Rook and Montagne.
Rook has great guns on defense (SG-CQB is a fucking monster at holding chokepoints, the P90 is goddamn bullet hose, and the MP5 is a certified laser pistol) and is almost never not a good option with his ability. Secondary is Bandit. He's just too versatile with his ability to hard counter TWO operators at once and his great roaming with a laser SMG and a scattercannon shotty.
Offense is Montagne, god he's my shit. I have 350 hours, 100 of those are idle grind, but of those 250 hours I have almost 60 hours with Montagne. He's a great pick in any game mode and can be multiple roles (flanker, disrupter, protector). My only issue is my love/hate relationship with the P9. I get so many whiffed headshots with that gun it's ridiculous. Second would be Thatcher or Buck, but I hardly play anyone but Monty on offense unless the team really needs it.

Montagne? He has smoke which is great for area control and serves as a better distraction. He can defend a downed teammate, cut off doorways, punish people that corner themselves, stall out secure games, make bomb protecting trivial, and so on. He's just incredibly strong if you play him as an objective-based support. You're not there to get kills, you're there to complete the objective or help your teammates do it. Blitz is more of a skirmisher type shield, and Fuze barely counts as a shield operator, but Montagne is really well balanced right now I think. His guns and ability do nothing to make him a good offensive operator, he's practically a defense operator on offense, which can help when you need to hold down areas or cover your teammates. I've noticed that people don't challenge a Montagne if you cover a flank, they just try to wait you out. But cutting off that flank and posing as a potential threat if they get cocky is incredibly potent.

Being a newbie, you would actually be better served by not using shotguns probably, as you probably still don't know the good spots where you will have chokes and advantages, good kill holes, etc
Shotguns are good in all around close quarters maps (like House, Plane, Border), and maps that are very destructible. If you can pick your spawn (like in Ranked), then they can also be good in other maps that aren't necessarily too close quarters just because you know which objective you're gonna pick to defend that round and where you'll be roaming or hanging out at.
SMG's and AR's are good all-rounders and more versatile. Shotguns are more specialized tools that you should use when you know you're going to take advantage of them to their fullest potential

Peekers advantage will always be a thing but you can refine it.
CS:GO when it first came out for the first year had terrible peekers advantage. It has to do in part with how the POV "ghost" of the player is set up. In siege its not even aligned with the model meaning that you get about 100 miliseconds delay from when your POV peeks and when your model actually peeks.
This can easily be refined to make it so peekers advantage isnt as big of a deal as it is.I feel like the eye adjusting when brightness levels are different also needs to be fixed

Deployable shields are made useful mang. In some cheeky angles they can prevent all passage, or at least prevent peeks and put the attackers at a major disadvantage. In others, it forces them to vault over into a trap, and if they have to shoot the trap they can't shoot you
