hello guys. I have a request for the indie devs here.

I am looking to interview indie game developers on PR and communicating with their team, their audience, and the local gaming blogs that cover them. Whether or not you are shilling your game, how you manage your social networks, these are all questions I am looking to get answered. I know a lot of you want to remain anonymous but links to your game/brand's website and personal stories help immensely. I'm writing a piece on how a indie developers should interact with the people around them.

Thanks guys!
>>
>>145125728

AJ Tilley's Summer Fling was released first on Nutaku before any other platform. Sakura Dungeon did the same thing. Is it possible that Nutaku is giving them some financial incentive to do that?
>>
I am seeing this a lot and I want to rant about it, because why not?

"Hi, I want to get into writing for VNs, how do I do that?"
"Well, you write a VN."
"Sure, sure. But how can I do that?"
"Oh, well, are you writing a linear game or a branching game or what? I can give you tips on how I do it."
"No, no, no, that's not what I mean, I mean, how do I get into writing for VNs?"
"Well... look for people looking for writers. Some artists have ideas, but aren't confident in their writing."
"I don't want to work on someone else's ideas."
"Then post that you're a writer looking for artists."
"I actually really want an established team to work with."
"Right. So you want an already established team to take you on to write your ideas."
"Yeah."
"And you don't have any prior experience."
"Not yet. So, how much do people usually pay writers?"
"..."

>>
>>145134247
>giving VNsNow a game key for him to shit all over your "cum on the waifu" game

you were asking for that bad review really.
>>
>>145134485
A reviewer that's sure to say that your game's shit, because it's not to their taste personally, isn't someone you'd want to review your game. If you're making a fanservice game, then giving a key to a SJW reviewer isn't going to give you good results.
>>
>>145134485
Give your game to Lets Players who actually play visual novels, yo.
>>
>>145131328
who could know that? the only devs working with them are WC and AJtilley, who also happen to be the most successful EVN devs at the moment, and might get special treatment that other devs would not.

i'll wait and see if devs flee for the hills like they did with MG.
>>
>>145135653
See, I don't get being happy about LPers playing through your ENTIRE vn and showing everyone, every single route and everything.

It's not like a non-evn game where the people who watch those LPs want to buy the game so they can experience the fun of playing the game. You don't play evns as much as you read them to their completion and when LPers do that for your game, their audience will be like "well that satisfied my curiosity and I know everything that happens, now I don't have to buy it :D"

still, useless to fight back against LPers from doing your vn, so I see it as a losing situation.
>>
>>145135653
does high LPs of evns correlate with how many units evns sell?
>>
>>145135962
Wrong. People who would have an interest in playing your VN will, a lot of the time, stop watching something to avoid spoilers.

People with a mentality like yours are the reason Root Double can't have half of it streamed or put on Youtube, and nobody knows about Root Double as a result.
>>
>>145135831
They didn't "flee for the hills" from MG. Most all-ages games don't sell well for them and they decided to discontinue selling them on their store, since those games weren't generating revenue.

As for Winged Cloud, then ditched Sekai Project, went to MangaGamer, then when MangaGamer's payment processor was down, announced that they were back with Sekai Project. It's obvious that Winged Cloud is difficult to work with.
>>
>>145136245
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
>>
>>145136089
>>145136245
If your VN is fairly short and especially if it's kinetic, then the lets play won't increase sales.
>>
>>145136245
Most people want to see the entire playthrough as a "free demo" of the game. And why pay $30+ for something you just experienced for free? The watchers are the youtubers fans, not people who are invested in supporting the industry. The number of people who whine if they can't see the entire game on youtube is staggering.
>>
>>145137972
is there something in the contract of either SP or MG that says "you cannot sell your games anywhere else but with us"?
>>
>>145139892
I think Sekai wants it to be on a platform they can publisher money from, while MangaGamer doesn't seem to have any such restriction, since AJ Tilley's games and Huniepop were never restricted to MG's site. And they even gave Steam users the free 18+ patch, basically eliminating the main reason to buy the version on MangaGamer's site anyway.
>>
>>145140358
I don't know why you would team with Sekai then instead of MG. MG seems like a better deal.

That happens with people "trying" to learn art as as well. They'll go to some community, not even start doing exercises for fundamentals or sketch for fun and ask "How do I learn how to draw?".

I think it's just that people want something special to do, find one thing that looks sort of low effort to them and then they're not cognitive enough to realise that what they're really looking for is for other people to give meaning to their lives.

It depends on the interview, what's covered, how much work it is, what the interviewee gets out of it, and how generous they feel.

I'm usually willing to answer a few vague questions when they're clearly for a college paper (you can usually tell by the questions, the way they're phrased and how little sense they make). I answer a few more specific questions for publicity purposes, though I'll pick what I say.

That's different than expecting a professional to give you detailed instructions on how to succeed in their business.
>>
>>145134247
Giving someone a review key does not and should not guarantee a positive review. That WOULD be unethical games journalism.

Obviously you can skew things in your favor by picking reviewers who appear to like the kind of game you are making.

But sometimes, shit happens and your award-winning game lands in the lap of someone who does not get it and publishes "This is complete shit with no gameplay and I odn't understand why anyone would play it ever, 1/5".

And then you just suck it up and deal.
>>
>>145138231
People who post in the comments on the LP saying that they went ahead and bought the game? Particularly when the LP is slow and they don't want to wait.
>>
>>145139892
Generally that's how a publisher contract works. You can't sell the game on your own elsewhere unless you've worked out exceptions with them.

It's certainly possible to get into a less-exclusive arrangement if both parties are up for it, or at least to keep the rights to do certain things like sell on your own website or sell CDs at conventions, but it's all in what both parties agree to.

If someone sends you a contract you ARE supposed to look it over and make suggestions for changes before you sign it.
>>
>>145161452
I know I've personally bought games because of LPs. Even when they played the entire game. Of course, the opposite is also true - a game I might have picked up on sale ended up not getting bought thanks to a LP, but I'd already made that decision before they finished the first route. The LPer playing only part of a route wouldn't have made me more likely to pick it up. But, hey, most of those were Winter Wolves games and I already knew I wasn't really impressed before the start of the LP. (And I ended up getting most of those games in bundles anyway.)

I've seen plenty of story-rich games get comments along the lines of, "I stopped watching here because I don't to spoil it for myself for my own game - looking forward to catching up with the series after I play!" or "Aaah cliffhanger! Can't wait for the next episode. Buying the game."

Granted, all of these are anecdotes, not empirical studies. But will agree that if yours is a kinetic novel for pay, your chances of getting people to pick up your game after watching a LP is likely lower.

Me, I'll take the risk that some people might pass on buying the game from watching a LP. I think the potential of having someone's fans deciding to support the game is higher than someone who would have bought the game deciding not to because they saw the game played. Some LPer fans make a point of supporting the games their senpai play.

>>145145818
AJ Tilley has released multiple titles under them. And the other devs that no longer use them don't make 18+ titles, and there's no point with non 18+ titles don't sell well for them.

>>145146014
Japanese developers aren't exclusive. MangaGamer is releasing a Frontwing game, even though Frontwing worked with Sekai Project before that. MangaGamer also partnered with Propeller, even they're connected with JAST. JAST promised that Flowers would have a quick release last fall, and they broke that promise, basically eliminating the reason they agreed to work with them.

If you want my advice for coming up with something different, you should look at things that aren't just VN's. There are many aspects that stick out in other things and they could work providing you mix and match. E.g. I liked the map menu in the witcher 3, the map being boxed like that instead of full-size stood out, it had a place for stats I wanted, and I could incorpate a text box at the bottom for the VN. Does it look like it was designed for that? Hell no, but it could definitely work fairly good like that if I wanted it to.

why do people use ellipses in typed conversations?

it makes sense to use them when you're writing character dialogue, since it lets the reader know when the speaker is taking pauses in what they're saying, but when you're typing it doesn't add anything at all

sorry to disappoint you, but I've been here longer than that

I honestly don't see the point of trying to convey hesitance like that in a typed conversation, since what you put into a text medium is only visible once you finish it and submit it- this is different from a spoken conversation, where pauses like that would be natural, but when you're typing your words all you do by adding a "..." is add in something that doesn't need to be there

all you really need to do through text is say exactly what you mean, not take pauses and mull things over before speaking

if you wanna act like a bitch about it though that's your prerogative
>>
>>145205373

why bother using periods in a place like this? this is an imageboard, full of people discussing video games

if you're posting a sample of your writing it makes total sense to fancy it up and make sure you've paid attention to every detail, but in a casual conversation why would you do such a thing? I mean, sure, I can type properly. but what's really the point?

it's not like I'm raking people over the coals for using ellipses, I'm asking why they even care about doing it in the first place since it makes no sense in a context like this
>>
>>145210237

>>
>>145209646
>say exactly what you mean
Are you not comprehending? How do I convey my pause or tone? Emphasis? Why would I want to come across as monotonous, even if it's just text?

Did you not read the other anons comment about impression?
"Oh... wow!" unexpected, excited
"Oh... wow." unexpected, sarcastic/unsurprised.
"oh wow." any of those??? tone or impression isn't coming through with your OPINION here.

You're not writing an essay man, you're voicing your opinion. Sure, you won't convey your tone to everyone, but for those that catch on it makes it worth reading, and if they don't catch on, well you're stuck with your point of view. Why do reviewers that try to include tone and emphasis in their text have a better fanbase? Cuz it matters.
>>
>>145202487
I see what you mean - I had trouble rendering it so it looked like she had roots showing without putting that much detail and I was trying not to over-do it with the shading on the face, which is something I had feedback on in the past. I guess I should try and balance that stuff more in the future.

>>145203356
Thanks for the edit. :) I'll see if I can experiment with her a bit more and make it look less unbalanced.

>>145204608
The colour choices or the style itself? Obviously, if you don't like the style it's fine, but the description of the character did entail certain things that I can't change, essentially.
>>
>>145213154
Not the style, I can't say your style is bad at all, it's more a mix of the actual characters design and the colours yeah. With that exact sprite, changing nothing else, i can say a different and longer hairstyle would look a lot better with that face - do you get where I'm going? It's not that you're bad it's that there's a mix of things that don't gel that well together. If you can't change the sprite that's fine, and sometimes you just get work from a client that isnt good but you have to do it. I'd suggest roughly playing around with ideas next time, even if it's not /exactly/ what the client was after. As it stands the sprite is acceptable but in terms of design appeal poor.

Oh, the client is really good, I'm not trying to shift the blame on her. I think you're right and I should probably experiment more with the reference or description until I get a few variations instead.

However, the precise shade of pink is definitely my fault, so I'm working on a alternate version in case my commissioner would like it better. I wouldn't want a poor choice on my part to reflect badly on her. Thanks for the feedback!
>>
>>145214920
It's definitely one of those learning moments. Just remember that your art style is actually pretty good, what we do with our style sometimes just doesn't always work out as good as we thought. If anything, definitely try out different ideas before finalising. And remember that facial shape can play a huge role, in personality and in features (there is a reason hairdressers can fuck up). Eyes shapes are also good to play with, I forget whether your other images have big eyes like this one. But don't be afraid to play with the size.

>There are unwritten taboos on the internet. There are things you Don’t Say. There are replies you may not give. There are comments you may not make. There are truths you may not tell, in the world of public relations, for the public are fickle, and behave as a mob. A mob in all its feral, brutal depravity, lacking any and all of the qualities we laud upon humanity that allow us to feel so smug over all of the hapless animals that we raise ourselves over. And we are all, whether we admit it or not in public, under strict censorship of the mob. Even admitting that the mob censors our thoughts and feelings and the expression thereof is risky.

Bless the Internet, but it seems that so many readers turned up to the blog post actually wanting to have a fight and somehow read the post as if it had been specifically written about them, for them. I’m afraid this is not how sardonic rhetoric speech works, and none of us are so important as to seriously believe somebody would write a random blog post on a two-bit backwater indie game developer’s site that was actually addressed directly to us, now, would they?

>You're equal to nazis who killed 6 million people

Yea that's why no one takes you fuckers seriously, because you can't make sane arguments.
>>
By estimate, how many game ideas do you have written down that you hope to work on one day?
>>
>>145237365

I'm just a largely incompetent evn dev who's been watching it unfold from the sidelines, so I'm not sure which fuckers you are referring to.

I never equated the movement with WWII era nazism, and I agree that that is an unfair and ludicrous comparison. I also never said they were equal to terrorists who killed three thousand people, merely that I do label the more extreme reactions of some of the group members as terrorism.

Of course, I also don't believe that merely disagreeing with a blogger is terrorism, as any sane person would. But that's not what I was talking about. I am specifically saying that calling a SWAT team on people whose political beiefs you disagree with, in an attept to intimidate them, is terrorism. You might disagree, but I think that labelling that argument insane is a bit far-fetched.
>>
>>145241951

Right, and you cannot ignore that when GG started, it was about people exposing fraud and conflicts of interest and those people who were exposed compared those whistle blowers with literal nazis and terrorists.

Use whatever rationale you want, but using terrorism to shut down arguments of people disagreeing with you is not just childish, it devalues the seriousness of actual terrorism.
>>
>>145239540
Too many to get around to them all. I wish human life was longer. Worried about dying before I can finish them.
>>
>>145242932

Regardless of what GG was when it began, it became what it became. I am also not someone comparing the early whistleblowers with literal nazis and terrorists, as I have said before. As I see it, Electronic Arts might have started life as a publisher with good intentions, but they eventually became what they are today. The same applies to GG.

I'm also not crying terrorism to shut down argument - I am using it to shut down SWAT teams being called on people in order to shut down their arguments. Which, as it happens, is not only childish, but has the potential to be as serious as actual terrorism should someone be injured in the process.

If you have any kind of rationale to justify that kind of action, I would be eager to hear it.

>>
>>145248598

A unique and well-written character.
>>
>>145250469
Actually I can kinda understand where that whole idea could be coming from, author-wise. An all-ages game would have a higher-quality of writing overall because porn scenes around 85-99% of the time have at least one dodgy thought or sentence or phrase that can ruin the entire scene or mood you're going for. Less likely to happen if you're just doing handholding scenes instead of ones where you have to describe tab A going into slot B or tabs/slots A and B rubbing against each other slowly, savoring the electric sparks igniting as their fingers roam each other's body and their breathless moans become faster and more keening with every roll of their hips.
Even that blurb was ruined by "more keening" which probably isn't an actual phrase. Compare that to "our hands came together slowly, fingers intertwined and fittingly snugly together as if we were made for each other." which is still dodgy but doesn't go quite from 100 to 0 like the porn one does/can.
So if I was a writer, I would definitely prefer the all-ages version as opposed to an official porn game even if I do want sex in it just to ensure the overall quality remains high. If someone told me "we're going to have two versions and you gotta write good sex for one of them" I'd go "well fuck. I guess if we gotta for the porn money." and be more worried than if it was only g/pg rated shit.
You can always just go under a fake name and write explicit fan fiction for those characters if you do want other people to see those scenes without risking it bringing down the actual project quality.
That's just my 2 cents though.
>>
>>145251407
I said a dating sim character, wiseguy, not your literature classics.

>>145251407
>>145251407
>>145251407
Look at this guy everybody, wanting good writing in his games. What's next, you'll want good art? Good music? No game-breaking bugs?
Get outta here with that.
>>
>>145251474

Porn scenes contain next to no literary value, as they are designed purely to titillate. By design, they fall outside the traditional bounds of good writing.

However that does not apply to sex in all contexts. The level of intamacy achieved during intercourse is basically unmatched, and can present a particularly powerful emotional climax (hurr hurr). It's rare to see VNs go this root (hurr) though, so yes, quite often sex scenes are shallow schlock for schlicking cocks.

For all that, well written sex scenes do occur in VNs. issues such as rating will obviously affect their inclusion, but there is no intrinsic reason to avoid them. All forms of good writing are challenging, and sex is no different.
>>
>>145252118
I guess my post didn't get what I was trying to say across well enough.
It's not that it's impossible to make it good writing, it's that it's a lot easier to fuck up. You write a kind of boring action scene, it's still salvageable or at worst they forget it as they read the rest of the game. You write a bad fucking scene, someone's going to laugh their ass off or get grossed out (or my personal favorite emotion when I read bad sex: both) but not feel what you want and could even ruin the rest of the game if it sticks in their mind enough. And it's easier for that to happen with sex than a fight just because you're more used to one than the other in other media.
Does that make more sense?
So I'd personally want to go with something that's less likely to fuck up the official game than something that can, even if it might be content I want to write, because I know it's safer. I can always just do the risky content in another vehicle (fan fiction, just writing smut myself and never releasing it, etc.)
I'm sure Stephen King or Neil Gaiman have some weird fetishes because very few people don't. But I doubt they put them in their works. Like if Stephen King died and they found a bunch of inflation-fetish fanfiction of Rose Madder hidden under a floorboard or a version of Stardust that was just pure fucking while on his quest, I wouldn't be surprised. So that's how I can kind of see where someone would get an "a porn version is less likely the version a writer would want to officially release than a non-porn one" idea from. Most people would want the safer option, I would think.
>>
>>145253185

That's laziness, though. Not including a sex scene because you think it's badly written is one thing, but avoiding sex all together because it's hard to write is just limitig yourself, and guaranteeing you will never improve. If that's someone's justification for going all-ages, then it reflects very poorly on them as a writer.

I'm not sure what you're getting at in your last paragraph - having an uncommon fetish does not preclude people from writing a vanilla sex scene either.
>>
>>145253772
It's less laziness and more picking the safest, best option for me. To use a relatABLE analogy (though not 100% related) I personally have to support my family.
Could I have my dream job if I worked hard enough? Sure. But how will my family eat while I'm reaching for that sky? This other job pays the helps me feed my family. Would I want that dream job instead if it was 100% safe? Of course. But is that realistic? Fuck no.

A lot of people put tons of work into their games. They do legwork: tracking down artists and musicians and other writers and programmers, or even doing it all themselves. They spend months writing as best they can. They put so much work into these commercial (let's assume commercial since the argument was about commercial games to begin with) games hoping to make a profit or at the very least have players enjoy it.
Is it really better to risk that profit/the quality just to add something you might want to see/try but you know is a definite risk (more a risk than others)?
Why not save that for something personal you don't have to worry about making money off of?
That's why the idea that a writer might be talked into including porn scenes could be valid. Saying it's just lazy that an author doesn't want to risk putting in that porn is ignoring a very valid concern when it comes to audience acceptance, enjoyment, game quality, and etc. etc. Do I want every single idea I have for it to improve my game? Of course. Will it? Of course not. You have to know when to take the safe roads and trim the fat.

You might have a point when it comes to free games that are "a labor of love" and serves a specific creator goal for what they want, but even then it's not just laziness that would make someone change or not include types of content to ensure the whole game is good.

Don't really know how to put the idea in simpler terms than that.
>>
>>145254783

Ah, I see. Yeah, if you're shooting for a commercial project, then that's going to affect whether you include them.
>>
>>145255273
Yeah. Plus some stuff you don't want associated with your "name". Especially in Japan where you gotta have 8 different pseudonyms for all the different levels of fucked up your game might end up in.
>>
I think you guys worry too much. Sure, abstaining from including weird furry shit in your game is understandable, but worrying about simple vanilla sentences seems a bit too much for me. So what if people comment about the weird mollusk references in your sex scenes? Fate still sold like pankakes.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have boundaries, just... don't be too scared. Nitpickes gonna nitpick and ordinary readers are gonna 'meh' unless it's seriously fucked up. Personally I wouldn't be able to write at all if I fretted over how would the customer react to every single line.
>>
>>145235432

I like the tease in the regular CGs but there's actually more scenes in the 18+ version.

it's fantastic.

Does it even count as a VN?

Depends on what you're looking for, I guess. If you are expecting an amazing story, you'll be disappointed. If you want a lewd dungeon crawler or yuri, you'll probably like it.

If you've played demon master chris, it's almost identical in gameplay to that.

I keep seeing recruitment threads looking for writers, programmers, artists, proofreaders all at once.
Why would you need all of the roles covered?

If you are an idea man with money.

Because you're an Idea Guy and work is beneath you

I'm not sure that someone who talks to magazines is really that harmless. I'm expecting he's probably plotting something sinister.

So, since making visual novels with existing charactersprites and music is illegal, (even if you just want to release it as freeware, and even though it's far more original than recording a video of you playing one,) how would you go about getting feedback for, and getting people interested in that kind of project?
>>

Why would you even do that? The only useful feedback would be on writing, which you can get by posting it separately.

By talking about it on boards like this where no one really cares?

Very few people actually care unless you're trying to sell stolen resources, but they are required to officially condemn you lest they be accused of abetting copyright infringement or something. So talk about it on boards that already don't care about that.
