Don't worry about stat modifiers, there is nothing in Fates worth fretting about maxed stats. Just worry about growths, particularly Str/Mag growths.
The mother you pick for the kid has a big influence on it this time around, so don't have a Mag kid mothered by a mom with no magic or a physical kid mothered by a magic mom.

The way I see it, Siegbert badly wants to do "rebellious" things and protect everyone upfront but because of his worrisome personality and insecurity, he suppresses these desires and try to keep everyone from being in fights. This is evident in his part of the Heirs of Fates DLC. His part is actually my favourite out of all of them to be honest. I'd say Velouria is the only must-have kid since she's always much better than Keaton, assuming you're not giving her a magic mom or something. Ophelia is also good if all of your spellcaster sucks, Midoriko is okay if you just want to make some extra money, Percy's paralogue can be a gold mine. Other than that, I guess the other kids' paralogue are pretty much just exp grinding and to get some seals/stat-boosting items since none of them particularly stands out as an excellent combat unit.

Anyone else have trouble giving Selena experience? Like, most of my characters have some sort of valuable tactical niche in such a way they grab experience themselves (Effie melee units, Beruka further away melee units, Corrin single dudes who need to be magically oneshot, Niles ranged threats including mages, Mozu ranged threats not including mages and dudes needing ORKOed, Felicia maging and healing, Elise healing, Azura dancing), but with Selena she doesn't really have the ability to tank or attack from afar at the moment so she basically is stuck with only the cleanup experience that has to be shared with the rest of my units.
I feel I run into this same situation with non-tank melee units basically constantly throughout the series, honestly.

Selena is an overrated unit honesty. Merc is an awful base class in Fates and Selena doesn't excell in any field. Her shit strength means that reclassing her forces you to deal with E ranks. Only use her if you are desperate for a Falcoknight for Rescue shenanigans and are too fast for Shigure. Not much of a point in using her as a combat unit on Lunatic.

Her personal skill implies she should be used as a secondary in attack stance, but there's two problems with that. The first is that most crits are going to kill shit, especially with killer weapons. The second is that the only units likely to score a crit without killing anything are terrible for the front lines, except maybe Benny if he gets str screwed. It's ridiculous in the Arena though, since one crit activation means she's attempting crits the entire match, even if she's using a Bronze Weapon, which normally can't crit.

If your lead has ridiculous attack power, the enemies they face are going to have ridiculous defense. This goes both ways though, since if your partner isn't doing squat for damage the partner your enemy gets is also going to be pretty shitty. I dropped Pieri while she was still a Cavalier after she married Xander in my first run, so the enemies' pair up partners wound up doing 0 damage unless they were mages, who wound up doing single digits for shitty accuracy.
