Why the knee-jerk shilling? Garbage is still garbage, I don't care about the quantity. I guess you must be right and everyone else must be wrong.

Another example would be all the Fallout New Vegas DLC expansions, which are 5 bucks each and add entirely new campaigns to the game.

The problem is that majority of the stuff that you pay for doesn't even look like it belongs in the game. I understand Jakes point of view about having one or two special snowflakes in the team just to mix it up. But when you design the entire DLC around that concept and then another one right afterwards when the content in the base game was already lacking, that's a pretty damn big let down for most players and the reception has shown that.

EW is 100% worth it, pretty much just an upgrade over EU. I would reccommend an EW camaign first, preferably at Classic difficulty before jumping into LW.

Wow I tried to throw up some comparison in paint but I couldn't prove my statement.

In xcom 2 I always had the feeling that you can reach more cover spots with your soldiers each turn so you don't have to work around empty deathtraps and that the areas on the map are not as defined as in Eu/Ew (This is the vehicle repair shop, stepping on specific tiles will reveal other pods who are outside of it, This is the Parking lot which provides only cover for 2 soldiers and can be flanked easily, etc. Hope I explained it sufficient)

But it seems like this is not the case, the amount of cover is nearly the same in both games. I guess it is because you learn all the pathways on each map in Eu/Ew after a while.

X2 goes for more realistic style decorations while EU/EW is a lot more stylised so it looks like the covers are different when in reality they're fairly similar.

>>144114718
This is nice, we're actually comparing the games instead of shitposting!

I think there's definitely a trade-off to be made in randomly generated maps. On one hand it gives more replayability, on the other the hand-crafted one is always going to look more vivid and alive. I like both for different reasons, but in the end XCOM2 comes out ahead for me, probably because it has better graphics in general. EU's maps are always going to be so darn comfy to go back to though.

I honestly find the seconds games maps more lifelike, feels more detailed and less cartoony
>>
>>144115286
as far as randomly generated levels go, XCOM2 is the best that I've seen in any game

it may not be perfect for pacing the game, especially when you have to rescue a VIP on the other side of the map who happens to be on top of a building and the only way to get to that building is a screens worth of empty space, but the worlds generated by the game feel authentic and not random at all, that's probably the biggest improvement over EU in my opinion

as far as graphics go I'm a sucker for clean aesthetics rather than photorealism so I prefer the way EU looks
>>

Fucking this. Graphically speaking X2 is a big step up, but so much of the designs on both XCOM and the Aliens feel so unimpressive and inferior

I feel like they put all of their effort into characterizing and designing ADVENT and T1 XCOM, and everything else was an afterthought.

Nah, you're just not looking at the ayys enough. If you pay attention a lot of them mesh the human merges with the alien design will really well. Sure theres a few outliers like Mutons but most of them are on par if not better than EU/EW

>>144117498
I disagree with you. The argument that XCOM2 has worse aesthetics than EU is subjective though, isn't it? Visual fidelity on the other hand isn't, that's mostly just numbers

I love XCom 2 as much as the next guy (it's the only one I've played :O) but I do agree that they missed the atmosphere. I would've hoped for a kind of desperation, and way more gloomy. I would have hoped to see the ADVENT oppression and the police state, and the questionable moral decision that comes with an uprising/terrorist movement.

This indeed.

>>
>>144118387
They weren't going for that though, if you look at the earlier concept art they decided against for the spooky oppressive government and instead went for one thats great on the surface but evil underneath.

That kind of dystopia is just as valid as the 1984/Half Life Combine style dystopia
>>
>>144118762
Fair enough I guess. While I do stand by what I said, in that the game lacks an oppressive, desperate feel to it, when I have played the games recently, It has more been to play the game than to appreciate the story which may have led to a kind of plastic, rinse and repeat feel.
>>
>>144119437
>game lacks an oppressive, desperate feel
Becuase they're not going for that, the devs haven't failed or fucked up in not achieving that because they're not aiming for it. That means its entirely your taste that you prefer games in oppressive dystopias to evil behind the scenes dystopias and not an issue with the games tone or atmosphere

But it is, XCOM is an established franchise and it has always borrowed heavily from horror elements which XCOM2 does not.
>>
>>144119642
I wasn't implying that the devs had fucked up or failed, I love the game. I just don't feel the game captures the "Guerilla resistance" theme so well.
>>
>>144119809
Oppressive government =/= horror genre

Also they do go into the horror genre with mainly the Gatekeeper and the eldritch vibe you get from the ending. I'll agree that's not much, but there wasn't much in EU either
>>
>>144119676
Now you know there is an andromedon or a sectopod
>>
I don't understand why people like the mutons from EW more than the ones from Xcom2, the Elites or whatever(the red ones) did look better, but the generic green muton just looked like a big dude in EW, at least the ones in Xcom2 look like Ayys.

On that subject, i never understood why they look more like ayys now that they have human dna.
>>
>>144120161
I agree, Elites looked amazing but Mutons were ridiculously silly. Much more so than anything in X2
>>
>>144119785
Even then I don't see the issue, they clearly haven't aimed for that style of resistence, it feels more like a scrappy rebels than desperate guerillas.

>>144119809
They still have the horror elements in the blacksite and what does an oppressive government have to do with horror and why aren't they allowed to mix things up a bit?

>>144119890
Thats fair, the way you opened and with what you'd replied to I thought you were saying they'd completely failed at atmosphere. my bad

>>144120297
It's always interesting to hear a different point of view senpai.

>>
>>144120297
>it feels more like a scrappy rebels
Not at all really. The only scrap you have is slapping a laser sight on your gun that an advent body dropped off for some reason.
>>
>>144120742
I don't think you understand what I meant by scrappy rebels, I don't mean relying on scrap parts I mean as in determined and not letting anything stop them.
>>
I'm currently playing XCOM EW for the first time (on Classic). I turned both tutorials on. I played through EU years ago but I dont remember much.

Should I get the Scientists or the $200 in my first abduction mission? The scientist mission is where I have my base (in the US) so they cant drop out of the project, while the one with the money is in China, so panic is relevant there.
>>
>>144120987
I don't get that vibe at all when you still have full access to all the military grade equipment and development there is. The fight in EU feels much more desperate than in 2.
>>
>>144118387

>>
>>144121000

>>
>>144121228

One of the reasons some people don't like Xcom2 is because it plays around with a lot of the gameplay concepts from EU/EW and plays quite differently tactics-wise

>>144121493

>>
>>144121730
They are different games. Things like modding support graphics, randomized maps are 100% a step up, and alot of mechanics are arguably and improvement in X2.

But they have different aliens, different tactics, different art styles, different themes, and different a different strategic game.
Yes it will still be xcom, but in no way will you feel like your playing the same game.
>>
>>144121947
How does a scrappy resistance not make sense? Not everything needs to be grim and dark when dealing with rebels and resistances. Does Star Wars not make sense because they're just a tiny little rebel fleet against the Galactic Empire and aren't grim and moody?
