It's not all that bad if you don't mind pre-WoW MMOs. I missed the heyday myself and only started playing retail in 2010.
The content is staggering though, and if you find a decent party or group to do levelling and missions with, then the game is fucking incredible.
This is the busiest private server I've seen (around 500 players peak) so if you're a SWG or FF fan in general, I say give it a go, just don't let the first 15 levels put you off, as it's slow going.

Expect an MMORPG that doesn't hold your hand at all and have the FFXI wiki up to refer to.
Some people like games where you can switch off your brain, FFXI doesn't fuck around though.
