Hey /twg/,

This was my very first Total War and I'm left scratching my head a little. I played as Empire, which was very fun and had some interesting thematic elements. Offices are cool as shit. Having my Arch Lector heading the war against Vampires makes sense and feels good. However some units seem to seriously underperform (here's looking at Halberdiers/Handgunners) compared to their cheaper, lower tech counterparts. Magic is definitely broken (I have to play on Medium unit size, but even still Searing Doom is literally a waste of Winds of Magic), and agents are seriously fucked up (my level 14 assassin specced captain has not a high enough chance to assassinate but my level 2 brightwizard does? What?), but in general it seems all right. It all ended a bit abruptly though as I showed up in time for Archeon and Friends to come out of the woodwork with literally twice their numbers from confederated stacks (these were just the vanguard too), and pretty much decimated them in zero time flat and the game just ended, when I thought the game I was playing all that time was merely the buildup to the invasion of Chaos.

What really gets me though is that in 90 turns, I didn't end up getting any of the high end units. I was so busy rapidly expanding that there was never a point at which I could reasonably dismiss bad/old units like plain Spearmen and recruit new ones or replace them with higher experience recruits because even with a dozen provinces I didn't have the economy to support doing that with the global recruitment and my stacks were a million miles away from the finally teched up provinces to do so locally. I had access to Steam Tanks and Demigryphs in the last 10 turns of the game but Karl Franz was trying to get Ghal Maraz in the fucking Badlands while everyone else was finishing off the Vampires or getting to Chaos. Should I have built tall instead of wide? Fewer armies? What do I do to get my catbird knights?

Chaos defeat dwarfs 9 times out of 10 and greenskins can destroy VC quite easily. Empire and VC don't belong in teh same category at all.

93 turns is pretty quick, usually you can't really expand that fast without people declaring war on you and taking advantage of weaknesses, or having major public order penalties. You probably want to maintain at least around 3k surplus gold per turn, otherwise your economy can't grow fast enough, you can't earn more money, you can't build more buildings and get higher tier units and build more armies. Globa recruitment shouldn't be something you rely on too much. It honestly doesn't take that long to march an army across the Empire with forced march, so if you pump out a bunch of greatswords, demigryphs and steam tanks from Altdorf, you could send them up the river and have them fighting Chaos in like three turns. Also, you can teleport to quest objectives. Considering they always seem to be ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD, it's usually worth it to dish out the 5k gold, which is really worth it, considering the expense of army upkeep and what you're wasting by marching Karl Franz and his merry men across the world for a dozen turns.

You should probably build taller. On higher difficulties, it's basically necessary or you get overrun. I assume for your first game you played on either easy or normal, so the AI is a lot less aggressive and doesn't punish weakness as much. But I tried playing Empire on very hard the other day, and within 16 turns, I was getting attacked by three full stacks of ELECTOR COUNTS and a pack of fucking dwarves, on top of the greenskins rampaging around.

Vampire lord / Manny, 2 vampiresses (you can skip those if you want), and fill the rest with wight kings

Use lord / vamps to snipe enemy general / characters with spirit leech
Raise zombies when you need some meatshield buffer
Use Vampiresses (regeneration + regen skill) and wight kings for combat, try to keep them mostly together

also, mounts are optional (but recommended because of stunning shenanigans)

How do you bypass the hardcap on hero limits? In my last VC playthrough I only ever recruited a total of 5 Wight Kings on 5 provinces at super late game. Also, are banshees worthwhile in a hero army?

After a successful assassination characters have like, -50% chance to succeed on assassinations for a turn or two. It took me a very long time to notice the tiny icon that pops up saying they're exhausted. It explained why my Banshees (I don't know how a banshee gets exhausted) went from 80% success rate to about 20% on a shitter lord, then back up to 60% on fucking Karl Franz.

Do units benefit from campaign technology tree bonuses in multiplayer?

Hey guys want to get your opinion on what units are worth it to get on VC playthrough/campaign?

Seems difficult in the beginning with the zombies as the main tank and just skellies as the main 'infantry'. How am I supposed to use fell bats (they're weak as shit?) and direwolves?

Also, any tactics of using ghouls, at least until I can spawn monstrous units (varghulf, vargheist, etc)? Any units I should be avoiding?

Cool end to a cool battle. Enemy Dwarf army had like 2 cannons and 3 organ guns which absolutely chewed up my Chosen as they were closing in. Finally closed in, got a couple arty units tied up as well as plenty of Ironbreakers, Slayers, and Longbeards. Used my second line Great Weapon Chosen to plug gaps and start to surround, and the faster Forsaken and Chaos Spawn to hit the Thunderers and strike the front line melee dorfs from behind. Wasn't long before they were all dead. However, old mate Ungrim wouldn't back down. So for the next 5 minutes Archeon and Ungrim had a fight to the death. What a top fella, how can anybody not like the Dwarfs?

Yeah, it was on Normal, but I'm very shit at the RTS portion of the game (outside of a strong rolling flank or hitting rear with Cav I can't seem to do anything fancy with any consistency, including re-positioning ranged to shoot into melee), but I suppose I'll give simple ol' Hard a try for a run as Balthasar Gelt. I ended up with an economy of 7K+ per turn, but with how expensive buildings are, upgrading something in any of 13 fucking provinces meant that 7K profit more or less didn't exist. I was getting Greatswords into most of my armies, but again, this was a huge sink. Is it acceptable to "bench" a Lord for a few turns by disbanding his units so the savings from Upkeep can be used to higher better/more experienced units, or is this wasting the Lord? The whole point of my post was that I had serious trouble getting anything that required T4 or T5 buildings. I had been saving up to make the Battle College in Altdorf and the special Shrine in Middenheim so I could recruit like Level 6 Wizards and Warrior Priests, but being that they costed 15000 gold, I got to train exactly one Warrior Priest before the game ended, never mind trying to get Witch Hunters. It does seem like this is more a symptom of my having built wide because I AM PRINCE AND EMPEROR so I thought stupidly that I should control the whole Empire. Wissenland was actually last to go because I didn't even have a "confederate" option for them, so I had to betray them and make people hate me just to get at that sweet, sweet Nuln Gunnery School.

Ah, that is a shame. Hypothetically, if you sacrifice one slot per settlement to a binding circle, you can reach a theoretical maximum of n+1 banshees per province, where n is the number of settlements in that province. This works out to 14 banshees if you hold both Sylvanias, Stirland and Averland. The 250g upkeep and the banshee starting at level 1-7 doesn't make it seem worthwhile though.

If you disband a lord, you can get him back with no penalty for free from the lord pool by making a new army, I'm pretty sure. If you ended up with that much per turn, you should have been able to constantly be upgrading your stuff and increasing your profits massively. Definitely make sure you grab Marienburg as soon as possible, the harbor makes you a tonne of money. Also, be sure to trade with everyone you possibly can all the time, and build as many resource buildings, like gold mines and dye factories or whatever, as you can. You can also just go sack towns for huge amounts of gold. Instead of occupying everything and spreading yourself too thin, just sack settlements that aren't really ideal, especially if they're worth heaps. I mean, if you're getting 7k gold a turn, it's not that much, but earlier on and mid-game it can be great. Definitely make sure you build up your economy though. Most of your towns and villages should have a money making building in them, especially considering you don't really need much else. I find that one farm/cattle building is enough per province, especially once you get growth bonus research and stuff, and you don't need very many military production provinces, considering you can just build an army in Reikland and send it off anywhere pretty quickly. Walls are very important, though.

So? The cash isn't doing any good sitting in your bank account. Ending each turn with basically 0 gold left in your account is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It also cuts down on the idiotic diplomatic requests, as the AI knows how much cash you've got and sends you ridiculous requests for all of it.

You may not have had a confederate option because of some malarkey with your alliances, if wissenland were at war with someone you were allied to (possibly karak norn fucking shits) I think you can't confederate.

legendary vamps done, vargheists are op as fuck especially in sieges where its easy to disengage them, I don't think I ever want to do legendary again with how absolutely crumbly all my skeles were with the morale detritus_combat debuffs. the only stat difference on higher difficulties is lower leadership, which isnt a problem for most factions, but makes Vamps really keen to crumble, what I am getting to with this is that playing vamps on legendary is a lot more annoying that playing any other factions

and I do agree, my first tier one battles with unupgraded zombies and skeletons were painfull. at least it got me really good at unit positioning so the my whole army didn't crumble instantly.

I've found that, while it's annoying to play any faction in legendary battle difficulty because they break easily except for maybe dwarves, Greenskins and VC have it the worst. Greenskins rout pretty much instantly after the initial charge, and VC start crumbling asap, while killing the enemy lord doesn't have nearly as much effect.

Well Chaos dwarfs use blunderbusses and fireglaives (though they are only forge world) which admittedly may not seem much different from thunderers and firedrakes but it'd be easy enough to give the rifles a spread of damage. Greenskins occasionally fight for chaos but its pretty unusual especially for Nurgle.

Build buildings that improve public order. Have one or two agents rotate in areas under your control whose skills are maxed for public order. Try to conquer provinces as quickly as possible so you can declare commandments that improve on public order.
