its latency based sadly, if your internet is shit you might get the "all pellets hit the body but no damage is done" effect
the best example of this is when you hook reaper and shoot him then he wrath forms right after and takes 0 damage despite it being clearly visible that he got hit
you should be able to 1 shot anything that has 250 hp or lower, the best way to guarantee this is to get into the habit of holding down mouse 1 as you reel them in so it fires the absolute first chance it gets and they cant iceblock or wrath form or whatever else out of it
also get in the habit of doing quick melee after your gun fires just to make sure
keep in mind that you can move a little while hooking people so always move forward to get in their face as they land in front of you
against other tanks its ideal if you dont hook them but rather walk up in their face m1>hook>m1>melee, this combo deals 500+ damage and you will literally 1 shot rein and dva in the space of 1 sec, be sure you aim at neck area so some of the pellets hit the head for extra damage
if you cant safely walk into their face just hook them, against another hog (if he is alone) you want to bait him into hooking you first so you can do the above combo to kill him instantly because the first one to hook is always at a disadvantage due to not being able to hook cancel shotgun shots

Other anon. Roadhog is my third most played.
Roadhog's shotgun does 320 damage with all pellets, I think, but its spread is very wide. Hit the hook, and hold down M1 to make sure your shotgun goes off at the first possible frame so that they can't use skills to deny. Aim for the face, if they live use melee to animation-cancel your fire and very few will escape. Learn your right-click range, it can also one-hit a ton of shit. It's projectile until it explodes, so prefire it around corners.

Then again, i think that only happens in Hanabi and King's Row defense. If the Symmetra knows how to play and the team is just decent that means she shuts down the flank route which means the DPS can alternate to get health packs without major consequences. Plus self-sustain heros like 76, Bastion, Pudge, Mei.
