The only pre-metastasis areas I liked were Sky Tower, Storm Pass, Verderia, and North Myre the rest sucked massive dick. Grand Flores was boring as fuck, Old Behemoth was literally an alt graveyard for 90% of the population, Aphelia Post had some really shitty dungeons like Catacombs, and I really couldn't care for the Arad GBL dungeons or Odessa Streets.
While I really don't care for most of the post-metastasis dungeons I can say they at least don't feel like chores to go through minus the later half of New Behemoth and Iced Wall as a whole. I wish they'd do something about Iced Wall because it's probably one of the worst areas in the whole game at the moment. It no longer serves its original purpose of being a "throwback area" now that Mirror Arad exists which makes wonder why Neople doesn't change it into an entirely new area. I doubt they'll really change it seeing as nobody really gives a shit about leveling alts anymore.

Verderia was at least a comfy area to grind in, endless Final Pursuit got old after a few runs and the newer Kartel Oceanic Express Dungeons are still pretty shit despite all the changes they've done to them.

Depends more on your class than anything. Some classes have a lot of viable weapons and armor and can also mix and match, whereas others can't even use more than one set if at all and have to hope for one of two weapons.

According to the gooks these are the top 5 usable DT epic sets.
1. Dark Gothic
2. Full Plate (Black Mirror can proc all the "Damage from Enemy Attacks" effects allowing you to easily take advantage of the surprisingly high stat boost of this whole set)
3. Mana Vortex
4. Wesley's Tactical
5. Assassin's Attitude
There are some individual pieces not a part of these sets that are usable like Infinity Requiem, Darkness Low Sash, and some pieces of the Burning Mana set.

The last time I remember them giving out compensation for a bug was when that one event was giving out multiple Simona's Letters of Recommendation that expired at Reset everyday. The compensation for that bug was a 5 day Master's Contract which had nothing to do with that event at all.

Pick whatever looks coolest and go from there. You'll likely get to your first advancement before you burn your first FP bar and from there just go with whatever looks appealing to you. Your first job change is free so if you don't like your choice you can swap to another any time you want before 50. Skill resets are also free so feel free to experiment to find what suits you best.
