoy it.
>It's sick, but melee itself is still not gud. Not samurai's fault, just how xcom is. It's still a better attempt than Ranger though.Melee has many issues, but Samurai solves most of them (Untouchable, huge movement speed, hits very hard, improved accuracy, etc). It's not perfect, but it is pretty solid. Tack on a melee aim fix and you're basically golden.

>>145628796

>>145628793
Go back and play it for sure. Beat it at least once (ironman/honestman preferably, honestly its more forgiving then the new xcom when it comes to messing up). The gameplay is excellent, strategy layer/base management is nice, and the atmosphere is fun.
Make sure your using openxcom, its the best way to play. (You still need the original game files, so either find a place to download or pick up a cheap copy somewhere).
Once you beat that, go try some of the big overhaul mods like PirateZ, FMP, and there's a third one I'm not remembering right now. Also take this pic so you know how to maneuver this battlescape.
>>145629045
Yes you can win. Win conditions are still pretty much the same as og x-com as far as I can tell, just its alot more complicated getting there. Build a space worthy ship so you can go kick the Ethereal's asses on their own turf. However, you actually need to gather specific parts to build the ship, get security data/access cards from all the major factions and probably find them in the first place. I wouldn't know, I've got like 60 hours in my current campaign (guesstimate) and I haven't even started on that checklist.

DOOM PLAYTHROUGH WHENI kind of find it hard to enjoy these videos because there's such a disconnect with old Beags vs. current beags if your watching the streams.
>>145674556
His XCOM 2 youtube series is pretty trash. And it never took off anyways so people are not invested into it enough to care.
>>145674881
Hard to make a not trash video about a trash game.
>>145674773
>there's such a disconnect with old Beags vs. current beags
Yeah, can't wait for him upload the rest of the first X2 campaign and start a Guerrilla War series or continue the Longer Donger campaing, because he sounds a bit bored of vanilla Xcom 2 in this current playthrough
>>145674773
>there's such a disconnect with old Beags vs. current beags
Yeah, can't wait for him to upload more ArmA videos.
>>145675101
I'd say focus on finishing Long Dong for the youtube videos and keep going on guerrilla war for the streams. And of course release the videos for the other games he keeps teasing us with.
The issue with the current X2 series for me is I feel like I'm going over old ground that's already been covered. He already finished a legendary vanilla on stream, I'm 99% sure he's going to have no issue finishing this playthrough with close to zero casualties (lack of tension), and it doesn't feature that tight editing style which can jazz up content to be more interesting (which in this case I feel would be necessary). The gameplay just feels old, with all the changes in game balance through patches and Beagles own evolution in how he discusses and understands the game.
The original X2 videos pre-release were pretty awesome.
>>145671418
This shit is seriously difficult. I doubled the timer on the reinforcements coming from attrition mod (6 turns instead of 3) - still fucking brutal. You cannot afford to get drawn into firefights AT ALL - no wasted time is the goal. Ambushes have to be alpha strikes and you don't have excessive time to set them up or bullshit. Plus playing with 60 seconds to decide per turn really adds to the pressure. This was the 2nd mission of game. Perhaps I should start with squadsize 6. I have more squad size upgrades mod tho so I dunno. That makes final squad size 10 which seems like X-Com would be rolling deep in the late game.
Going to restart again I guess and see how it goes with squadsize 4.
>>145676674
>Plus playing with 60 seconds to decide per turn
I feel like it would be really hard to balance an experience while using this.
>>145677695
Can tweak it via ini as well to whatever. I might try 90 secs, but that's about as far as I would go. Otherwise whats the point?
The timer isn't the hardest part. That just adds tension (Also because you don't see how many turns you have left on the mission - replaced by countdown timer, altho its pretty easy to judge.) It's the all pods active mod forcing me into long firefights at this point. Makes it hard to accomplish the mission on maps with an objective of kill all enemies. I think if I go back and have a perfect Gatecrasher so one has 4 Squaddies it may help. I had 1 KIA and 2 wounded - going back and starting over seeing if that makes a difference.
>adding even more timers to x2
wew
>>145679232

Xcom2 is bad? Elaborate
Hello Fellow commanders,
Saturday /xcg/ will be playing /ink/ in the /vg/ league 6 RO16.
I want to know i you guys want to change or add some music for the team.
Our current music:
Anthem www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztpwb6kOMUc
Goalhorn www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtyvh-DeQYs
Victory music www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrHuxRfXb2s
Beaglerush brace horn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve0PfpFRl8M
>>145682637
Its EW with all the difficulty, complexity and design taken out.
>>145682637
Please don't. Surely you can sate your curiosity by just scrolling further up in the thread.
>>145682679
As long as the Goalhorn stays the same, I am content.
I was looking around the SDK for some stuff and i saw these ui rank textures, there's no actual texture or you can't see them or something, but they have names and the path says "UILibrary_DLC3Images"

>cavalier
>champion
>paladin
Intriguing...
>>145683189
medieval mech knights confirmed
>>145682637
It has fewer enemy types than EW.
Destructible floors are a meme and just add yet another laggy pause to the game.
The strategy layer is literally just driving around in way-too-close-to-real-time with no nuance, complexity, or choice.
Avatars are a fucking stupid design for an enemy, let alone a final boss.
You are forced to end the game by the doom ticker, unlike every other previous xcom game.
Related, they turned to putting timers on everything instead of doing actual game design.
Never thought I'd say this, but LW did so much right and was so much better designed than either Firaxis game.
>>145683189
>squire
>cavalier
>knight
>vanguard
>templar
>paladin
>champion
What do you guys think the rank tree will be? This is a random guess, I don't know enough details on these terms for a completely educated guess.
>>145684751
>Never thought I'd say this, but LW did so much right and was so much better designed than either Firaxis game.
Well you still should be ashamed for saying it.
>>145684751
Fucking this, it amazes me people can actually say Xcom 2 is anything approaching a good game.
>there's advent videogames
>>145684751
Even worse then the usual criticisms. Once again comparing X2 to EW for some contrived reason. Destructible floors aren't a meme, they are a gameplay mechanic that add to the game. X1 has no nuance in its strategy layer either. Who the hell wants to drag out the lategame for any xcom game it sucks for every single title, and I'm pretty sure you can still extend the X2 campaign out to two years if you really want (why would you want too?). Timers are game design, you might not like that mechanic, but a game mechanic can't be "not game design" that's impossible.
>>145685359
>there's advent videogames
So they finally moved past their lsd balls huh. I wonder what themes they have.
>>145684751
>but LW did so much right and was so much better designed than either Firaxis game.
Thats not really saying much
>>145685701
>comparing a game to an earlier title is contrived
I should work apply to work for Firaxis and just release smaller and smaller chunks of Enemy unknown.
>>145685875
Your supposed to compare it to EU, not the expansion. As has been said in like the 10 previous conversations. Even if you compare it too EW it stands up fine, but the 'enemy count" of a fully released game with dlc and an expansion is just a cheap shot, X2 will overtake X1 in enemy types by the time Shen's Final gift comes out (most likely) and it won't even have the expansion yet.
>implying X2 is the same game (or the same but smaller) as X1
hilarious
>>145686145
Even vanilla EU has more actual enemy types than Xcom 2.
>>implying X2 is the same game (or the same but smaller) as X1
Actually no, xcom 2 is the same game but with the content and thought stripped out.

Those are probably the rank names for the new MEC class we're getting with Shen's Last Gift.
>>145688057
3 and a half hours from now.
>>145688160
Still completely unfitting.
>>145684751
All invalidated by the level of mod support they implemented.
That alone makes it objectively a better release.
>>145688246
Nevermind that the MEC-3 suit was Paladin in XCOM I guess...
Reusing stuff from the original is completely unfitting guise.

Oh sorry, let me fix this
Delusional little newfag of a whore
>>145697250
I've been here since the EU days.
>>145697141
It isn't based on people not liking X2, it's the fact that everyone is playing a different game now.
With mod support, everyone is playing their own game with different rules, so it makes it hard to have consistent discussion. With EU/EW and Long War, we were, for the most part, playing the same game with the same rules.
>>145697169
Wait what the fuck? There's 40k material in the SDK?
>>145697319
And you don't know the extreme drought we suffer from time to time?

Delusional, lying, newfag piece of shit of a whore
>>145697752
We do get droughts, but never droughts that rely on people not liking the game for us to pass.
Its funny how xcom 2 "oldfags" have to resort to insults to try and defend their game.
>>145697558
Except people rarely actually post Xcom 2 content (beyond look at my dress up soldiers) and even when they do its rarely replied to. The only thing that generates any form of activity or replies is people legitimately criticising Xcom 2 or posts about the old game. Not even basegame Xcom 2 talk generates replies or discussion and neither does trying to discuss mods or the DLCs
>>145697971
Yeah yeah keep up the bullshit, everyone agrees with you and our silence is the confirmation of it.
And you really are a lying piece of shit of a newfag if you think "resorting to insults" isn't common in here or on 4chan in general
>>145698406
Peace is an illusion my nig
>>145698404
Back to /v/ or r/4chan, /xcg/ was always capable of actually trying to discuss things without resorting to slinging insults without any further attempt at discussion. Although since you arrived along with the rest of the cancer that killed this general when Xcom 2 launched you probably think that resorting to ebin insults is cool and good for the general.
>everyone agrees with you
Theres about 5 people left who actually actively post and don't just drop in to ask questions or spam shit about waifus.
>>145698653
There's no arguing with you. It's the same thing all threads. You're not interested in a discussion, so we don't give you one.
Whores get what they deserve, not what they want
>>145697689
The eight pointed star isn't from 40k you fucking retard.
>>145698981
just tell the dude you bum
>>145698775
>You're not interested in a discussion
Except theres more than one person with actual criticism about Xcom 2, you're just too autistic to realise more than just one person can disagree with you. Plenty of people try to have discussions about Xcom 2 but just get "hurr fuck off shitposter" or "big blocky rejects xDDDD" spammed for disagreeing.
>Whores get what they deserve, not what they want
Holy shit, this is the most retarded attempt at being deep and sounding "cool" I've heard, how underaged are you?
>>145698981
Do you have to resort to being edgy in every post you make?
>>145699129
There's no attempt to be deep. By the contrary, I'm keeping it as superficial as possible to see if you can understand this simple concept:
Most people don't agree with you, everyone's sick of your stupid spamming, so as far as I'm concerned you're a stupid whore who sooner deserves to be hanged or killed by a firing squad than to be engaged in discussion
>>145698981
Chaos + 8-pointed star does though
also, >being mean
>>145699358
>so as far as I'm concerned you're a stupid whore who sooner deserves to be hanged or killed by a firing squad than to be engaged in discussion
Wow you're edgy. I rarely actually post about how much I dislike Xcom 2, theres plenty of other people who post about it I generally ignore them and discuss the mods for the open xcom or LW but you can't wrap your little mind around the fact more than one person can not like something.
You reek of an underaged who just discovered 4chan and think its somewhere you just spam retarded insults and are edgy.
I almost think you're falseflagging, I would hope no one would unironically think what you're saying wasn't edgy shit anyway
>>145699593

Just started a new game after not playing for months. Did experimental grenades get nerfed? I remember them doing more damage.
>>145716521
Oh, as a general rule people who scream about newfags or how much of an oldfag they are end up being actual newfags trying too hard or seasonal posters who pop in around release times for a few days and then go away. I think my record was with a sharpshooter with killzone and extended mags, plus five others in my squad, and I dropped Kill Zone on the reinforcement square coming in.
Enemy pod ran into the kill zone or triggered overwatch fire, the reinforcements got fucked to hell, and it was at that exact moment, despite being at the very end of the game and easily able to do the finale, that I quit and began installing shittons of mods just so the game would be harder.

>>145719992
I tend to agree. The only one I ever occasionally take in my off slot is acid grenades.
>>145719992
Yeah, definitely. I remember them doing slightly more damage than their same tier regular grenades but that might have changed. Regardless, they all still apply extra DoT.
Fire grenades prevent enemies using abilities, including melee attacks so they're perfect against chryssalids, lancers and berserkers.
Acid grenades remove twice as much armor which is good against andromedons and sectopods.
Gas grenades lower enemy aim and movement a bit and aren't really that great.
>>145720153
>>145719992
Acid grenades shred more armor than normal and do damage over time
Fire grenades do more up-front damage, do damage over time, and prevents various abilities being used by burning units
Gas grenades have a bigger radius, do damage over time, significantly reduce enemy aim and mobility, and can be used to block areas to some units.
Proximity mines are beast as fuck. Drop one in the middle of a pod with a Grenadier with Salvo, then put him on overwatch (or shoot the pod) and you get two hits. The Proximity mine does 8 base damage with a 5 tile radius and shreds 2 armor.
>>145721105

I don't see anything that says what weapon uses what reticle and i couldn't find the textures in the sdk. I did figure out that one line in the weapon template's code that determines if a weapon is conventional, magnetic or beam can change the reticle. But i have no idea if that line changes anything else, and i don't know how that line determines what reticle to use.
So i suppose worst case scenario i'll just make them use the magnetic reticle, but i'd like to be able to make my own.

>>145736260

>>145736898

>>145737212
No idea. Never said I was a modder, I was just trying to explain to the other anon why he might not want to do it the way he suggested.
>>145736898
That's a tough question to answer and i have neither of those mods, i don't think at least. But what you probably want to do is to take the Long Dong smg mod, and replace the .upk(the .upk would be under the content folder inside the smg mod folder) with the halo one, then, you would have to open the .uc file (which would be under the src folder) with the modbuddy thing, and you need to find something that says something like
Template.GameArchetype = "LongDongSMG.SomethingOrOther";
And replace what is inside the quotes with the archetype name of the halo smg, to get the archetype name of the halo smg you would need to open the upk with the Xcom editor(which you open from the modbuddy under tools).
I'm mostly just guessing though, and you will probably have to fix and rename some other things here and there but i think that's the gist of it.
But basically, tl;dr: Inside the .UPK is all the models, textures and archetypes, and in the .uc files you'll need to find things that basically tell the game to use those things from the .upk.
>>145738716
Also there's no way you could break something forever, at worst you'd break one or both mods and you'd have to redownload them.
Just don't like, make a save in-game until you're sure the mod works, or make sure you keep a save from before you're testing the mod, so if you break them you can just keep playing from the old save.
I don't know if these kinds of mods could even break a save though, but just in case.
>>145738716
I only want to change the stats of the SMG, not the model it uses, noises, etc.
>>145738852
Well in hindsight what i suggested is pretty stupid anyway. Unless the longdong smg has unique abilities. But if you just want to change damage numbers you'd just have to copy paste the .ini and rename it to the halo one. Well maybe it's not that simple, best way to do it would be to just open both the halo and longdong ini files and make sure to copy paste the appropriate values into their appropriate fields.
>>145739198
The long dong SMG increases mobility, reduced detection radius, and some other stuff
>>145739272
If i was to guess, that's probably not a simple as just copying .ini values over, but i don't really know.
>>145739542
I'll just see how I go while I wait for someone who knows what they're doing to show up and bail me out of whatever mess I've created

I found this reading through the comments on the Halo Reach Weapons page in the Workshop:
>While i cant give you a full tutorial, ill explain how it works...
The single shot action is defined as a new ability and the parameters of that ability are defined in the custom script file "X2Ability_ODSTSMGAbilities.uc". In there im telling the game i have the ability "SMGFire" defined by
static function X2AbilityTemplate AddODSTSMGShot(Name AbilityName='SMGFire')
and under that i tell the game what the ability is.. which is a copy paste of the original shooting action, however.. i changed the lines
ActionPointCost.iNumPoints = 1;
ActionPointCost.bConsumeAllPoints = false;
This allows the smg to be used as a single action.
A mobility skill would have to be defined in the same way... so it would have to be under all of the code for the shooting action, and then it would be a new ability
static function X2AbilityTemplate AddODSTSMGShot(Name AbilityName='SMGMobility')
or something like that.. with that we then define the mobility and give it to the gun. in the guns script file "X2Item_ODSTSMG.uc" with the line
Template.Abilities.AddItem('SMGFire');
would become
Template.Abilities.AddItem('StandardFire');
and you add
Template.Abilities.AddItem('SMGMobility);
--------------------------------------------------------
with that said however i want to make that ability something like a .ini ability so like...
If 'SMG Mobility' == 1 //then
{
Template.Abilities.AddItem('SMGMobility);
}
That way people can turn it off or on if they want
edit: yes this would require the mod buddy as you have to recompile script edits for it to work

Do terror missions in 1994com get progressively harder/more complex with larger maps and more aliens, or does their difficulty stagnate and get easier over time as you get more research and equipment and shit?
Does FMP change them in any meaningful way?
>>145754649
The alien types that appear on missions get harder over time, yes.
>>145754649
The only part of terror missions that increase difficulty are new alien types, which offset your better gear. FMP changes terror missions as much as the rest of the game: aliens, tech and maps.
>>145753304
I am playing with many of the difficulty mods he implemented, it's hard but fun.
Don't do it if you're a part of the - omg timers crowd tho.
This comp relies on that mechanic to ramp up the difficulty and psycological pressure.
Some people find that "not Xcom" others welcome different mechanics as an attempt to have a fresher take on Xcom.
Nothing's perfect, see if you like it yourself.
What I did was edit the ini to keep the supply aspect but make the reinforcements appear later. So if I am taking "too long" I get punished.

The items themselves are interesting enough.

Wut is FMP mod? I played OG Xcom when it was new but haven't modded it.
I will probably go back and play a bit when tired of 2. I like 2 but the mod scene needs to embrace one or two solid overhauls. This way we can have a shared experience theme going again.
That and they need to finish optimizing and bug fixing.
The final DLC and X-Pac will probably leave it in a better state than EW.

>FMP
FMP stands for Final Mod Pack. Its a collection of mods for openxcom all tossed together and made to play nice/be compatiable while trying to achieve a semblance of balance. If you already played through OG x-com (which you have) its pretty fun. It basically adds tons of new alien reaces and weapons. The alien races vary from aliens from xenonaughts, terror from the deep, x-com apocalypse, and some of the better designed fan made ones.
The weapons vary from widely available traditional earth tech (RPG, AKs, Hunting rifles, shotguns, all inferior to X-COM starting tech) to more variety of starting X-COM tech tier (Different rifles, pistols, sniper rifles, shotguns with buckshot and slugs) and then it adds more laser weapons, Gauss weapons, more plasma weapons, flamethrowers, and other exotic gear.
The Airgame features more X-COM craft (which you will need) and more alien ships, the biggest change being alien ships that can actually engage and shoot down your own well before you get to the battleship (UFO fighter classes usually scout for base assaults and can easily engage your interceptors even though they are only smalls). The manufacturing rules are re-worked so you can't just print money, their are new buildings you can build for your bases, their are tons of new procedurally generated map types. The goal of the game is still the same. Obviously can't list every detail, but its a fun time, it significanlty extends the length of the original games campaign.
I played it to the point where I was rolling with your traditional end game power armor and heavy plasma before I called it quits as I felt I reached that X-COM endgame plateau/slog. Here's the tech tree to show how much stuff was added.

Yeah, can't wait torip the fuck out of it.
As I just started my PirateZ base defense, I just wanted to share why this mission type has been made into a literal x-com hell of map design. I'll will be posting several Map views to help illustrate my points.

>>145770790
Hello Yarikachi
>>145770640
In this picture, I have labeled all the relevant points of interest. Aliens can enter the base through the Hangers and the Access Lift. Normally, you would build your base so that the hangars are isolated from the rest of your base, only connected by the access lift. This makes your base extremely defensible as the aliens can only move through a single choke point which you can just pour explosives and automatic fire down until the initial assault force is exhuasted and the move in to mop up the survivors.
I don't have that setup because my base is currently in transition as I try to fit all my new research and manufacturing building into one place and its left me with a somewhat subpar defense setup. However, it actually doesn't matter too much as I will show in the next two posts.
>>145771179
I don't quite understand, it looks like your hanger is only connected via the single chokepoint.
>>145771179
However, PirateZ decided your standard base layout was too good. So they added this upper floor lever. This upper floor level adds another four more chokepoints to what I already had to cover, and being on entirely separate floors, you can't easily move troops to defend it or move reinforcements if one point starts to get overwhelmed.
>>145771335
The hangars are connected to all adjacent buildings, the tan looking squares are all open space, so if you look their are 5 different open corridors between the access lift and the hangar. Also that isn't the entire map, their are more buildings if you go further west and south.
>>145771335
Aliens can enter through your hangars or access lifts.
>>145771179
>legendary ironman run
>"alien hunters" mode deselected
>viper king still appears in blacksite missions
>>145771691
Here's where everything goes to hell. This is the basement floor of your wonderfully designed base. It's a sewer system, and it spans the entire map no matter where you have constructed/placed your buildings. As you can see, the attackers can enter this floor from the hangars and access lift, and from here they can move to any part of your base. There are effectively no easy chokepoints to hold, and hostile attackers can roam about anywhere for the most part.
The saving grace, but also the reason why this floor is really frustrating, is that this entire area is partially submerged in water. This means that it takes extra time units and energy to move anywhere on this floor. Movement is extremely slow, and getting anywhere can take a couple of turns. On one hand, this means it will take a while for hostiles to cover any distance and potentially infiltrate past your forces. But, it means hunting down strayyy ayyys can take a lifetime.
To successfully repel the attacking forces you must control all three floors and remove all enemies from the entire map, which for all practical purposes has been trippled in size from the original game.

Jake's game.:^)
>>145772538
All of this means base defenses can last extremely long. To understand just why this is so bad, we have to discuss a mechanic added to PirateZ that adjusts how Morale works in X-COM. But first,we have to build speed for 12 hourswe have to understand how panic works in the original game.
In the original x-com, your troops all have their own bravery stat that decides how much morale they have. Morale recovers slowly by itself every turn, but can be reduced when a soldier takes a wound (only his morale is lowered), when psionically attacked, or when other soldiers dies (lowers everyone's morale).
Soldiers lose morale from the deaths of friendlies base on their relative rank. If you have a squad full of high ranking soldiers and a rookies dies, the morale loss will be minimal. If a high ranking soldier dies in a squad full of rookies, the morale loss will be significant. Loosing multiple soldiers within a single turn is the quickest way to reduces morale.
If morale falls to low, your soldiers begin to panick. Panicking includes:, panic (your soldiers throws down his weapon and spends his turn moving in a random direction), Berserk 1 (your soldiers instantly uses all his time units doing nothing), Berserk 2 (You soldiers fire his weapon as much as possible in random directions). As you can imagine, Berserk 2 can lead to friendly fire. The soldier could: A. Shoot and hit nothing (thank god), B. Shoot and kill a friendly soldier (sucks), C. Your heavy weapon specialist has now launched a rocket that instantly kills half your squad (potentially GG). C will also likely leave your entire team incapacitated due to panic for several following turns.
(continued in part 2, where I explain the actual change PirateZ introduces)
>>145772538
I'm simultanously getting flashbacks of hunting down trillions of underground bases in Metal Fatigue, and playing base defense in X-com FMP where the game gracefully sees it fit to scatter all the shit from your general stores on the hangar floors.
>>145773469
It seems that Jake wasn't the only one who had mission tempo in mind. The creator of PirateZ did not want you to dwiddle your thumbs and wait for every single alien to exit thier ships one by one and then get drowned in a hail of fire. He wants you to be forced to aggressively assault ships and bases instead of camping outside for 100+ turns (or even 10+ turns actually).
Thus, PirateZ actually has a hidden timer mechanic. In PirateZ, you troops start with morale, but every single turn, their morale will steadily fall with an inverse relationship to bravery. This means, that if nothing happens for the entire mission, eventually your entire squad will begin to panic on and off, with the bravest ones beginning to panic last.
To offset this, you need to kill the enemy. Killing enemies provides a large morale bonus to the soldier who scores the kill, and a descent one to the entire squad. You keep killing, your squad keeps rolling. This mechanic (as I already noted) means you must keep advancing and killing the enemy in order for your squad to operate at full effectiveness.
This can make combing large maps extremely brutal, as your squad slowly loses effectiveness and begin to act erratically. In a tough mission vs. difficult enemies, casualties can spike right at the end as your forced to sprint your troops in a tactically unsound manner to try an finish the fight.
(Continued in part 3 with the conclusion)
>>145771691
Ahh, I get it. the marked chokepoint confused me
>>145773175
You can understand the mechanics - now you know.
>>145772197
When you "deselected "alien hunters"" mode, did you just turn off the nest mission? You have to deactivate the alien hunters dlc through steam or the launcher, you can't just have the hunting weapons without the rulers.
>>145774635
As you can imagine, when you combine this with a base assault everything comes together in a very rotten stew. You have: Tough and numerous enemies, a large squad of soldiers that mixes high ranking (your squad that goes on missions) and low ranking (recruits waiting to fill in for the casualties you take) soldiers, and a huge map, nearly tripple the size of a standard mission with tons of vertacaity that isolates each floor. You must comb the entire the map and eliminate every single enemy. Casualties will cause your morale to drop on top of the hidden ticking timer that is steady morale bleed. In my first PirateZ base defense I took 75% casualties, 50% of these in the final combing phase of the battle. And that's why PirateZ bases hell. Thanks for reading.
I will now go an try to complete my current one much more successfully and efficiently then the first.
>>145772856
I'm hoping that my learning experience from the first go will significantly reduce the pain this time around. The first time I didn't even know about the top and bottom floor.
>>145772967
Because itsfun
>>145773024
Usually the enemy faction will send ships on missions to find your base. Mostly fighters, so thier tough, but you can shoot them down. If you don't, they can spawn an assualt ship that will attempt to crash your party. Obviously you want to go for the scout. Also, they usually only do this after you've been crashing their ships, stealing their stuff, and killing their guys.
>>145774885
Yeah, I was just marking the "standard" chokepoint of an optimally designed bases in regards to defense. I also did this too demonstrate how the PirateZ base really weakens this normally sound tactic by making sound your base can't have just one chokepoint.
>>145775258
Is there a mod for the OG that incorporates these things without the Piratez content? The mechanics sound awesome. The Piratez part I can do without.
>>145778293

The changes to base mechanics /layout and morale.
>>145779189
Ok so if I'm understanding this correctly you want:
>Tripple Layer base
>Morale Bleed
To be honest, as far as I know, only PirateZ has these changes, though I could go take a quick perusal to see if their are modular components instead of an entire overhaul.

>>145774635
Cute game mechanic, but it doesn't seem very realistic and that's rustling me.
Also sounds like it will inevitably fuck you on the longer missions as enemies can be randomly distributed. Are there any items in game that help you locate enemies? If so that might help to even out some of the fuckage, I guess.
Is there a wiki for this game or anything? 99% of the readme is changelog.

I swear I read that they purposefully did it so you couldn't end the base defense missions instantly with a single blaster bomb. Which is completely retarded.
>Cute game mechanic, but it doesn't seem very realistic and that's rustling me.
Yeah its a game mechanic first and foremost. Usually long mission don't screw if you play well, but you need to advance every turn and have a solid perimeter so nothing slips by unnoticed. Motion trackers (ayy phones) can help.
There is a wiki though its not very complete: http://ufopaedia.org/index.php/Piratez
>>145780965
Honestly I'm just playing it on the regular difficulty. There's so much new content, the mod is not easy, I'm finding the difficulty to be perfectly acceptable. I'm challenged often, I steam roll some missions, other missions are very challenging.

>>145786662
Can you have multiple bases?
>>145786587
I figured that but what classes should I give priority to?
>>145786795
Yes
>>145786795
You can have up to eight. In the umodded x-com, two bases main bases were standard, with a few other bases that served entirely to hold intereceptors and provide radar coverage.
For other overhaul mods they often add extra base buildings that are necessary for building or researching stuff so you might need more large bases. My current main base is bursting at the seems currently, and I have two other bases.
>>145787059
Cool wasn't sure if piratez changed that or something
>>145787318
Nope, but there is one issue. You can't beat the game if you lose your main base (as far as I know).
Plot wise, you original base has a state of the art laboratory that you found by accident (I'm 99% certain your operating out of an old x-com base you found by luck). This is an issue because you can't replicate the laboratory. If you lose your main base, you lose all ability to conduct research, and thus advance through the game.
>>145787590
Sounds like a good garrison is important
>>145779189
I'm pretty sure the combat stress / morale bleed mechanic is implemented by individual entries in the recovery section of each armor in the ruleset file.
I'm not sure if these strings are part of the extended openXCOM that piratez uses or not, but if they aren't you should be able to add them to the stock outfits in vanilla (coveralls, personal armor, power suit, flying suit) to implement the mechanic.
As you can see, the standard outfit decays 20% of your current morale at the start of turn, then regenerates 20% of your bravery score in morale. The result is that your morale balances around your bravery value.
Noting that low morale effects begin at 50 morale, any unit with 50 bravery or higher will not succumb to panic unless any allies die, they take damage, or, in piratez case, they are afflicted with morale damage by incendiary or chemical weapons.
>>145779669
I have not I asked about it and certain things seem pretty hokey.
Take that with a grain of salt please because mechanics wise it sounds excellent.
>>145787590
There are a few buildings that can serve as replacement labs, but they only house a couple of scientists at a time, and are extremely costly. Also, any hacking type production stuff requires the computers from the lab. Near the very end of the massive tech tree you gain the ability to build a supercomputer facility that can, among other things, allow hacking production. So it is possible, as far as I can tell, to win without the lab, but you'll be at an absolutely crippling disadvantage.
Is XCOM 2 good yet? Didn't play since launch.
Did they change a whole bunch of things, or did some mods fix it?
>>145787917
Yeah, but its your main base, so all your best troops and equipment should be their anyway. The main thing is that currently I am trying to run both research and manufacturing out the same base and am running out of room. I may have to move my manufacturing operations to another base soon
>>145788151
>seem pretty hokey
Oh no its extremely hokey. Like extremely, all the time, un-apologetically. Your crew is super-mutant pirate girls and it all builds off that premise flavor wise. If you absolutely cannon stomach all the pirate-themed talk and early equipment, plus the ridiculous amount of sexual content that starts with almost all armors being the equivelent of bikini chainmail and never stops.
For me though, I enjoy the whole package, the world and its factions/plot are actually very well constructed and interesting.
