This spell has gone from having a questionable existence to being straight up hilarious.
It costs barely any FP, and you get long lasting, decently homing projectiles at an almost negligible casting speed so you can have about three in the air at once.
Then it splats on people and does about 300 damage in PvP on a Sorceror with no faith investment, it's honestly not that bad since you can throw in Affinity and then catch people at the end of their role with Dark Edge (which is also now faster).
If anything it's just fun as hell to use, just spamming them juicy deep balls at people.

Yeah I meant vig, my bad. And yeah fights in Bloodborne rarely last more than a couple of seconds, even during invasions. I think having a wider array of weapons and armor would be better for a low HP event, who knows, heavy armor might even help there.
I want to make a spellcasting invader, which of the 3 schools would work best at a medium SL, say 40-80? I'm leaning more towards miracles or sorcery than pyromancy but if I can get a better build with a pyromancy setup then that's fine too.

As invader, you want full glass cannon. Use obscuring ring and CSS/Soul Stream to one-shot people from the shadows.
You can always level up the other stats if you want to go into dueling later on.

Sorcerors can get rolling at about SL47 if you don't mind having an exploding-knees healthbar. If you're Soul Stream/Soul Spear sniping for invasion PvP then it's perfectly viable, you'll blow up anyone since at that level people haven't fully invested in their Vigor.
Arguably Sorcerors are straight up OP at this level, but if you want to do a more Spellsword orientated build then you'll have to go up to 80 to get all the related weapon stats and enough health to survive a light breeze.
A pure offensive Miracle caster can be made at about SL46, though Miracles tend to be a bit more on the close range side of things even for stuff like Sunlight Spear, so running around with only 10 Vigor is questionable. That said the recent buffs to Miracle casting have made it potentially viable.
The other builds need a few more levels typically, Pyromancers need about SL62 to reach maximum scaling potential before you can start investing in health or weapon stats, though you can compromise with 32/32 instead of 40/40, this puts you at SL46 and gives you access to all Dark/Pyromancy spells. Honestly Pyromancy scaling is wonky as fuck in regards to both catalysts and spells, it's really hard to tell how to make them the most efficient.
These are all just minimum levels to shoot for, you can level up to fulfill certain needs as you see fit. Almost all magic builds can be fully effective at SL80.

Not him, but Raw Astora Sword is pretty much equal to quality builds at that level.
Also, for invasion you kinda have to be a glasscannon. An extra 500 HP won't save you from three sunbros with dark swords. You need a one-shot build. I mean, you can always drop a few int points, but you haven't got much room to maneuver.

For low int mages I recommend just using a Rapier, they're usable right out of the box.
Alternatively you can level up Strength to 8 and use an Enchanted Shortsword, or since you have 13 Dex just look at all the weapons and see if any could be two-handed.
Really though for a caster at that level you should be relying on your spells, with enough Ashtus and not wasting FP on expensive stuff, it will take you a while to really run out.

I haven't used the flashsword enough to form a real opinion of it, but I've heard that it's weaker than a regular Straight Sword and easier to parry. Maybe just a regular rapier would do the job, don't need to invest stats and it's mostly just for a poke or two, not making a melee sorcerer.

Unless the patch changed something, Magic Clutch ring is trash. It's only useful for low level sniping builds.
You're better off using Lloyd's Sword Ring to start (buffs spell damage including the Soulmass spells) and then switching out to something later on in a fight that will actually help with close range battle.

Except that you're drawing from a bunch of different staffs there. at INT levels that aren't relevant for one-shot builds. You're never going to use Heretics staff at 40 INT for a one-shot build.
Notice how scaling drops on every staff except the Court Sorcerer's after 40 INT, which is the one you actually want to use. It's final increase of 108 over 10 levels is the largest it has.

That' not Court Sorcerer's Staff. That Heretic's Staff, a midgame staff that is useless for one-shot builds, because anyone with 20 vig (ie everyone) will walk off you shit at that SL.
Court Sorcerer's is the only relevant staff for one-shot builds, and it's biggest buff is from 50 to 60 INT.

Even if that were not the case, the extra damage from 50-60 is still hugely important in terms of getting kills you otherwise wouldn't, or doing more damage with less spells and thus you and up needing to use Ashen Estus less often and it makes your attunement investment more efficient.
Never build a fucking Sorcerer without 60 Int, unless you're doing 55 Int + Scholar Ring.

Twinksorcs use Crystal Soul Spear and Soul Stream.
Past that it's up to choice. Homing Soulmass is pretty core, Farron Flashsword and Farron Dart are good for duels. Farron Hail is good if you can free-aim it since it hits the floor far too often. Soul Greatsword cast speed was buffed so it's a bit better and very nice at hitting people who think they can just pivot round you.
Soul Stream can be cancelled now so it's a bit better, but unless you're just going for style points shooting a CSS into a crowd of people is better, and without some sick free-aiming you will never land that shit in 1v1.
Great Deep Soul is also super good now, costs barely any FP and casts quickly so if anyone gets too far away they can have three of them on their ass whilst you close in. Respectable damage despite its spammability.
Dark Edge is still kinda meh as its only use is surprise attacks on groups of enemies or catching people at the end of their roll. People tend to ignore Dark Magic under the assumption you need Faith but with the pure spell amp from Court Sorcerer, but I think it's pretty good if you're at lower levels.

You're going to have a very tough time invading with 40 int. Because not only are you dealing mediocre damage, you also don't have access to Crystal Soul Spear or Soul Stream. The spells that are literally key to a one-shot build.

Flynn's uses whacko coding so I don't think increases your Vigor even does anything.
It's a trash ring, there is always something better to replace it. You'll get similar damage in scaling from just throwing on a Pillar ring, or using Lloyd's Sword Ring. In the case of Flynn's it's designed for a flat bonus on quick weapons, but Pontiff's Eye does the same thing.
Especially in the case of builds that rely on attacking fast, they are often just hollow bleed builds and why are more interested in other things since all their damage comes from the number of attacks (bleed), not the damage they deal.

There is honestly no benefit to being a Dragon except as a counter to Greatshields, and even then it doesn't work and you need to fuck around removing your clothes in your inventory instead of just pressing your Dragon Torso stone to transform on demand.

In DaS2 they have 140 counter damage, that plus leo and flynn's means you'll be dealing 400 to 500 damage UNBUFFED to bosses. Add a resin and you have a chainsaw of murder with low stamina cost and huge reach.
In DaS3 they still retain their stupid ass low stamina cost, but this time there's a different mechanic with counters that take enemy thrusting resistance to negative levels. So if you counterhit enemies with a thrusting sword, you'll be dealing almost double the damage. You get the leo ring for free about 40% into the game. They also deal the same amount of poise damage as straight swords but can swing more and faster, however they can't stagger anymore since last patch, so if you want staggering you'll have to switch to left hand and mash L2.

Well, the Estoc did get an attack speed and stamina consumption nerf, but it's not that bad.
Besides, there are many other types of DEX weapons you can use, and as your DEX gets higher, so will your weapon.
Make sure to make your weapons sharp if you are solely focusing on DEX.
