I think a lot of ideas that were used in the Penders era was very very good. Including the Romance stuff. Although I also feel that he lost his luster when he started actively sabotaging other writers and was being an egotist.I kinda miss the wild free range the comic had before the mandates.

90s comics in general had a lot of shit in them that were charming but not necessarily executed well. The idea of the Egg Grapes is a fine idea that was cheesy enough to be something Eggman would actually make while being one of his most diabolical and devastating creations. However, I cannot agree that the romance was an aspect that was good. If anything romance should only be present in passing at the very most.

This is something only a casual observer would say.
Inking is an entirely different skillset than pencilling and can be extremely difficult, especially when done by hand. It's not just about choosing which pencil lines are important, but also dictating line thickness, fixing errors, determining how much of the shading is left to the colorist, creating art that will actually be readable in color, etc.
It's fucking hard. You want to see how hard, check TSI's poor attempt at re-inking an Endangered Species cover over at the Archie Online forums. Austin was one of the greats, and part of his problem isn't as much that he's not trying as his inking style being suited for the angular, striking style of 80's Marvel rather than the thin, soft curves of modern Architecture Sonic.

The idea that--in a "perfect world" where all pencillers are great at inks--all pencillers should ink their own work is so dismissive towards professional inkers and sounds like a misunderstanding of the entire process. It dismisses inking as if it isn't just as integral as coloring for a finalized, colored page. If we're talking about that kind of ideal, why JUST the inker? I'm saying this again because there is no other reasonable alternative: this HAS to be the opinion of a casual observer. Nobody who has ever inked or colored a piece or art would be this ignorant.
To put this in perspective, we have to remember you're proposing an ideal world where all pencillers do their own inks. You're suggesting that since the inks take the place of the pencils on the final page, the lack of an inker would stop pencils from getting fucked over.
The problem is every other member of the team is just as important. Colors can convey tone, setting, mood, relationships and even levels of action. A bad lettering job can cover up important parts of illustrations and break flow and ruin the reading experience. A bad editor can fuck with the art, add bad effects to the colors, tamper with the script. Shit pencils can be a waste on good inkers and colorists and completely fuck the writer over, and a bad writer can be so vague that it screws the work from the start.
There's nothing wrong with saying "I hate X's inks, the pencillers should do it instead" because that's a judgement on the relative skills of several artists. Suggesting that pencillers should just do their own inks universally is just a ludicrous misunderstanding of how comics work on the level of moronic comments like "Ian shouldn't have to listen to an editor" and "Why do they need a separate person to write the words?"Keep at it with pointless jargon like how "triggered" I am, though. Yeah, that's really the only thing I'm worried about in Mega Drive. Though I pretty sure Ian Flynn realizes that the audience for this book is mostly die-hard Sonic fans, so I think he'll keep things interesting.

The source material for the comics was both of the cartoons: SatAM's setting with AoStH's tone. That's because the comics, if you include the mini-series, predate Sonic 2. The first year, again including the mini-series, predate CD. Sonic 3 came out when the comic proper was already at issue 10, Sonic & Knuckles at issue 18. Keep in mind this is also before the days of the Internet, so information on the games was limited to promotional material, and it was pretty much impossible to get info on Japan-exclusive games. Part of the reason why the Adventure adaption sucked (in addition to having to be shoe-horned into Penders' autism) is that they had to import a Japanese copy of Sonic Adventure and rely on anyone who spoke Japanese because Sega didn't give them info on the story.
So like I said, the comics were originally adaptions of the cartoons, not the games.

The cartoons have the following in common with the games:
Sonic, Tails, and barely rings and Eggman.
Not even these things are depicted the same, especially rings, which function completely differently in satam and don't even exist in aosth besides one episode where they're colored fucking blue. Eggman is renamed Robotnik and has a totally different design and personality. Nothing about the cartoons makes any sense in relation to the games. 99% of the material from the games, from settings to plots to style, are entirely absent, and tons of random shit is thrown in instead.
The comics did take from the games much more, but the representation is all kinds of fucked and it's mixed in with even more bizarre random shit that doesn't make any sense and has zilch in common with the games.

When you're talking about adapting a video game series that has had a grand total of one game with a second in the works and turning it into two syndicated cartoon shows and a monthly comic, sticking to the game material ends up being a very bad thing because it handicaps creativity so much. Granted SatAM probably went too far in the other direction, but it still turned out better than a games-heavy adaptation would've been.

The general message of Sonic was present in Satam and his more cartoon aspect was present in AoStH.
Both the shows and comics worked with what they had and took creative liberties with what was provided. Ian managed to straighten out most of the canon problems in less than 2 years and with the reboot has made it almost exact with the game universe with a few additions.

At which point in the pre-reboot because I remember that when Ian took over he pretty much ignored Tails after House of Cards until the point to where he was actually decaying as a character. Eventually that carried over into the post-reboot and we got something from him in the Sonic Fighters arc but since we've had nothing.
Personally I believe Ian just doesn't like writing or even dealing with Tails and I can't really blame him. The character is essentially mandated to be nothing but a sidekick with barely any personality.

Honestly I like him being an inventor. It gives a more balanced aspect of Team Sonic. You have Sonic with Speed, Knuckles with Strength and Tails with the brains.
I don't think Tails being really smart was ever the problem. The problem was that despite having all this to work with, they never expanded upon him or gave him a goal outside of the immidiate plot or any real aspirations to begin with.
The problem isn't his powers/abilities. The power is that he has nothing defining him as a character other than said abilities.

Well there is a way to give Tails more personality. Just make him like he was in Adventure/Adventure 2. In those games he learns how to be more independent from Sonic and he learns how to be more courageous. The first thing he does in Adventure 2 is break into Prison Island to save Sonic. He's confident, but not overly so, and acts as the strategist of the group. Notice how nearly all the actions that the heroes take in Adventure 2 because of Tails' influence. He frees Sonic from Prison Island, finds out where Eggman and the Chaos Emeralds are, and comes up with a plan to stop the Eclipse Cannon.
Another thing to note about this is that even though he does come up with most of the plans that the heroes follow, he doesn't act as a leader, most of these plans are not orders but suggestions that the heroes follow. So he's a clever strategist and inventor but not a leader, and he can't really think on his feet as proven by how his plan was dismantled in Adventure 2. As for a more defined personally and ambitions, work with what we see in Adventure 1. That is, Tails' goal is to work for the public good by building inventions that help people and stop Eggman. So portray Tails as a kind person that works hard in order to make people happy and to create genuine positive changes in the world. The only problem with these traits are that most of them are already taken by Sally and Rotor, because Tails in SATam was just a useless little child.

Almost every single one of his triumphs in combat was due to him either sucker punching someone or them just not expecting it. Except for the case when he fought Mecha Sally where out of fucking no where he had super strength and for some reason was able to tear through metal with his Tails even though that was never a power he had before or even afterwards.
