How is 684 degen/s at level 20 a lot? ED does 809 at the same level. And it's certainly easier to scale chaos/DoT than it is to scale cold/DoT. Penetration also doesn't work on DoT so you have to lower resistances through EE/Curses to get even close to ED's degen.

The text: Modifiers to spell damage also applies to this spells damage over time, on vortex.
Should work the same as Essence Drain, allowing you to scale a poison applied by the tiny initial hit with spell damage.
But the explosion damage is really high, if you convert it to fire and scale the ignite damage with spell damge, which should work in this case, right?

So Vortex is the new top tier leveling skill even if you're not going the frostbalt+vortex meme, right? free chill and the cold degen is a first so it will stack on top of any other degen as well. Even if you don't use it for damage later on, you could use it with CWDT for a free AoE chilling ground which would be very strong defensively if you have AoE nodes.

Your damage from spells comes just from the gem. So unless you're somehow speccing yourself into a specific elementla right at the start of your tree you will do more than enough damage with any spell gem. Especially if you have a +1 gems weapon or get a 4L early.

At the end of the day, you play this game to have fun. Unlike other games/genres, PoE is not very mechanically demanding. You will never be asked to execute 50 actions a second or fight mechanically complex bosses.
So where's the fun? GGG is giving you this skilldrasil, a shit load of skills to play with, seemingly endless possibilities (or the illusion of it). You can build pretty much any character you want and see if it works. That's fun. "Beating" end game content with something you designed yourself is fun. For others it might just be theorycrafting the stupidest, weirdest builds, and see how far they can go.
It caters to a niche audience and that's fine. D3 is on a whole other level because it's a game that asks no thought of you, and where you have 1-2 optimum builds for each class you can switch to on the fly. No complexity, no lasting appeal.
