The game being a direct sequel doesn't affect it's enjoyment for me.
The quality of the game rather, as a product, the way it challenges the player and introduces them.
I consider Bloodborne to have the smoothest combat, and best tonality.
I consider dark souls 1 to have the most twisting and enrapturing world design that draws players in like no other in the series.
I consider dark souls 3 to have the best pacing, that both introduces players to the games world, and test them as they continue onwards, climaxing with the end game, something I feel no other game in the series does.
But with Dark Souls 2? There are great aspects, but it feels a bit bloated, and demons souls is slightly limp nowadays in comparison to the new games, a lot of the bosses fall flat and the music isn't as great.
I've never really understood the "direct sequels" criticism.

I mean if you think about it, they had to have a meeting about that shit. Someone had to present that idea to a committee of board members and get it approved. Someone had to code it, someone had to make the art and the sound design for when it's thrown. They had to figure out the mechanics of how big the poopsplosion would be, how much toxic damage would be balanced, etc.
This was not a simple feat. A lot of thought must have gone into putting throwable poop in the game. Someone high-up had to say "you know what this game needs? Throwable poop. No, we can't finish this game unless we have throwable poop, we NEED that in this game!" And then they needed a group of adults to hear this and go "yeah you're right, this game DOES absolutely need throwable poop! We can't release the game until it is created and tested!"

those bosses only get worse in later playthroughs, as they do and take more damage.
1 reason i feel ds3 is only slightly above ds2. since normal combat against standard enemies and bosses is more cheesy than fun. cause lets give all the enemies Combos, hyper armor during those combos, and super fast first attacks that fuck you unless your using a straight sword or rapier.

these are pvp problems, not invasion problems. although I suppose in "honorabru" duels sometimes you don't have to deal with estus punishing. I get estus too, and have more sips than them if I invade early enough, so I don't care.
