I feel it was smart of me to pick Deprived for DS3, cause it forced me to get good at dodging Gundyr. Following that, I think the only reason I beat Vordt on my first try was thanks to dodging.

I feel like they deliberately made the hybrid casting tool/weapons weak and shitty because they were worried that having faster, more viable spells like flashsword and great dart would be too good on a melee spellcaster build like that, and obviously knew they weren't going to have time to properly balance magic before release.
I expect we'll get more interesting casting tool weapons in the DLCs, though I don't expect the Blue Flames themselves to make a comeback since their lore was kind of a dead end.

What? Actually do the math anon: it only comes out bad if you have nothing to put the vit towards but armor like in pic related. If you're using all fifteen points it adds, it offers more net return than a +5 ring. You might not need any stat points in the first place if you're 120, but that doesn't mean the ring is bad, it just means your meta in particular doesn't require it, the same way a faith build wouldn't need a bellowing dragoncrest ring.
If you're wearing fallen/elite knight weight armor or higher, the amount of penalty the chain adds will decrease. The higher your absorption is, the larger of a downscale penalty it gets, even with no negative rings. So by lowering it with a ring, you're lowering the penalty, causing your actual penalty from the ring to appear as less than you would expect. With something like elite knight, it'll only show a 7%ish penalty on your physical resistances.
In PvP, the penalty is roughly 1.5 times higher than shown. So, 7 times 1.5, rounding up even, is going to be a 11% penalty to absorption.
If you're at 27 vig and let it add 5 vig, you get 9% HP and 10 stat points for around an 11% penalty, meaning that in terms of your total HP vs total damage taken, you're only getting a net 2% penalty for 10 stat points.
If you're already at 32 vig and let it add 5 vig, you're getting 7% more HP than you otherwise would have with the same 11% penalty, meaning you're taking a net loss of 4% for 10 stat points.
The only scenario where it's downright inferior to +5 rings is when you don't need the equipload, because in that case you're getting only +5 points for a penalty when you could just get +5 points for free. I suppose it could also be bad on healing builds, since by increasing HP and dmg taken at the same time without increasing dmg healed, you're lowering the amount of HP bar each heal fills.

To further elaborate upon my point. My "ideal level" for pvp will increase when the DLCs come out, as it becomes more and more reasonable to reach levels like 100 and 120 without going into NG+. To be honest, I think 80 chokes out a lot of creativity and limits builds a ton, but I also think the idea of builds becoming higher level and thus more complex in PVP as the DLCs come out and further the metagame with more tools and more level to utilize those tools with is an awesome idea.

If you aren't already adding life and favor, the levels you're adding only give you 267 more HP, a 21% increase in health for 13 points.
If you equipped a life ring +3 you could drop down to 33 vig and have more HP, but your ring situation changes how much of an option that is.

I'm playing through DaS1 for the first time right now, and I'm trying to understand the upgrade system. Particularly whether or not I should ascend a weapon to lightning or with fire instead. For some context, I just received the Lordvessel.
I'm playing a pure strength build, made the Golem Axe but I kinda wanna use a straight sword or greatsword, so I'm trying to figure out what I can use, realizing that a lot of the stuff I can craft either requires Int, Faith, or both, which I greatly lack.
tl;dr what's a good weapon for a strength build in DaS1 and should I be doing fire, lightning, or standard upgrades? I'm still under 40 strength.
The souls sequels are probably the 2 most disappointing games ever made

Fire and lightning remove ALL scaling from a weapon. If you're going to use them, only go as far as the base requirements of a weapon. They can still be useful against certain enemies and in your case you'd have to do some math in certain cases to see whether they're worth it or not, but for now, going standerd and using gold/charcoal pine resins is plain better most of times.

Pretty cancerous. The current meta most closely resembles early DaS2's monscim meta, but thanks to the hornet ring, ripostes are always guaranteed instantkills. Outside of parry fishing with the monscim 2.0, the meta mostly revolves around a few disproportionally efficient weapons that have exceptionally high damage gimmick attacks. Fights are mostly decided by aggressively trading with a top-tier weapon that slightly outdamages the opposing top-tier weapon, or by rollcatching because every single top-tier weapon lacks punishable recovery.
Twitch shitters emphasize the importance of spacing, but most of them don't space well and rely mostly on simply mashing weaker builds to death, or playing the same turbopassive spinner game from late DaS2 and winning purely by waiting for the opposition to make punishable mistakes.
Every single top-tier weapon can mash R1 with very low stamina costs to completely lock down space with perfect tracking. The only thing that curbs the raw power of unrepentant mashing with a top-tier meta weapon is the ridiculous ease of parrying.
I guess the best way to describe the current meta is as if Bloodborne had monscim parries and 5 variations of the saif and rakuyo.

Stick with standard upgrades if you've invested in Str/Dex. Lighting and Fire are both only good if you have the base requirements for your weapon.
If you want a greatsword that's good for Str, try getting the Manserpent Greatsword to drop in Sens. It drops from the sword & shield snake guys.

What's a fun weapon to pair with sorcery? I feel like the estoc would be pretty strong but I won't have much aoe until I get the flashsword, and that kinda sucks imo. A raw astora straight sword would be pretty strong and buffable too but I'm tired of straight swords. Maybe a corvian knife?
In the same vein, what's a good setup? If I don't use a shield, staff in left hand and weapon in right seems the most optimal, but as a mage I think I'd ba safe with a shield and staff in the right hand, but then I can't buff my weapon...

Why is the Dark Hand so shit? It sucks as a shield, even for projectiles, and the life drain is useless in PvE. In PvP it's way too slow to catch anyone and even if you do it barely hurt.

Your poise is shit, the MoM is very good, parrying dagger is hot trash, Demon UGS is worse than the Zweihander because it doesn't stunlock (but stunlocking doesn't matter when your opponent knows how to toggle), pyromancy with low dex casts very slow, and you look like shit. (very important)

2/3 of the options are available in either game. Obviously it's not perfect, but weapon spam in 2&3 (especially 3) is not really a big issue once you become familiar with pvp.
Zoning will always be applicable, and now with hyper armour there is yet another way of punishing r1 spammers.
