Becuase those seperate weapons in NV existed to fulfill various different niches in the weapon system,because its modding capabilities were so small.

With Fallout 4's far larger and more expansive modding system you need far less base weapons to chive the same number of total effects because you have more mods that do different things.

A good RPG should provide enough weapons/ways to use those weapons to fulfill the various niches needed i nthe gameplay system.

be that take the form of a lot of unmoddable base weapons, or a few highly moddable base weapons, is beyond the fact.

A good RPG should not just have weapons for the sake of having more weapons, because when a game does that, the various stats of those guns often blend together, making your weapon choice increasingly less meaningful and unique.

This. I exposited on this in a general way back, but the weapons in NV represent progression as compared to the weapons in 4 representing potential.
Take, for example, the rifle progression in NV. You start with the varmint rifle, a gun with fairly cheap, readily available ammo. It has a low rate of fire, low capacity, solid range and damage, and can mount a suppressor. You can trade off for a more powerful hunting rifle later, giving up a suppressor for increased range, a slightly higher ROF, and dramatically increased damage. From there you go to the sniper rifle, sharing ammo with the hunting rifle and having higher ROF, capacity, and a suppressor option, before finally being able to trade off for the monstrous .50 Anti-Materiel Rifle, giving up the high ROF and suppression option for devastating damage.

In Fallout 4, you have the dinky bolt-action rifle that, in either pipe or pre-war variants starts in .308. You beef up the receiver, install a suppressor, put a larger mag on, round out the receiver for .50, put a better barrel on it, and fit it with a better stock, and now it's an AMR.

It's essentially the same progression, but involves much fewer weapon swaps. I do miss the old-style progression though. There was always something great about landing a cool gun from a store or a hideout. The really special uniques need to make a comeback.

There are uniques, but there's two problems - They look like regular guns and have very basic legendary effects that aren't really worth the hassle of seeking out.

Just kill a legendary enemy, get the same gun with the same effect, rename it, and there you go.

Yeah, and that's what I miss, the thrill of hunting an actual one-of-a-kind weapon in the derelict ass-end of an irradiated vault, or stuck on a busted trailer in the ass end of nowhere, or in the hands of murderous thugs, and so on.
