Thread for the discussion of visual novels originally created in English, other than those belonging to /ksg/.
Do you have a question about a Japanese visual novel or a translation of it?
/vn/ is ready to answer it. We are not them.

Is Sword of Asumi the best thing AJ Tilley produced?
>>143451243
No, Beach Bounce Remastered is, but only until Summer Fling gets released. I also really loved Divine Slice of Life and My Highschool Cross Dressing Romance. Echo Tokyo Intro is sure to be great too after all of AJ's promised updates.

>>143455330
Adult Content
As Seeds of Chaos is an eroge, it will include a large amount of sexual content. Since sexuality is both a complex and disparate area, the decision was made to make the game one of general appeal in an attempt to encompass many kinks and parings. All of the following are planned for inclusion, with an option to filter out any scenes and/or events the player is not interested in seeing.
Pairings – Male / Female, Male / Male, Female / Female, Male / Futa, Female / Futa
Central kinks – Corruption, demon sex, & monster / monstergirl sex
Other kinks – BDSM, slave training, moral degeneration, furries, fembois / traps, nuns, exhibitionism, pregnancy / breeding, lactation, mindbreak, humiliation, prostitution, public use, addiction, transformation, bimboization, piercings / tattoos, squirting, bukkake, netorare / netori, & incest

They want so sound professional, so why not use a professional musician?
> inspired by the worldbuilding of Berserk, Dark Souls, The Witcher and other epic fantasy series’, as well as the adult games Corruption of Champions, Legend of Queen Opala, and Slavemaker.
>Visual novel style scenes with complex, multi-branched dialogue trees inspired by Black Isle / Obsidian, Bioware, and the Witcher games that affect later meetings and events.
>Industry professional grade sound effects, mostly from BOOM Library.

>>143458795
>What are those effects, moans and shit? Why mention something so minor?
They fell for the "pro SFX library" meme. BOOM is not industry standard, they just market themselves as such. Wouldn't surprise me if they torrented that.
The poor mic placement renders most of the SFX from there nearly useless even for layering. What good is having high quality recordings when it's a HQ recording of a really bad take?
What would you consider good, or at least decent evn music or musicians?

I'm trying to figure out which elective classes to include in a high-school sim. Any suggestions?
The player will have the option to select four from a pool at the start of the game.
I've created some polls from the course catalog of my alma mater. I doubt I'm going to write stories for more than ten electives.

>>143473735
Back when I was in high school, most of those classes were considered blow-off classes. They weren't college-level in the slightest. They were more like half-done, barely-introductory-level classes that the school district set up for the sake of looking good to outsiders.
>>143475482
$100/minute last I checked
>>143476554
I'd read a satire on the mandatory education system and how worthless and wasteful it is. You'd have to mock high schooler culture as well though, making the dating sim aspect very disingenuous. It could be a masterpiece.
>>143477792
I plan on making the dating-sim part of the game somewhat genuine, but the classes will mostly be jokes. I happened to also take aquatic science as an elective. The class would go to a nearby pond, fish whatever was living in it out, bring its catches back, and either overfeed, or forget to feed them. At least a few fish and one turtle died each semester. I always thought it was hilarious.
>>143478761
Does this project have a name?I want to help write this.
>>143476554
The idea of a high school offering such weird courses is completely outside my experience, but I went to a small school, so there simply wasn't room for much in the way of electives. We barely managed to get them to let us have a drama class one year.
>>143479084

the whole game. Practically everything she shares about the game has some "lesson" about sexuality.
>>143495381
Solution: Stop making your game, burn all the files, and martyr yourself somewhere dramatic, like at a pro-Obama fundraiser or something.
Destroying all the files first is important because the last thing you want is for them to look into your personal life, find your unfinished work, and conclude that you did it because you were a tragic, tortured soul who was too afraid to express your true progressive leanings.
>>143495551
to the best of my knowledge it was literally one optional dialog branch (if you kissed a boy) that everyone was getting their panties in a bunch over.
most of what she shares about the game is 'LOL LOOK HOW HOT THIS IS I AM SO AWESOME' which is annoying in a totally diffferent way
>>143494712

>>143495701
there's also the no homo bit with the athlete.
>>143494712
If you as the player choose to kiss a boy the character goes into a rant about how kissing a boy doesn't make you stop being a lesbian, and expecting people to live up to a 'gold star' standard is stupid. as far as I know. which may not be wrong but is a random derail.
>>143495985
That's actually pretty reasonable, minus the bad writing of a political rant breaking up the action.
>>143495983
I have no idea what that's about, I may not be paying enough attention. I kind of tune most of those posts out
>>143496102
idk, to me it sounded like she thinks bisexuals are imaginary creatures.
>>143496410
It's a complicated mess because there's the whole lesbian-as-identity issue (and some of those girls are crazy), and then there's the lesbian-as-purity issue which is messed up in another way.
For the most part trying to tell someone else what they should label themselves is a lost cause, even if you think 'straightish' isn't precise enough.
>>143495878
Still in development.
Demo will be out in a few months, I guess.
>>143496859
Just put asians in when diversity is required. Most people on pol love their waifus.
>>143495381

>>143497854
maybe it's a "last humans on earth have to enroll in a breeding program with different races" deal or something

>>143498664
Now this is degeneracy!
>>143498664

>>143495381
I can't even fathom what brings a person to label their own beliefs with anti-thought buzzwords. If you're afraid of people misinterpreting your work to champion causes you don't believe in or actively dislike, stop writing immediately, because that happens to any story worth a damn, which I hope you aspire to create. The most you can do is present the issues as causing the problems you believe they do. As long as you have a modicum of nuance to your worldview, you should be able to portray these topics without it reading like an alt-right manifesto, and the far left will still tear you apart.
>>143500843
Any argument contains its own opposite.
Even if you argue vociferously in favor of something, someone will accuse you of being clearly against that thing and trying to make its advocates look bad.
>>143501583
You can't live in fear of that. Like I said, if it's paralyzing to think of someone taking your story the wrong way, stop writing.
Or you could use a pen name, so your writing is partially anonymous.
You can't make the reader think something they don't already subconsciously believe, and there's a lot of people out there that disagree with you. Don't let them stomp on your work before it's even finished, because then nobody will hear what you have to say.
>>143499226
Maybe that's the trick. Making something so over the top that criticizing it makes you appear as a dummy who "didn't get it".

>>143536383
You can not deny it, senpai. It is the nature of multi-heroines to have scientifically-proven worst girls:
Katawa Shoujo = Hanako

>feature one set couple
This is 90% of yuri games. Especially given that
>kinetic novels
it's hard to have romance options in a KN.
Highway Blossoms at least has some prominent side characters. From past experience with Dahlia I wouldn't be surprised if nobody but the main characters has a sprite in the Cosmilica game.

How would a route not be optional? Or do you mean 'optional' as in 'the character must also be romanceable'?
Seems like the content would be more wasted then because only tumblrites who identify as asexual would pick the friendship route intentionally
>>143611339
I can imagine people picking an optional friendship route if it's a game with both straight and gay routes.
>>143611831
In my experience the kind of players who absolutely don't want to do a gay route will also refuse to do the friendship version and whine that there should have been more straight romances added instead.
I'm sure there are a few people who would do the friendship version, it's just the loud people I encounter are generally either fine with a gay romance or don't want it to exist at all.
>>143608967
Personally, in cases where Hot Sensei turns out to, say, already have a wife in the hospital, I would rather have the story of my character swallowing her disappointed crush and building a friendship with him than a story in which the wife conveniently dies so we can hook up.
Unless I'm a villain protagonist killing the wife myself.
Of course, some people would rather have no characters with serious romance obstacles added to the plot at all.

Not British, but I have to remind you that while almost every nation that still has a monarch is hellbent on the separation of Church and State, the same cannot be said of the biggest countries that are full-on democracies (as opposed to parliamentary monarchies). Dudebros make great friends, but are often boring to date. Twintail tsunderes make great bitchy bffs, but I don't want that in my ear forever. I just see optional friendship routes as interesting bonuses. An alternative to adding stock characters just to fill out the ranks in the name of MOAR CONTENT.

>>143661894

>>143661894
No. You can sell them as a natural person and declare individual taxes.
However, for profit share between countries with tax agreements a company would make sense since that way you don't end up paying taxes in every country. (particularly relevant for steam, since USA's corporate tax is around 35% iirc)
>>143662354
>However, for profit share between countries with tax agreements a company would make sense since that way you don't end up paying taxes in every country. (particularly relevant for steam, since USA's corporate tax is around 35% iirc)
I don't think company structure makes much difference in that particular case but maybe I'm not picturing what you're picturing.
Being a company CAN be useful for tax purposes. It helps shield you from financial liability, so that the company can be sued to oblivion but leave your personal assets intact. Forming a company and paying yourself dividends may also give an advantage over normal income tax.
>>143663475
I'm seeing it from the "companies make it easier to avoid double taxation" angle.
The brief discussion about CoG and pity routes made me think of something. In those games, the love interests are often genderswapped according to the player's sexuality and gender, with a few changed lines and scenes here and there. Maybe implementing something like that could make a VN better at omnipandering instead of the usual pity same-sex route. It's quite a bit more work for the artist though.
>>143664968
It works for Choice of Games because the scenes are brief and so much of it is left to the player's imagination already.
The more detail and interaction you have with a character, the more it's going to be a mess if it's just a swappable generic, even if you have the art.
>>143664968
>love interests are often genderswapped according to the player's sexuality and gender, with a few changed lines and scenes here and there
How do you do write something like that? Genderless blobs with copypaste bland personality enough to accomodate every sexual preference possible and interchangeable sprites?
Not trying to make fun or anything, I honestly don't understand that approach.
>>143665854
>How do you do write something like that? Genderless blobs with copypaste bland personality enough to accomodate every sexual preference possible and interchangeable sprites?
Write interesting characters whose personality doesn't depend on their gender?
>>143666153
You write interesting characters but taking into account every aspect of them. Sexuality don't need to be the most important, identity-defining of them, but it isn't just something you can brush aside and go: "oh, s/he likes boats and lasagna, how interesting!". Apart from the obvious differences in sex scenes and flirty, cuddly bits, it affects manner of speech, backstory, general outlook in life. A girly girl wanting traditionally girly things is as valid as a tomboy defiying such views, and taking into account their different circumstances and the way they affect others arround them. Glossing over such things isn't my idea of a well written char.
>>143666153
Again, it works in Choice of Games because the scenes and interactions are so brief. If you know a character only as an archetype, 'my work rival', 'my childhood crush', 'a gorgeous and mysterious stranger', it doesn't take much to let the reader's mind fill in the gaps and picture the appropriate character for their tastes.
The more you talk to that character outside of their archetype, though, the more it starts to become tricky. Personal backstories, personal triumphs and tragedies, are likely to hint at gender or to at least be interpreted differently depending on gender. And, of course, the more details you add, the less you are able to pander to absolutely everyone.
Maybe I swoon at the idea of a mysterious female stranger who delivers cryptic warnings before disappearing into the night... but only if she's androgynous and wearing a trench coat, not if she's got huge tits and an evening gown, and definitely not if she smokes.
>>143667270
>it affects manner of speech, backstory, general outlook in life.
As far as I'm concerned, any gender can have any outlook/personality/whatever. I don't care if it's a stoic, practical and masculine woman or a stubborn, weak, and feminine man. The only thing sex changes for me is how you bump the uglies. The more important thing here is the setting.
>>143667270
>>143667491
While this sounds pretty sensible in theory, maybe 20% of all EVN have anything that could be called interesting characters with a background.
Take something like catch canvas, you have the loud and lazy girl, the quiet and perverted one, and then there's the lol random choice.
>>143667725
Any gender absolutely can have any outlook on life, but players are going to interpret the character very differently if it's a girl who loves cuddly toys and cries easily or a guy who loves cuddly toys and cries easily. Simply allowing that character to be either may be a valid and interesting design decision, but it's not true to say that it panders to all tastes.
It's also hard to imagine that all the surrounding characters would treat that character the same way regardless of gender, which can start bringing up player complaints where they insist that a plotline was clearly written only for one perspective and the other is a badly-implemented afterthought.
>>143667981
Time to step it up then, senpai.
Let's redefine the genre together!
>>143667725
>I don't care if it's a stoic, practical and masculine woman or a stubborn, weak, and feminine man.
Those two types would feel like different characters if you genderflipped them to me, honestly.
If you keep that different gender stereotype they'd change personality too much and if you kept them the same the impression would be too different.
>>143667981
>maybe 20% of all EVN have anything that could be called interesting characters with a background
Please don't pull percentages out of your ass, it makes my pedantry want to sit you down and make you actually go over a list of the 100 most recently-released EVNs and discuss them in depth to see if your figures hold up.
Catch Canvas, as far as we can tell, is shallow fanservice shit. I doubt it has much in the way of interesting character background. (I also doubt that anywhere near 80% of EVNs are shallow fanservice tit bait)
But okay, let's look at Catch Canvas. Would those characters make sense if you swapped their genders and nothing else about them? All the same poses? (I didn't play their demo, I don't even know.)
>>143667491
>Personal backstories, personal triumphs and tragedies, are likely to hint at gender or to at least be interpreted differently depending on gender
Gender makes you more likely to think a certain way or do certain things, but it's not set in stone. As I said, a man can have a feminine outlook and a woman can have a masculine one. If your character boils down to I'M A (WO)MAN AND _____ BECAUSE I'M A (WO)MAN, BY THE WAY I AM A (WO)MAN, unless it's a specific biological function that's bad writing. But this is probably my own taste speaking, really, I like it all, even guys who love cuddly toys and cry easily.
>>143668153
>It's also hard to imagine that all the surrounding characters would treat that character the same way regardless of gender

Free porn is everywhere. Most of it is incredibly unsatisfying if you want to be ravished by a sexy demon.

Just saying, if you don't get a large sample pool, it's because this form comes across as very intrusive.

yeah, this was my problem. I can't remember if I eventually decided to fill it out anyway or not, and I don't really care, but I'm extremely obvious demographically which makes the other questions completely non-anonymous

For those who have had a game published through Sekai/MangaGamer/whatever, is it traditional to get any kind of advance/licensing fee?

In an ideal world, a publisher should provide:

some market research information and feedback on your game design to help you make it more successful
QA/testing
porting your game to other platforms (including doing the steam integration)
marketing

Sekai Project staff think that the Sakura Series is getting better and better. They also talk a bit about evn publishing in their interview.

>>143762604
What do you expect them to say, "The Sakura games are shit but people keep buying them so we'll keep publishing them"?
>>143762701
That's at least a more honest answer.
They do advise to quit copying Japanese tropes though.
>In fact, I’ll speak more for myself in answering this in that I find EVN’s greatest challenge is just that it relies too heavily on set expectations and tropes. Just because you read a VN that takes place at a Japanese high school, does not mean every VN has to take place in Japan. For me, I want to see and hear stories that comes from your experiences, your life, your influences, and those go back much further than the VN you read in 2013. I think people think that their own culture and experiences aren’t interesting, but they really are, and I would love to see more variations and diversity from EVN developers. Are you Swedish and grew up near the woods? Then a VN with nature, trolls and woods that comes from your own imagination and culture would be much more authentic and personal than writing about Koji Whataeva meeting his childhood friend who has grown breasts over the summer and wants to go to the cherry blossom festival to show off her cleavage in a kimono.
>>143762986
Which is ironic, if they were going to give the Sakura series such a pass, to turn around and deliver a backhand to EVNs like that when they're in a perfect position to know it's not true. They PUBLISH evns that are not set in Japan, why are they repeating this false stereotype?
Unless they were particularly trying to snark at No One But You.

>>143860519
But I'm already home in my basement
>>143821881
I'm making progress, but I've been waiting for the latest sprite to be finished for 2 months now, apparently my artist is busy attending an art workshop/convention abroad. In the meantime it's nice to know someone here is looking forward to AA.
How long would it take for an artist, assuming he is serious, to make around 30 backgrounds?
Asking for a friend.
>>143867992
The answer depends on numerous factors including the artist's work rate, art style, the actual content of the backgrounds, etc.
>>143867992
Depends on artist and how fast they are and how good they are and what kind of quality you're getting. A good artist who wants to make a good end product can actually take a very long time per piece. If the artist doesn't care and is trying to meet a deadline or is just inexperienced, you will get them faster, but the quality won't be as good. Good and fast is very rare, as even professional illustrators that make a living off illustration will take weeks or a month to produce a top notch piece. Professionals who go faster, usually have to paint over, or use photographs to get top detail in quick time. And this isn't even considering if they have a day job or not, which can add more wait time to getting their pieces done.
This is /evn/ though, so I suspect people will give you replies on the shorter range than the longer one. You could technically get a background done per day if you didn't have a job, could dedicate all your time to making backgrounds, painted over photos and didn't care that they were turning into literal scribbles.
>>143867992
Obviously it depends but I would be happy with one a week.
>>143868556
>>143868779
>>143869653
Hm... thanks. My friend will take that into account.
>>143867992
Anything less than 3-4 bgs a day is scam.
>>143867992
Depends on the program I guess.
As a newbie bg artist, I use 3D programs, which allows me to easily make 100+ bgs in one week assuming it's shots of the same room (incredibly useful in CGs). However, with that said, one room takes me about 1-3 weeks to make depending on the complexity i.e. number of mesh.
But do you guys know anyone who would take on 30 bgs? It'd have to be a payment rate that comes out to full-time for me, because I wouldn't have time for any other art for probably 8 months if doing 30 bgs.
>>143875282
About 8 months for 30 sound about right to me. I could only go faster if I didn't have a day job and resigned away all my free time and overworked myself. What the specifics are of the project might make it easier or harder. Like if the setting is simple and requires not so much details in certain areas or rooms, or if some of those 30 are just variations rather than entirely individual backgrounds. If they're all unique and high detail, that's going to take a ridiculous amount of time, no question.
>>143875282
>>143877886
You must be joking.
>>143878058
Depends. How shitty do you want these backgrounds to look?
>>143877886
>I could only go faster if I didn't have a day job
wait if you have a day job would you still expect to be paid a second full-time wage to do the art?
my bg artist took about 2 months to do 11 for me and i think they are full time. i consider them fast.
>>143878414
From Uncle Mugen's SketchUp drafts (e.g. Lucid9) to Makoto Shinkai-tier art (e.g. Everlasting Summer) what kind of quality are we talking about here?
>>143878286
If you need more than a week for making one like this, consider yourself fired. Unless it's a commission, not full-time payment.
>>143878351
If they work another 8 hours a day to make them, I don't see why not.
>>143878351
If I draw for others and it's not a passion project, I bill by the hour. So it would depend how much of my free time was going into drawing for them. I just don't expect an EVN group to pay me better than my day job, so I would not be quitting my day job for it. Hypothetically, if an EVN group paid me well enough to quit said day job, I could probably do 30 backgrounds in about 2-3 months of work.
But I'm also a sucker who does free work for people if I believe in them enough. It's never worth it. People treat you like shit when you don't bill them.
>>143879079
One image per week, 30 images, is roughly 8 months of work. One image per week, is 4 images per month. What's the problem?
>>143879081
Well sure but I'm finding it hard to believe someone can manage to keep up two full-time jobs at once.
>>143879079
The thing is artists need to confirm sketches and stuff before finishing any work. So even if they can finish something in 1 or 2 days, they need to wait for confirmation and that waiting time can pile up into days.
Even worse is when you have lots of corrections and the client takes forever to reply.
Don't die.
>>143878058
That factors out to just under 1 BG a week. Depending on the complexity of the BG, it can take a week or more just to do one.
>>143883386
And how much do you expect to be paid for that?
>>143883518
$70+ per piece, depending on the complexity.
>>143879727
You realize even non-artists work that much sometimes, right? It's stressful as all hell, but it's not impossible. Especially if it's in intervals and not going to be along time commitment.
>>143884145
eight months isn't a long time committment?
I know people try to work that much. Then they go nuts and end up in the hospital.
>>143884359
>Then they end up in the hospital.
That was me. And I'll probably do it again. Some people like me are just idiots, anon. Don't think about it too hard.
>>143884359
Look through some fluff news pieces sometime. You'll find dozens of college students working two jobs to put themselves through college earning awards and shit, not hospital visits.
>>143884979
I'd guess the people who get a hospital visit instead of awards just don't get any articles written about them.
>>143885104
The point was it's nowhere near as impossible as they seem to think.
>>143886256
Of course it's not impossible, but a lot of things aren't impossible and are still unlikely (or in this case unlikely to work out well)
The college students I know who tried to work fulltime jobs while being fulltime students ended up flunking out because they were too tired to focus on their schoolwork. As for regular people working multiple jobs, in the game industry we have crunch time and all its associated horror stories, and in normal news you get all those tales of people passing out at the wheels of their cars and killing someone due to trying to work two fulltime jobs.
Basically if an artist told me they had a day job AND wanted to work eight hours a day on my art for eight months, I wouldn't hire them, it sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
How important is optimizing code? As in, other than the overall file size of the game, will anyone actually care if I use layers for sprites vs showing a whole new sprite for each expression/pose change?
>>143886612
These hypothetical questions are fun, so I must go on. All this talk made me curious where other anons draw the line.
I know this conversation started because someone said "full time", but realistically, you're never going to pay someone a flat daily rate, but by the hours they work for you, or on their individual pieces. So, would you be okay with them going slower due to their personal time constraints/other job, in order for them to not work themselves to death, or would you hire an entirely different artist just to save time?
Would the quality of their work change your opinion any? If, hypothetically, they were the most incredible artist you ever saw and affordability wasn't an issue, but they just couldn't quit their day job and were slower than others because of it, and weren't going to work themselves to death, would the quality of their work change your answer any?
I'm just curious, if you like someones work, how slow is too slow before you opt out for a faster artist? Other anons can answer this too, I'm curious at which point it is that people give artists the boot in these kinds of projects.

>>143888835
>if you like someones work, how slow is too slow before you opt out for a faster artist?
Mmm. If I like someone's work enough, their slowness gets a lot of leeway as long as they keep me informed and get things done in roughly the time they say they will. If they're slow but reliable, I can plan ahead and work on other things while waiting for them to finish.
I'm only going to panic and seek another artist if they're inconsistently slow. If they keep falling further behind, promising to make it up later, or going in and out of contact and so on.
>>143887565
Two posters on EVN who decompile your code will give you shit for doing it wrong. Your users will not care as long as it works.
>>143888835
I don't mind slow as long as the artist is reliable, aka will eventually finish. I'd probably be ok waiting up to 2 years for 30 bgs. But I wouldn't ask for 30 in the first place, unless they were very simple, paint-overs, or mostly variations of each other. A hobbyist artist is likely to burn out or disappear, and a professional artist would need to be compensated enough to make up for all their time going to one client (keeping in mind that a 3rd world artist will have a different concept of what is enough pay to make it worthwhile).
I'm the one who mentioned full-time, but I didn't mean salary. I meant hourly or per piece.

I'd normally take it in a heartbeat, but I know for a fact (based on his messages and comments) that he's most likely one of those guys who won't be able to pull through and just end up with an unfinished project. Should I milk him for all it's worth (he's asking for 4 interior scenes. I can't do exterior scenes yet, i.e. w/ clouds and trees, so he's looking for another BG artist for that).

>>143914532

>>143915037

>>143915334
Most japanese VNs have the titty monster type, the normal body, the loli, and the semi-flat woman.
Deji's all look the same, just slightly stretched if the character is supposed ot be tall.
>>143915457
Plenty. They look like blond asians.
And that's saying a lot since otome guys usually all look the same with only hair color variations. Deji's just have something that looks more like it would fit in a cartoon rather than anime.
>>143915508
Wouldn't that be more an indication of lack of skill, rather than her style being western?
>>143915864
>Plenty. They look like blond asians.

I'd say it indicates laziness, isn't Deji from South America? Is SA even considered to belong to western civilization?
>>143916276
>implying Asians would ever portray themselves as they really are
The usual style you see in anime is how Asians think they look like, it's why every other race has significant distinctions (ex: westerners having big noses and smaller eyes, blacks having big lips etc.) .
>>143916576
So they don't look like asians is what you're saying.
>>143916276
>>143915508
I don't know, I'm don't even like her work that much but I think deji's characters have a lot more variation than we see in some jp vns
It's just that I've seen some jp vns that had only 'loli type' characters or maybe only 'massive gigantic tits' characters.
I guess it really depends on the vns we are talking about...?
>>143916530
I don't know, are all people who are bad at something lazy?
I think her and her audience like a particular kind of aesthetic (big eyes, :D faces, small noses, bright colors) and don't deviate from that. Whether it's laziness or just taste is hard to say.
>>143916717
Exactly. They don't look like real asians, but rather their portrayal of themselves.
What I'm saying is that Deji's art looks significantly more western than say >>143916727
It might be because of all of the variations in character designs and the slightly more "rounded" look to them.
>>143916727
That's just a gentle hooded eyes character, not an asian squint.
>>143916831
>I don't know, are all people who are bad at something lazy?
Who says Deji's that bad? The guys have very varied body types, while the female characters look like they're were produced in some kind of swf character creator.
>>143916993
The uncanny-valley esque 'western' look, even for an image nigh-identical to a japanese artist's, is caused by the way they draw lines. It's the very selective thickness and darkness that come together to make an anime drawing look "eastern," a talent probably gained from their writing system. Western languages don't emphasize any delicate form.
Unless you're hyper aware of mimicking that technique when drawing, you won't produce anything more than a mildly convincing substitute.
>>143917324
They are clearly meant to be at least somewhat squinty - almost everyone in the cast in drawn in that style.
>>143917389
>The guys have very varied body types,
I really dislike her guys. Anything else that 20-something guys with middle/long hair come out really weird.

I agree with that person about the thick dark lines with no variation in line width.
It's also the Mark Crilley color palette. Mostly the face though. It reminds me of those How to Draw Manga books written by westerners that look like an imitation of manga rather than the real thing.

You can get defensive, but it's pretty much the truth. Don't bother trying to imitate something you naturally can not do. Hire a japanese artist if you absolutely must have that style, or go for a hyper-stylized western look or realism. >completely imitate Japanese VN art
What you mean is to completely imitate generic Japanese VN art. Japs have plenty of variations in their style, plenty of which could easily be construed as "western" if people didn't already know otherwise.
People who get anal about an artist's nationality in determining what's "authentic" are autistic.

>>143921587
They may all be in an anime style, but most of those are just somewhat poorly drawn. I'd say the Daniel Moore and Ryuto characters are of a bit better quality, and therefore share a much stronger resemblance to what people typically expect to see from Japan.

>Do EVNs that aren't dating sims sell?
Loren did sell well but that was ages ago.
>Does anyone care if there's no romance?
I think it's much easier to stomach a mediocre VN with romance than it is without. A romance option honestly feels like almost a requirement at this point.
But that might be because very few VNs that are available in English are about stuff where romance isn't a central plot point. I'd definitely read IHNMAIMS as a VN (I'd actually love to see that with decent production values), or Song of Saya without the sex scenes.
>>143925384
Unfortunately, probably.
>>143925429
>I'd definitely read IHNMAIMS as a VN
It's already an adventure game so we're done here.
>>143924710
Romance is almost a requirement.
>>143925429
99% of EVNs are 'me too' projects trying to make something like their favorite JVN or anime. So we get a lot of romance. It's kind of strange that there's not as much mystery floating around, since some of the huge entry JVNs are mysteries, like WtC, AA, ZE, DR, etc.

If a major theme of the game is getting with them and I hated them, I'd drop it too. Slightly related, but I won't finish Life is Strange because the whole point of the game is to save a person I would rather see deadand she even ends up dead in the proper ending so there's no point in me suffering through it all.
Sometimes I really want to share my art here and ask for constructive criticism (especially since lemma's comments are usually just 'looks good!' and etc which don't help much) but I also want to keep being anon.

I'd tell you to go back toウンターアルターバッハ

Was it 2 minor other AIs? AM as the one from burger land, and then one each from vodka country and the rice nation?

Ugly forehead, unnatural haircolor and thick eyebrows. Checks out on the bad-things-Japan thinks-is-moe scale. You've got a bonafide Japanese character design on your hands!I'm sorry, I just can't stand her design. Art style's fine though. Like someone told you before the coloring looks like something you'd see in a full color h-manga.

Yes. AM absorbs them and they become the Ego/SuperEgo/Id.
Later on, the Russian and Chinese computers ask the player to help them take down AM so that they can become the dominant personality.

My recollection of the game is rather sketchy but I never understood why AM was so incredibly upset. I remember something about being imprisoned inside the earth until th eheat death of the universe but you'd think a computer who has such complete control of reality that he can materialize objects out of thin air would move on at some point. He's also the only murderous AI I can think of that's well known and male. I think Marathon had one as well but those games are quite obscure.
Page 9. Some of you fine ladies of gentlemen please make a new thread. I'd do it, but I have to feed the artists I keep cautive in my basement or they are going to die.

You can't tell me what to do.

I think the common interpretations are that it's either all a simulation and the people have been uploaded without them realizing it, or "moving on" is simply beyond its programming.

You mean killing humans is so ingrained in AM's programming that it keeps the last 5 around because it realizes how much more horrible its own existence would become once they're finally gone. That would make a lot of sense considering who wrote the book.
I really need to play the adventure game again.

But foreheads are cute!

Do it dammit, or I swear to God I'll do a "every Japanese VN is better" edition!
>>143928575
Basically that. It was created to kill humans, if it kills the last 5 then it would have to face the futility of its own existence.
