Pretty much. Even with a wife and family, money can buy a lot of opportunities. Women can smell money. You can easily emulate that by just dressing nicely. Wearing khakis and a button down shirt goes a long way. Got a suit you wore to a funeral one time? Even better. Wear it to the bar and go for the "just got off work" look. 1) Dedicate a few months (at least 8 hours a day) taking online courses at https://www.coursera.org/ and learning as much as you can.
2) Build a github profile with some interesting projects you do on the side. This step is crucial as your github profile serves as the crux of your resume. You can get a good job with a solid github profile even if you don't have a degree.

If I had to tell a newcomer what year to stop at, I would probably say 2007. There is good stuff before that, but someone just starting out isn't going to be interested in the massive drop in graphics that were standard from 2006 and earlier. Once they learn more, they can dig them out on their own.
